To want to escape the ghetto

N15 · 29/06/2023 08:37

I have name changed for this for obvious reasons.

I live in a part of London that has long resisted gentrification, and has a stubbornly high (and rising) crime rate. Stabbings, and even shootings, are far too common. Neighbours have witnessed shootings, with their children. The local secondaries are seen as finishing schools for criminals, with a lot of gang involvement, and knives carried around.

I really worry about my children when they reach secondary school age. I would sooner home school than send them to the local secondaries, but I don't have the ability to home school due to working. I work as a junior doctor, but the wages are low, especially for London.

Any suggestions for an area with decent schools that doesn't break the bank? I would need 4+ bedrooms. Even open to buying land and building, anything to escape.

most POC don't use "ghetto" in london and haven't for at least a decade probably more

lol

MissKittyFantastico84 · 29/06/2023 12:44

I used to live in Turnpike Lane, so very Tottenham adjacent. When I had my son, the park I used to walk him in his buggy had frequent assaults. One woman was raped there in broad daylight.

I know you aren't exaggerating.

We moved to Penge - primary schools here are good, and there is a reall family feel. It was a true relief walking around Crystal Palace park and feeling at ease.

Still diverse, still up and coming - and a world away from where we used to be.

Our 5 bed was £825k.

Hope that helps.

radiatorpipe · 29/06/2023 12:44

So we should never improve an area?

Not by forcing people out many who have made it the vibrant area it is.

radiatorpipe · 29/06/2023 12:45

I wouldn't raise my dc in Tottenham

Totally agree mumtothreegirlies, wheniwasafieldmyself stirring it up for no reason.

ValancyRedfern · 29/06/2023 12:49

South East London is your friend. You'll get a lovely 4 bed for under £1m and it's a great place to live. I lived in Brockley for many years and loved it.

Zebedee55 · 29/06/2023 12:51

Some of the London/NW Kent areas are ok. Easy commute.

Chaiandkaafee · 29/06/2023 12:53

Highams Park and North Chingford are very nice areas. I would highly recommend the areas!

Outdamnspot23 · 29/06/2023 12:56

I've got a friend who teaches near there and she says they usually lose a boy a year to violence, usually being stabbed. It's just awful and when you hear about them on the news (if they're on the news) you often don't realise how many are concentrated in certain areas if you don't know the areas. You'd need a map.

ladykale · 29/06/2023 12:57

Sorry but this is the most ridiculous post ever.

A budget of £800-1m and you're asking the internet how you can escape the ghetto.

For that price you can get a 3-4 bed in most areas of Zone 3 outwards. What is the point of this post?!

Go on Zoopla and put your budget in and you'll see all the options...

Ghetto? Bit strong

Are you offended on behalf of the residents? No need.
May be mingle with one or two or try to live there, that would help bring some change about.

I mean the east Midlands isn't exactly sunshine or rainbows.... i live in a 'small town' in the east Midlands, you know what the neighbouring town has had recently? Murders. The cities especially nottingham have had numerous stabbings in the span of a fortnight, wouldn't exactly say it was full of 'white people who voted for brexit either'

Comedycook · 29/06/2023 08:59

This is hilarious.

A budget of £1million....there are so many places in London where you could buy.

I find it totally bizarre you are even asking the question.

agree - - plenty of 4 bedroom places available for that price south of the river for sure.
You can have mine for a million OP.
Transport across the river to work can be very easy.

Ghetto? Bit strong

😂 a bit strong!? I was horrified when I read the OP. I would of said a bit strong for a rough council estate; not stabbings, shootings and criminals fishing for kids in the secondaries 😳

That's not how it works for junior doctors. They are tied to a specific region for the duration of their training and whilst it is theoretically possible to transfer (and this is my advice to OP) it is not straightforward at all.

Agreed. Someone who'd never touch the area or its inhabitants with a barge pole coming on here to drop the R word. 🤔
Minimising and virtue signalling.

euthanatothrow · 29/06/2023 13:11

Move out of London, with that kind of budget you can live like a king. Assuming you can transfer?

NW near Preston is good, you've got access to Manchester/Liverpool/Preston/Lancaster, and Leeds with a bit of travel.

And some of the house prices will horrify you:

Go on them, post some links to places in decent area for the budget. Most aren't places you would want to live.

Jesus Christ.

A million pound budget, a job with an earning potential of 100's of thousands and you're not happy.....Fuck me , try being a nurse like my friend who can't afford to rent, never mind buy...this country is broken.

Nowhere in London is as bad as you describe, it's just living in say Forest Gate or Tottenham or an estate in Acton, isn't half as nice as leafy Richmond or St Johns Wood where many people think they 'belong' , but there are plenty of white collar workers living in nice houses in every part of London, and all those stabbings and crime are mostly people they have nothing to do with.

Leave London, get a job in the West or up North, the lifestyle you wish for is no longer available to you down here.

Badcaseofthelate30s · 29/06/2023 13:12

You only have to go to zone 5 or 6 and there's loads of places. It's really not that far for the sake of getting your kids out of Tottenham.

I think I know the park you are referring to. The stories I heard from mums who live in Turnpike Lane are hair raising. Possibly even worse than Tottenham. The drug dealing is certainly more blatant there. Here they at least try to be a bit subtle!

I have thought about transfer. The process is made so unnecessarily difficult though. Another option would be to sack specialist training and apply to GP training out of London. I do love my speciality though.
