Exclamation marks overuse

There was a recent Facebook post about a man that had gone missing locally and a subsequent update a few weeks later to say he had sadly passed away followed by RIP and loads of exclamation marks. It makes me cringe when people overuse and inappropriately use exclamation marks. Anyone agree ?

They are indeed, but not everyone is good with words and it's a lot easier to type "!!!" than "I feel extremely strongly about this matter".

Excessive use of !!!! reminds me of teenagers. It may be easy to type/write but it's annoying to read.

LOL at 'explanation marks' Grin

LaPerduta · 29/06/2023 15:32

Yes, but it also makes me cringe when people leave an unnecessary space before question marks and other punctuation.

MavisMcMinty · 29/06/2023 15:37

Yes, I actually despise people who use them at the end of every sentence as their only punctuation, and as others have said when they leave a fucking GAP before them. They also use lots and lots of emojis, which I loathe.

Last summer in the heatwave someone on Twitter remarked on someone else’s multiple furious exclamation marks - “Careful with those things, they’re like kindling in this heat”.

SORRY!!! ! I cannot get upset at things!!! Like this!! 🙄

Droppit · 29/06/2023 15:51

I even find RIP in just initials a bit rude (no logic I know).
"Awww RIP" is even worse and sounds sarcastic to me.
That's even before the exclamation marks get involved.

RosieandJimbo · 29/06/2023 15:52

I think it's quite rude to use more than one.

AlexTfan · 29/06/2023 15:54

i think it’s absolutely unacceptable and ignorant to use an exclamation mark tp
punctuate a sentence about death or a funeral. Do people have no sense or sensitivity?

AlexTfan · 29/06/2023 15:55

*to punctuate

Ribena20 · 29/06/2023 15:58

Oh my goodness! Yes! I agree! I find it annoying when people use them instead of full stops! It changes how it reads in my head! I don't know why people do it! People do it in Mumsnet posts all the time! I can't usually read the full post! It's making me cringe just writing this!

Definitely rude. To show one's regret at a death, only the full "requiescat in pace" suffices.

losingmymarblesagain · 29/06/2023 16:56

It's not as bad as spaces before question marks!
