Billy Nomates

I have some sympathy with Billy Nomates after getting criticised for her Glasto set. Abuse is abuse and it isn't acceptible.
Full disclosure - I love her music, but didn't like her performance and having watched it, I'd still buy her albums but I wouldn't pay to see her live.

I have only seen incandescent reports of the online abuse she faced, I've not seen the criticism itself, so I don't feel entitled to have an opinion on where others' opinion turned into criticism turned into abuse. However, I do think Billy Nomates is doing her generation a disservice by so publically stepping out of the limelight. I'm pretty sure Polly Styrene, PJ Harvey or Missy Elliot would have just stuck a finger up and said you.
Art is art and will always be criticised - Jackson Pollock didn't stop painting when half the world said he was a charlatan. If you're going to step into an arena that is underpinned by a spectrum of opinion, surely you have to expect not everyone to like what you do.

Isn't Billy Nomates letting the bullies win?

She can do whatever the fuck she likes

sashagabadon · 29/06/2023 06:16

I watched her set and her dancing was a little extravagant at times but no more so than plenty of other artists. I loved her shirt and trouser combo. What was the criticism about?

ISeeMisledPeople · 29/06/2023 06:39

Absolutely her choice. She doesn't owe it to anyone to go out there and perform.

I left a job and refused to put in a grievance against the person that bullied me out (despite management actively encouraging me to) - I was, by that point, not mentally strong enough to deal with it. I guess I let the bully win too - but I had to do what was right for me at that time.

If Billy Nomates wants to take time out from the public eye - whether it's temporary or permanent - I trust that she is doing what is right for her in that moment. And I don't think it's for anyone else to tell her how she should feel and what she should do.

Loved her music after discovering her on Jools Holland. Heard rather than saw some of her set at Glastonbury and was looking forward to watching it back on the iplayer so was then shocked to see her statement- didn’t see any of the abuse. I think it’s a real shame but she needs to do what’s right for her. I just wish she realised that she has a lot of supporters too. Am going to Victorious so am keeping my fingers crossed she will still play and will have reconsidered about withdrawing totally by that time.

Sad to read this as Billy Nomates is very talented.

I'd ask the question, what are the social media companies doing to cancel the accounts of those abusing her (and others)?

ExtraOnions · 29/06/2023 07:19

I watched the set, and wasn’t too keen (not that I posted it on social media)

If you are in Showbiz, not everyone is going to like what you do, and they are allowed to say they don’t like it … resorting to insults isn’t on, but, legitimate comment is fine. I know a lot of people who are in the public eye, and you need a thick skin.

Bet a number of the “outraged” on Twitter, wouldn’t bat an eyelid at making highly personal comments about politicians.

Her choice. Lots of celebs are either quitting SM or having someone else run it as an info service rather than engaging with fans.

she got horrendous nasty abuse. Not fair criticism of her music or performance. Just really nasty misogynistic abuse that really had little to do with her art or music.

no-one should have to put up with that. If my boss told me he thought the talk I gave at the conference missed the point and lacked impact I could take that on the chin. If he told me I was a fucking, cunt who dressed like a bag lady, was a talentless dykey bitch who shouldn’t have been asked to speak in the first place… well that’s different isn’t it?

these brave, brave men giving their ‘opinion’ on SM…

littleripper · 29/06/2023 07:40

I saw this but did not see the 'abuse', I thought it was a way of getting on all the music/glasto stories in the press tbh. Hardly anyone saw the 'abuse' and everyone has seen this story and then looked at her performance so I thought it was a PR stunt.

DiolchamFawr · 29/06/2023 08:02

wasn’t a lot of the criticism received because she used backing tracks? complaints being Glastonbury is about live music.
Personal abuse though is a different thing altogether, she’s very talented

cheapskatemum · 29/06/2023 08:45

The abuse I saw was from 6Music listeners, saying she was a Mum singing karaoke. Misogyny at its best. I've left 6Music listener groups for the same reason.
