Not wanting to go on holiday just before going

Does anyone else get this?

Just before I'm due to travel I suddenly don't want to go anymore. I cba with the travelling, and being away from my home, bed, cat, all my things and my home comforts.

I'll like it when I get there, but in the days leading up to it I have a feeling of dread even if it's going to be fun.

Oh blimey yes.
I give myself a kind but firm talking - to!

Also helps to have micromanaged the holiday and built lots of slack into the schedule.
E.g. popping the dog in kennels the night before and then staying in an on-airport hotel, booking a lounge, etc.

But I definitely remember getting cold feet multiple times so no, it is NOT just you.

Mstxxx · 28/06/2023 15:41

I'm the same. I always feel moody the days leading up to it!

I put it down to the stress of preparing for it (especially if you're the one organising it). For me I have to ask everyone where they want to go and work out the best deal and best hotel, research into each place, then book it for everyone, then plan an itinerary for everyone, sort out additional things for everyone like visas and travel insurance, sort out my own holiday shopping, work out what people owe me and book any excursions or things we want to do and speak with the places, prepare everyone's boarding cards, sort out everyone's travel to the airport.

That's all before we even get on the holiday.

Once all that is done it's a few days before and I've probably not had time to sort my own things out. Then it's the holiday prep for yourself with all appointments for different things.

Once I'm on the holiday I know everyone will be looking at me to tell everyone what we're doing, where we're going, what we're eating. If something isn't good or isn't fun I know I'm going to get the blame!

I think all of that really grinds you down before the holiday even happens

Fluffytuffs · 28/06/2023 15:44

Yep. I wept mournfully last year the day before we were due to depart, and announced to DP that I didn’t want to go and we should cancel. We didn’t cancel, I went and had a truly lovely holiday. Go figure.

coxesorangepippin · 28/06/2023 15:47

Oh yeah this is me

I'm currently packing up and I just CBA with it all

TeaandHobnobs · 28/06/2023 15:54

Yep this was me the day before we went away at half term.
It just feels like such a huge effort, and the prospect of adjusting to somewhere that doesn’t have the comforts of home.

DustyMaiden · 28/06/2023 16:00

Yes, and not just holidays. Day trips, clubs, meals, you name it. And if I’ve got several days with arrangements I’m really overwhelmed.

ColdHandsHotHead · 28/06/2023 16:00

Yep, every time. I just think 'why do I put myself through this hassle?'

This is me word for word! Except for the last trip, when DH was so stressed, ratty and miserable that it was kind of enough angst for both of us, and I just sailed serenely through! 😂

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/06/2023 16:17

Yep. Don’t look forward to holidays and only go because DH likes to get away. I’m happy at home and it seems like an enormous effort to go somewhere that’s probably less comfortable than home,

It’s so much effort and I expect the weather will be awful.

quikquiknamechange · 28/06/2023 16:19

Yep me! I get homesick before I've even left.

Tara336 · 28/06/2023 16:22

I get like this too, I just worry about everything, what's going to happen at home while I'm gone, all the arrangements, packing cleaning up etc I hate how it makes me feel. I actually had a panic attack when I was going away with Dd last year and cancelled on the morning of the flight. I have a chronic health condition that flared up as well because I'd got so stressed by it all. Also nearly canceled a dream trip just before lockdown as again waves of anxiety hit me but luckily we went and had a bloody amazing time. I'm so had I'm not alone in feeling like this

survivalmodemum · 28/06/2023 16:22

I’m off on holiday in 2 days and grumpy as fuck. Stressed with appointments/do we have enough clothes/getting the washing pile down/decanting shampoo into little bottles, etc etc!!!

Miss my bed already.

I LOVE my holidays but yes - I feel like that just before going on every single one!

boilingstormyseas · 28/06/2023 16:25

Yes - this was me yesterday and here I am today have a lovely time in the Mediterranean! I hate all the stress of packing up but now I'm here it's fantastic.

toomuchlaundry · 28/06/2023 16:27

I hate packing (some of my stress dreams involve never ending packing!). Always get stressed before we go. DS is going on his after exams holiday with friends, he is so laid back about packing, I on the other hand am fretting

hopeishere · 28/06/2023 16:28

100%. I practically had a panic attack last year and we were only going away in the UK!

I've also realised I prefer an early flight so less hanging around.

Lottapianos · 28/06/2023 16:32

Yes, absolutely feel the same. I have a good time when I'm there, but the transition from normal life to holiday mode can be tough! I used to need a good cry the day before we travelled, or sometimes on day one of the holiday 🤦🏻‍♂️ loads of pent up stress and anger to process before I could actually enjoy myself!

Life is nicer and calmer now but I still find it very stressful just before going away

70sTomboy · 28/06/2023 16:34

We normally go caravanning, due to go in a week. I've been googling med holidays. I want a holiday that isn't bloody hard work. DH is pissing me off. Where are the cheap foreign holidays I see about on here. I'm in a bad mood today. 😒

DidyouNO · 28/06/2023 16:46

We live in the UK and now o ku holiday in the UK. With the children and airports and time differences we found the joy we got from being away was completely masked by the trauma of airports and travel and tiredness. So much happier!!

Babsexxx · 28/06/2023 17:12

This is ME I do all the packing the admin the lotttt and I must say for us mums it can be incredibly shit! What irks me is my husband picks up on my stress he then will turn it into a bit of a competition about who’s found it more stressful when he literally just has to show up LOL. Grrrrrrr
