to prefer cans that you open with a can opener rather than a ring pull?

Just opened a can of tuna and a can of sweetcorn and as usual the lids won't easily come entirely off, making them more tricky to fully empty and rinse out for recycling.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to own a can opener - or am I just a hopeless old Boomer who should get in the sea?

Yes. YABU.

Hope that helps.

DdraigGoch · 26/06/2023 19:51

I don't own a tin opener. Never had a ring pull tin that didn't open easily.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/06/2023 19:52

With you if I had a decent can opener for my arthriticky hands.

CheckEngineLight · 26/06/2023 19:53

I have arthritis in my hands.
Ring pull cans are amazing. I just push them in if they don’t come off, it saves a risk of a razor sharp can lid slicing through someone’s fingers.
I struggle so much with can openers and curse when I have to use one. I’m only in my early 50’s.

Clarachuff · 26/06/2023 19:54

DH and I just had this conversation! With you (gen x!)

PicturesOfDogs · 26/06/2023 19:55

You can still open the ring pull ones with a tin opener though, so just do that?

ThursdayFreedom · 26/06/2023 19:57

I don't mind which, but why not use a can opener even if it has a ring pull, no one's going to put you in the stocks!!

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/06/2023 19:57

My Mum has severely arthritic hands and she finds the ring-pulls really difficult. I'm guessing a wall mounted electric can opener would work for her.

DdraigGoch - very happy for you that you can manage ring-pull cans easily.

You won't get into trouble with anyone if you use a tin opener on tin with a ring pull.

Ah! Bingo for my most hated smug MN response - HTH. I didn't expect to get it so quickly.

I don't get on very easily with ring pulls when my hands and wrists are weak. I tend to pull the pull off. I have a good can opener though. I prefer it.
I'm guessing anyone that doesn't own a can opener doesn't get economy tomatoes, kidney beans etc.
Mackerel and Sardines are still a bugger though.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/06/2023 20:02

not if you’re a leftie (unless you own such thing as a left handed tin opener I guess).

Groutyonehereagain · 26/06/2023 20:03

I’m with you @LindorDoubleChoc .

Haha 😂 I’ve had many of those moments myself!

If it’s for your mum, the electric ones are good, my nan had one with a magnet that kept the lid once it was removed.

user1471453601 · 26/06/2023 20:04

@LindorDoubleChoc you ask if you are a " hopeless old boomer". If so I'm more than hopeless. I cannot use a can opener of any description. I just don't have to power to push and turn at the same time. (Suddenly wonders if an electronic one may be the answer). So I much prefer the ring pull ones.

What magic tins are you buying?

Lacucuracha · 26/06/2023 20:07

I prefer ring pull cans too. I use a long spoon like a sundae spoon to scrape out any leftover contents.

My Dad has Rheumatoid Arthitis and ring pull cans are a life saver for him! He struggles so much with can openers, I really wish everything had the option of a ring pull.

phoenixrosehere · 26/06/2023 20:11

Hyper-mobility in my hands so ring pull all the way. Plus, I can always slip the end of a dessert spoon or butter knife to help me.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/06/2023 20:13

Knife or spoon through the ring for extra leverage if it's a bit sticky. My heart always soars when I see the tin I need comes with a ring pull. (Curse you, value chopped tomatoes!)

Nugg · 26/06/2023 20:14

Electric can opener for the win. Turn it upside down ring pull or not. Sorted.

WalkingAcrossAFord · 26/06/2023 20:18

Well, YANBU to prefer the normal 'can opener' tins, but I like the ring pull ones better myself.

THIS bit made me LOL though. Grin

......or am I just a hopeless old Boomer who should get in the sea?

Of course not. ^ Flowers😘

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/06/2023 20:20

In the olden days before ring--pull cans you could have a wall mounted electric can opener. I'm not at that stage yet but will for sure investigate opening ring-pull cans with my ye olde fashyionned manual can opener now that Mumsnet has told me this is a thing.

OP posts:
Neverinamonthofsundays · 26/06/2023 20:22

Just turn it over and use the can opener although I am sure you can also use it the correct way up. It even says it on some cans.
