Has anyone ever cut their nose off to spite their face?

A friend at work was telling me that me her and her sister were looking in a bridal shop in another country (not too far away but another language is spoken there alongside English) for ideas for Wedding/Bridesmaids dresses. Friend and sister were talking amongst themselves in English when one of the staff members made a disparaging comment about "the English" to her colleague in the other language. Turns out the sister speaks the other language fluently after living there for 20 years. She told the staff member that if they didn't want custom from 'the English' then it's their loss as they were planning on getting a certain wedding dress (around £1000) and kitting out eight bridesmaids at that shop, but fair enough. The rude staff members were falling over themselves to try and accommodate friend and her sister and we're immediately trying to apologise, but they just walked out and found another (much nicer) local shop.

Anyone else experience the instant karma/cutting nose off to spite face scenario?

Unless the shop assistant owns the shop it wasn't really her that got hurt was it?

If they emailed to say what happened, then she could face repercussions.

Anyway, yes, an estate agent lost out on a very sizeable commission when I was scouting about for a country property with land. She wanted proof of funds and income before arranging a viewing, which I couldn't provide straight away. My partner was out of the country and I'd rushed in having seen the advert by chance. My partner was well able to buy it, but I don't think she believed who he is.

Her business, her name over the door. We ended up viewing after a chat in the local pub, which led us to the owner, and brought it.

Karma is different from cutting your nose off to spite your face. If your friend can't get the wedding dress she wants anywhere else it would be her that is cutting her nose off to buy her face.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/06/2023 15:05

Or spite her face even!

Quitelikeit · 26/06/2023 15:06

My dd does it all the time she’s soooo stubborn!!

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:11

She said the dress was available in a few different places, this just happened to be the first shop they went in :)

Unless you've been victim of this type of thing it's hard to see it any other way but I honestly wouldn't call this cutting off your nose.

I'm a gypsy and have had many similar encounters, being asked to pay for meal before eating at a restaurant where every other customer pays after etc. I've come to learn that it's stupid to argue with people like that (prejudice/racist) and the only thing you have the power to do is leave and go elsewhere in hopes of being treated fairly.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:23

I'm sorry to hear that @Meeting , you don't deserve that discrimination at all

If you are going to start a thread about ‘cutting off your nose to spite your face’ it would be wise to know what the phrase actually means….

MummyDummyNow · 26/06/2023 15:28

That situation really doesn't mean cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Good karma though!

Yes, exactly. The expression specifically implies damaging yourself to spite the other person.

You brought it? Don’t you mean you bought it?

MerryMarigold · 26/06/2023 15:33

Adding to the chorus of "it's not cutting off your nose to spite your face." That's doing something like saying, "You didn't bake a chocolate cake like I asked, so I'm not going to eat it." So everyone enjoys a slice of lemon cake, which you also like, but maybe not quite as much as chocolate cake. They're all yumming and mmmmming. Meanwhile, you sit there without anything. You haven't hurt anyone except yourself!

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:35

Okay, okay I get it. I used the wrong phrase. English is my second language. Happy now?

AlexTfan · 26/06/2023 15:36

Most people know what the expression implies.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:36

Thank you for explaining @MerryMarigold instead of just criticising

Im thinking Siarad Cymraeg here, Im Welsh and now learning as are lots of people all over the world so they could easily come across fluent speakers.
The shop assistant was very rude to you and the owners deserve to know about it. However, if it was a very rare and sought after dress/designer I would still use them and make a point of speaking Welsh at every opportunity possible ro rub it in. If not I would take my custom elsewhere.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:37

You are correct @Berthatydfil , it was Wales

Imagine having eight bridesmaids!

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:39

I know I thought the same when she explained to me. That must be very expensive!

welshpolarbear · 26/06/2023 15:43

I knew by "not too far away" it was going to be welsh 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sorry my countrymen (women) did that. Most of us aren't like that.

You’d be tripping over them!

LittleMissUnreasonable · 26/06/2023 15:47

@welshpolarbear Not at all! My friend still loves Wales and goes every year. I love your country too!

I do it all the time, it's a very negative personality trait though, and one not be admired, but in the long run I'm only hurting myself nobody else.

I've not gone to parties, weddings, deliberately not taken a promotion at work.

But meh, fuck it. 😂
