People complaining about their 'bonus'

Reading a thread about the NHS bonus and everyone unhappy that it's not as much as they expected because of deductions

Made me think that actually people are a bit entitled. we all get taxed on bonus, we should just be grateful we've had some extra.

OP posts:

YABU.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/06/2023 06:11

Are you NHS OP?

GreatestOfAllTime · 26/06/2023 06:13

🙄

malificent7 · 26/06/2023 06:20

Yabvu. I work nhs. It is essentially an insult and a bribe so they can role out a laughable pay rise of 5%-as little as possible and below inflation. Meanwhile hospital accomodation has gone up considerably.

groupery · 26/06/2023 06:23

It shows that a lot of people don't understand the impact of tax.

CiaoBellisima · 26/06/2023 06:24

It’s not a bonus. It’s back pay for the derisory 2%pay rise we had last year.

veryfluffyfluff · 26/06/2023 06:24

I think maybe they hadn't understood it would be taxed?

honeyandfizz · 26/06/2023 06:26

Can anybody link the thread to which the OP is referring?

honeyandfizz · 26/06/2023 06:28

It is shit to be fair and most people understand the tax system perfectly well. I have been awarded around 2400 and will have around 1k in deductions after NI, tax and pension deductions, it really is not a bonus but back pay from last year so YABU.

shakeitoffsis · 26/06/2023 06:31

OP you are being very unreasonable.

groupery · 26/06/2023 06:31

I disagree, you see it a lot on the higher earner threads when people assume the take home is much more.

Spendonsend · 26/06/2023 06:34

I dont think i would be thrilled with a bonus instead of a proper pay rise this year and last. A pay rise effects every year going forward whereas this doesnt.

I do agree that its not so much people dont understand tax its just if you get one off things like this the tax shows more because generally none of it has any personal allowance applied. Its like when you have second or third jobs.

My trust made it non pensionable, so it worked out quite nicely. Obviously I paid tax and NI on it.

honeyandfizz · 26/06/2023 06:36

Just checked mine and out of the 2300 I will be awarded (not paid until this Friday) I will pick up just over 1400. Yes it is better than nothing but bloody hell it stings to see so much deducted 😫

MoonlightMemories · 26/06/2023 07:14

I work a lot of unsocial hours and have a student loan I'm paying back too...all in all my deductions came to just under £1500 for my June pay (vs usual £600 or so)... obviously I knew that would happen but it does sting because we're not actually getting all of the bonus/backpay that was touted as being a supposedly fair and good amount by the government, quite a lot less in reality.

Badbudgeter · 26/06/2023 07:21

I work for the local council and got my back pay “bonus”. By the time you paid tax/ni/pension and then the UC taper rate I got an extra £300 out of £1500. The government giveth and the government taketh.

OhmygodDont · 26/06/2023 07:25

Thing is it’s always horrible being told you’re getting a bonus of say 2k and then realising or remembering that actually you are not at all. I think a bonus under X amount should either be tax free once a year or employers should have to talk about it at actual take home value.

So you’ll be getting a bonus that should equal around the 1.3 take home or whatever.

How can bonuses be tax free?

Employers can't tell you the take home prior because everyone has different income due to jobs & additional income.

SnapPop · 26/06/2023 07:32

YANBU, of course it should be taxed (whether it's pay or a bonus).

fancreek · 26/06/2023 07:32

But why wouldn't you pay tax on back pay?

groupery · 26/06/2023 07:33

and you defo would pay tax on back pay

Proof as someone above said people don't understand how the tax system works 🙄

thekingfisher · 26/06/2023 07:38

Yanbu

Dymaxion · 26/06/2023 07:47

Haven't even looked at my payslip yet, we get paid tomorrow, hoping it will be a bit more than usual, be nice to be able to afford to buy the few bits we need like new trainers and school shoes.
I rarely get excited about NHS pay rises, its usually such a small amount extra, once youve paid tax/NI/pension, on your monthly take home.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 26/06/2023 07:52

What it tells you is NHS staff never get bonuses.
