Colonoscopy Prep…

Moomuffin · 25/06/2023 22:21

Sorry I’m posting here for traffic..

Has anyone had a colonoscopy and not managed the full dose of prep?

Im having a colonoscopy tomorrow morning and have been given 2 lots of moviprep to take 4 hours apart tonight.

I managed about 3/4 of the first dose and about a 1/4 of the second and it’s making me vomit. I just can’t take anymore.. my stools are already pretty much clear but I’m worried about what will happen if I don’t finish it.

Has anyone else been in this position?

I’ve seen a report from a patient who hasn’t managed to do the prep. Can’t remember the exact wording but it basically has said they couldn’t see things properly.
How are you taking it? It’s better to chug it back, ice cold, as quick as possible. A straw can help. if you slurp fast it goes to the back of the throat rather than hitting all the taste buds on your tongue. Pretty much clear doesn’t sound enough tbh, & you’ve only had one prep so far instead of two, or less if you are vomiting. I know it’s awful, but try with a straw, it should help.

The British society of gastroenterology says
Inadequate cleansing prolongs procedural time, reduces caecal intubation and often necessitates repeat endoscopy. It is also a risk factor for missed polyps....

CatchHimDerry · 25/06/2023 22:38

You really must get as much of that shite down as possible, OP

I’m on scope number 3 in 5 months in August, it’s VILE I sympathise!

I didn’t quite finish mine, I left a small amount… was rated “excellent” both times so far

If stools are watery and almost clear etc. you should be fine, but it’s a risk you take I guess. It’s very important that they get a good look etc.

You can do it! Just a tiny bit more…

Moomuffin · 25/06/2023 22:40

Thanks.. when I say clearish, it looks like urine and I can see the bottom of the toilet, which is apparently how it’s meant to be from what I’ve seen on Google.

I tried a straw but it made it worse and I gagged that mouthful over my carpet. That’s the extent of my vomiting so far but I’m worried if I take more I’m going to throw it up everywhere.
I’ve put some squash in it but it’s not really helped much, I’m sipping water in between mouthfuls which is the only thing that’s helping.

Im not generally a wimp when it comes to stuff like this but I think it’s the salty taste that’s causing the problems 😫

@Moomuffin it's best to have it ice cold - squeeze some lemon or lime into it and have it with a straw at the back of the throat. Also have a glass of Sprite or lime cordial and drink that in between it.

megletthesecond · 25/06/2023 22:47

Bless you. I did manage all my prep but fainted and threw up in the morning. Into hospital in a wheelchair, oh the glamour. Procedure went well though.
You just need to have as much as you can. This time tomorrow it'll be long over.

Fruitjellies · 25/06/2023 22:49

My partner had one recently and also vomited it up. At the clinic the next day they said this was completely normal with that medication and said if it hadn't cleared them out enough they'd provide another and rebook. Why they give people medication that may cause them to vomit and be ineffective, who knows!

But it sounds like it has worked fine for you

SparklingLime · 25/06/2023 22:55

I vomited quite a lot back up, and was told I had the cleanest bowel they'd seen that day. ✨

Moomuffin · 25/06/2023 22:58

Thanks everyone. I managed another glass but nearly vomited it back up, I managed to just about keep it down. I can’t take anymore so I’m going to chance it.

fingers crossed for tomorrow 🤞🏻

I threw the first litre up
Kept the 2nd litre down

Prep was graded as excellent..

Prep is worse than the actual procedure

pinkappleorpineapple · 25/06/2023 23:04

@SparklingLime perhaps you could change your name to SparlingBowel 😉

@Moomuffin keep trying to drink a bit more, if using squash make sure it's not blackcurrant as it can cause issues due to the colour of it. Just wouldn't want you to go through all this and need a repeat.
Hope it goes well

DH cut me off six inches of brand new hose pipe to use as a heavy duty, quick flow straw! About four hard sucks downs a glass. Glass of lemonade and baby wipes on the side. If any gets vomitted up, it gets no further than the lips and is swallowed straight back down again with lemonade. Can you tell I have done this many, many times?

dannyufcfan1 · 25/06/2023 23:11

Had one just last week. You'll probably be ok.

I've had two and each time I've only drunk one full dose and about a quarter of the other. It was coming out of me like water by the time I had finished.

And each time I was told my prep was excellent.

Moomuffin · 25/06/2023 23:14

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I didn’t manage to keep it down either, it made me vomit from the start. Luckily mine wasn’t on a Monday, I spoke to someone on the ward and they gave me a different solution to drink, I can’t remember the name but there was much less of it and it didn’t make me vomit at all. Good luck OP.

Hmmmm2018 · 25/06/2023 23:25

Hope it all goes ok. I managed the first one but these second one made me sick. Has followed the various dietary recommendations in day before, and despite vomiting up a lot of the second one it all went ahead ok. They did say if they couldn't do it because I had been sick there were other options if it had to be tried again. Best of luck

Crinkle77 · 25/06/2023 23:40

I had one a couple of weeks ago and found the first lot ok. It was a bit viscous but couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. The second lot was much harder to get down and don't really know why but managed it. I've got to do it again in a couple of weeks cos one of the polyps was quite flat and they couldn't remove there and then cos the surgeon needs to do it. Oh joy!!! But just try your best to get it down you cos you don't want to have to go again if your bowel isn't clean enough.

One thing I'm confused about is what you can and can't eat. I've got 2 leaflets. One says cheese is ok but the other says cottage or cream cheese. It says you can have ice cream and custard but then the other sheet says no. I've also read you can eat plain biscuits like rich tea but the one I have says no biscuits or cake. Are plain cream crackers OK? Last time I was super strict with my diet cos I wasn't sure which I found harder than thd moviprep.

Crinkle77 · 25/06/2023 23:41

Oh yeah and one leaflet says plain yoghurt is fine but the other leaflet says to avoid.

worldwidetravel2017 · 25/06/2023 23:51

Yogurt is dairy - id avoid

Custard and rich tea biccie are ok

worldwidetravel2017 · 25/06/2023 23:52

Ritz biscuits/ crackers
Plain crackers yes

Tinkerbyebye · 25/06/2023 23:53

The trick I found is make sure it’s cold, use a straw, take a good glue, followed immediately with a sip or two of elderflower cordial (other non red squashes will do) it takes the taste away straight away

Tinkerbyebye · 25/06/2023 23:54

Glug not glue

justasking111 · 26/06/2023 00:06

I used chewing gum straight after which helped I didn't finish the second batch but it was clear liquid by then

TimesRwo · 26/06/2023 00:12

Have had colonoscopies for many years and Moviprep really is the worst part!

I now manage to drink it all, as I mix it with sprite / 7Up, so that it tastes like flat lemonade when I drink it. But it took me a while to come up with that trick and I did have a couple of colonoscopies were my prep was recorded as poor and viability were therefore poor. I wasn’t asked to do it again until my next routine one, so I guess it depends why you’re doing it.

Moomuffin · 26/06/2023 13:09

Thanks again to everyone who replied. I managed about a litre and a half before completely giving up.

All went well this morning, colon looked nice and pink and showed no abnormalities. I also had a gastroscopy which was horrific, not helped by the fact they couldn’t sedate me as they couldn’t get a cannula in. Hey ho.
All done now, so an afternoon of chilling on the sofa with the dog!

Glad it was all OK, OP. I have Crohn's so have had loads of scopes in my time. Moviprep is the worst; I always throw it up. If you need to do this again, ask for Picolax instead. There's a lot less volume to get down.
