To ask about diazepam dosage

I realise I sound stupid
But does 2 x 2mg diazepam tablets = 4mg?

Like I know the maths but wasn't sure if it was a certain amount of the tablet rather than total amount if that makes sense.

Be RX 2mg for panic in a certain situation (think flying so only occasional use) but tried it for first time and didn't feel 2mg

Tried 2x 2mg and felt almost nothing, maybe slightly tired but no more relaxed really

Wondering if 3x 2mg would be the same as 6mg so is safe to take ?

(I've only been RX 10 tablets so I'm not going to keep trying different amounts but it would be good to know how much I need before the event

Dr said I can take more if needed but I didn't check how much is ok

You can usually take up to 30mg a day.

Thanks, so yes from what I've read, 10mg 3 times a day

But would 5 x 2mg tablets be the same as a 10mg tablet? That's what I just want to be sure of

Just note that diazepam has a long half life. If you take it at night to sleep for example, you might still feel drowsy the following day. I had 2mg once and felt wiped out the entire next day! Everyone has a different tolerance though, but I wouldn't plan to drive/operate machinery too soon after taking a larger dose.

OneTC · 25/06/2023 09:57

I think you should speak to your doctor though before increasing that much. Guidelines for dosage also change as you get older.

Bromptotoo · 25/06/2023 10:06

Yes 2*2mg is 4mg. Depending on your reason for needing it, the minimum dose where the 'scrip says 'up to' and what's manufactured or available at the time your prescription is made up you may have to take more than 1, or even 2, tablets to achieve the required dose.

As already mentioned any medication has a 'half life' based on how quickly it can be broken down and eliminated from the body.

Also be aware that Diazepam is part of a group of drugs called Benzodiazepines; there is a risk that (a) their apprent effectiveness declines with frequent use and (b) addiction. The patient information leaflet will cover this but it's a real thing and one reason they're not used as they were 50 or so years ago when they were seen as a wonder drug.

BlackAndWhiteUsername · 25/06/2023 10:25

Thank you. I definitely won't be taking them regularly so I'm not worried about addiction (obviously I've taken them a couple of times over the past few days to see how it affect me)

But I just need a short term relief for panic, possibly 4 times a year as I was relying on alcohol to calm me and I'd really rather not

(Although not sure which is worse 6-10mg diazepam or a bottle or two of wine 🙈

Well I took 6mg almost two hours ago and have felt absolutely nothing!! So I think this clearly isn't the medication for me 😩

How have you found a doctor that’s willing to even prescribe that amount several times a year.
I use it for neck spasms and the most my doctor will ever prescribe is 3 tablets. So one a day for 3 days. 2 or 5mg, usually 2. I probably get that once a year, sometimes twice but any more than that and they won’t prescribe.

The 10 tablets was for the year. But I wanted to see how it affected me first before I needed it glad I did because it's had zero effect 🙈

I take diazepam for fear of flying and although I don’t feel any physical effects i generally do seem to be calmer on flights when I take it so don’t write it off just yet, just because you’d don’t feel drowsy or high!

Sapphire387 · 25/06/2023 18:13

You need to test it out in an actual stressful situation. It can be quite a subtle drug (in my experience) and you shouldn't necessarily feel an awful lot when testing it out on a regular day.

isadoradancing123 · 25/06/2023 18:16

2 mg is barely anything, 5 mg may be some help if you not used to it, 10 mg fine occasionally and then higher than that would be on medical advice

Monkeynuts57 · 25/06/2023 18:49

Erm … I think the way I understand it , is that’ you would only know ,if it’s worked , if you take it at the time of high stress/panic!?
Not when you already feel ok/normal?
! I might be wrong about this though

BlackAndWhiteUsername · 25/06/2023 19:56

Thanks, not to go into detail but today was the situation I was hoping to use it and I was just as bad as I am without it, still the same panic and stress
