To ask adults to eat of IKEA kalas children's plates?

Having a family party, about 20 adults coming plus children.

I'm getting extra Kalas plastic IKEA plates for the kids as they're good value and will either be used again by us for birthdays etc or can be easily passed on to others.

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kalas-plate-mixed-colours-80461380/

I don't have anywhere near 20 adult plates. There's a place near me that rents sets but it's not got any availability. Picnic plates etc are all pretty expensive if I want 20.

Nice paper plates are all about 23cm diameter, with quite a bit of rim. The IKEA plates are 19 cm diameter but no rim so actually probably the same space for food on them.

AIBU if I just get a big load of the IKEA children's plates so everyone eats off them?

YABU - you should get paper plates for adults
YANBU - plastic IKEA kids plates all round!

What type of food? If a roast dinner poss a bit tricky, but if it’s finger food would be fine. I’d love it personally, use what you’ve got and don’t go to extremes/spend loads. Good luck with the cooking!

DappledThings · 24/06/2023 19:05

Why wouldn't it be OK? They are just plates. If you think someone's going to be judging you when you're being kind enough to host that many people then they're being dicks.

Oh yes that info would help! It's just going to be bread and meat and salads type buffet.

For a buffet? Fine. For a roast? No.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/06/2023 19:07

Totally fine!! We (as in my entire family and friendship group) all have these sets in our camping boxes and use them for all meals when away

SittinOnTheDock · 24/06/2023 19:07

Off. Eat OFF plates not OF! Hate that there's no edit button.

They are tiny though?

viques · 24/06/2023 19:08

I think they are fine. But not the matching cutlery and mugs, that’s a step too far! What you could do is find some napkins, table cloths etc in a similar colour range so it looks as though you have carefully curated the entire thing…….

(paper plates are a nightmare anyway, you can’t balance them or cut anything on them)

75p per plate, 25cm diameter. Another option?
Are you likely to have another family do?

In our insane family we're 40+ people for a Boxing Day hot buffet.... People are tasked with bringing plates or bowls as part of it!

OFTAST white, Plate - IKEA

OFTAST white, Plate. This tableware has the same look and feel as bone porcelain, but is made of tempered glass. This means that we can push the price down and you get an elegant and shiny product – at a lower cost.

The children’s plates are much sturdier than paper plates. Much better for a party imho.

Thanks, I had thought about those but as they're glass I was a bit worried about them being dropped/knocked over and breaking when little ones are running around. We're likely to be in the garden so I was thinking maybe people will leave them on the ground etc where they could easily be broken.

Put a nice IKEA paper napkin on top to make them look nice.

A charity shop will be your friend here

It's always useful to have twenty mismatched but lovely dinner plates. I prefer plain white, but if you don't want to lash out on the ikea 365 range, look out in charity shops.

The correct grammar is "eat off of" ;)

It will likely to cheaper to buy new from Ikea. Plus the plates aren't "contaminated" with the smell of old people's homes or whatever

ChildrenOfRuin · 24/06/2023 19:25

It sounds fine to me.

The plastic plates will be sturdier than a paper plate so easier to eat food from.

I wouldn’t worry too much about them being slightly on the small side. If it’s a buffet then people can always go back for more food if they couldn’t fit enough on the plate the first time round.

BelindaBears · 24/06/2023 19:25

It’s totally fine, we often have the whole family eating off these.

Lcb123 · 24/06/2023 19:27

Of course that’s fine. Paper plates are rubbish to eat off. And so wasteful

WhiteFire · 24/06/2023 19:28

Absolutely fine, even more so if it is outside. In my house you get your food on whatever plates are available.

Biscoffpancake · 24/06/2023 19:29

would be totally fine but if you wanted bigger plates sainsburys do the picnic style plastic plates in packs of 4 for £2 per pack!

steff13 · 24/06/2023 19:30

I bought a set of those to feed my cat on. I sometimes use the clean ones for a sandwich or something small if I'm just having a little something for lunch.

What a horrible comment.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 24/06/2023 19:44

I’d way rather eat from one of the kids plates than a flimsy paper plate

Clymene · 24/06/2023 19:44

It's fine but they're basically side plates.
