To ask adults to eat of IKEA kalas children's plates?

Having a family party, about 20 adults coming plus children.

I'm getting extra Kalas plastic IKEA plates for the kids as they're good value and will either be used again by us for birthdays etc or can be easily passed on to others.

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kalas-plate-mixed-colours-80461380/

I don't have anywhere near 20 adult plates. There's a place near me that rents sets but it's not got any availability. Picnic plates etc are all pretty expensive if I want 20.

Nice paper plates are all about 23cm diameter, with quite a bit of rim. The IKEA plates are 19 cm diameter but no rim so actually probably the same space for food on them.

AIBU if I just get a big load of the IKEA children's plates so everyone eats off them?

YABU - you should get paper plates for adults
YANBU - plastic IKEA kids plates all round!

Seems like a decent alternative to paper plates as they're not single use and guests will be able to fit more on them as they're more sturdy.

JMSA · 24/06/2023 19:48

You're overthinking it! It's fine Smile

Thelnebriati · 24/06/2023 19:49

They're find, I get similar ones from the pound shop. You get a pack of about 5 for a pound. Last time I was in they also had melamine.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/06/2023 19:52

I think it’s absolutely fine for a buffet where people can easily go up for seconds (or more) if they can’t fit everything they want on the plate first time.

Okshacky · 24/06/2023 19:53

Personified go cheap China plates any day but I’m not a fan of plastic.

@HorseyMel

What a pathetic comment

PinkButtercups · 24/06/2023 19:56

@HorseyMel Urgh, your comment is really nasty.

PinkButtercups · 24/06/2023 19:58

They're fine!

I regularly use my DS's plates for food... 😅.

Sometimes it's spider man, peppa pig or paw patrol!

notsofamous · 24/06/2023 20:02

They’re fine, and the colours are nice too. Easy to hold. Kalas means party, so they are party plates anyway.. :)

BungleandGeorge · 24/06/2023 20:03

I’d be fine with it however I think they’re very small for those who eat more, especially salads and bread as they take up a lot of space on the plate. I think you’ll get sarcastic comments about diets and child size portions tbh and they’re only better than disposable if you will actually use them all again. Could you just ask people to bring their own?

Oh come off it. Don't be so sensitive.

Also, I bet there are plenty of people on here who wouldn't eat off charity shop or car boot sale plates and cutlery.

Simonlebonbon · 24/06/2023 20:04

@HorseyMel what about restaurants etc?

Do they never eat in a restaurant?!
as long as they’re not chipped it’s absolutely fine

I'm willing to bet you have and you don't know it.

All my university plates, cutlery, pots and pans were from charity shops and bootsales, some lasted me 20yrs!

FrillyGoatFluff · 24/06/2023 20:27

Actually ate off these at a bbq today! They were great, stopped your salad dressing running onto your lap 😂

In my defence, I can usually keep my food on a plate, but 14mo DD was 'helping,' so the lip was bloody handy!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/06/2023 20:46

Plastic or paper...I'd go for paper rather than so much plastic.

SimonsCow · 24/06/2023 21:09

Absolutely fine. Even preferable to paper or china plates if some people will be standing or eating without a table. Light to hold and keeps everything from falling off. It’s a buffet so they can go back for seconds if they can’t fit enough on the plate (maybe good for portion control too!)

Thanks, I had thought about those but as they're glass I was a bit worried about them being dropped/knocked over and breaking when little ones are running around. We're likely to be in the garden so I was thinking maybe people will leave them on the ground etc where they could easily be broken.

I swear those glass plates are lethal. We had a full set with the idea that as I drop so many they could be replaced easily but when Ive dropped them they shatter into so many pieces!
I think the kids plastic ones are great we have a few sets at home but never thought of getting more for when entertaining! Good idea

Gemstar2 · 24/06/2023 21:55

Oh thank you for starting this thread OP, I have been having the great party plate debate in my mind too! Will be heading to sainsburys in the hope of finding those picnic plates too . Hope your party goes well!

Have you ever heard of a dishwasher?

“Don’t be so sensitive” is your standard response from a bully being called out on it.
Don’t be a twat.

Hankunamatata · 24/06/2023 22:48

I have those ones and still use them years later now kids are teens as so handy.

Hankunamatata · 24/06/2023 22:49

The ikea ones. I used them for buffets all the time. They are handy and light

Sleepyquest · 24/06/2023 22:49

I eat off them a lot, I love em
