To not pay to choose seats but expect to sit together?

I'll be flying with easyjet on a short flight (just over an hour) soon. It will be me, my toddler (2 years 4 months) and my baby (four months). Baby will be on my lap. According to the website they will sit children near an accompanying adult - surely in the case of a two year old this means next to?! I really don't want to spend another £20 on choosing seats if it's unnecessary.

I personally never bother with Easyjet BUT I do make sure I check in 30 days in advance on the dot to ensure my family is sat together. We've always been put together, even on flights listed as sold out. It's entirely up to you.

They really won’t.

Nobody ever thought airlines would start charging you to bring a hold bag. And then they never thought airlines would start charging you to bring a cabin bag.

And yet here we are.

Georgyporky · 24/06/2023 18:13

We don't pay, but we're not bothered. Makes sense to pay a small amount to sit together if it's important.
BTW, Ryan Air aren't the only bastards, Wizz Air deliberately split up people who won't pay.

I was on a Ryanair flight where a 3/4 year old was seated down the front of the plane and dad at the back. The seats behind him/me about 8 rows, were all empty but they wouldn't allow them to sit together despite him asking. The child, bless her, didn't make a fuss but after take off they both just sat in the empty rows and nothing was said. They stayed there for landing too.

No airline make you stay in your seats once the seatbelt sign is off.

NuffSaidSam · 24/06/2023 18:13

Mammamia2023 · 24/06/2023 18:09

🤣🤣

I also wouldn’t move because I will have paid the price to get the seat I want!

Is the seat you want next to an unaccompanied 2 year old?! That's the last seat on the plane I'd want.

RiseYpres · 24/06/2023 18:14

why not just pay for peace of mind? £20 is not alot in the scheme of things. Plus i really detest being asked to move for a parent with a quivering lip who could not be bothered to pay when I have paid for and chosen a seat. The entitlement irritates me. Not the only one I assume.

Soapyspuds · 24/06/2023 18:15

I think airlines need to approach this differently. Too many entitled people these days expecting the world to revolve around them and their children yet not paying for the privelege, then flights getting delayed when the poor crew have to deal with asking people to move.

If all airlines put a £15 per head surcharge on families with children under 8 year olds, which then gave them guaranteed seats together that would makes sense.

FWIW yes I do have children and yes I do pay the extra for allocated seats.

Georgyporky · 24/06/2023 18:15

There was a point upthread about airlines might start making people pay to use the loo. That (insert nasty word) O'Leary proposed to do just that.

The only reason airlines have got away with charging for this is because of the mugs who just accepted it and paid up.

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 24/06/2023 17:45

Do whatever you want.
But if I'm next to you and your kid is behind you, I'm not moving. Because I paid my tenner.

That's my policy, too.

ilovethecold · 24/06/2023 18:07

My friend went on holiday with her 3 year old last month and forgot to book the seats and her daughter was 2 rows in front of her with no one moving. Her little girl kept everyone amused on the flight sharing her sweets round.

I think that sentence was meant to be; 'her little girl annoyed the shit out of everyone by sharing her sweets around'.

ScottBakula · 24/06/2023 18:16

I agree with most of pp , pay the £20 so you can sit together , as you say yourself it would be a dickish thing to do to get someone to move.
If your DC is in front / behind you how would you stop the from standing on the seat to see you or try to push past the person on the aisle to get to you ?

SerafinasGoose · 24/06/2023 18:17

Not this again?

AuntieMarys · 24/06/2023 18:17

Oh just pay

HappiDaze · 24/06/2023 18:17

They sit under 12 DC with a parent

No.

Why should people pay for something they don't need or want, such as food, luggage space, a specific seat?

I love a la carte pricing. I buy what I want from the airlines and others are free to do the same. I don't purchase what I don't need.

Those who need a seat next to a family member, should buy it.

ImAOneWayMotorway · 24/06/2023 18:18

My youngest is the same age as your toddler, I'd pay to ensure everyone is sat together. We aren't moving because you are a cheeky chancer travelling alone with 2 kids, I'd 100% decline to switch with you. I assume you accept you might be sat behind your toddler, that counts as nearby in airline terms.

newjobnewstartihope · 24/06/2023 18:19

People who don't agree with it always fly with low cost airlines

Ok well you make your stand.

I’ll pay £20 on an annual holiday to sit next to my family.

babyproblems · 24/06/2023 18:22

I’m with you OP I think it’s a ridiculous, money grabbing policy that’s literally the only point of it. I won’t fly with cheap airlines who charge for this because it’s a fucking piss take and they don’t deserve my business. Call and ask them - I expect they legally have to sit you with your two year old. I expect they’ll try not to tell you a clear answer. x

One of my besties and Ryanair hater says she would piss on the seat rather than pay to use the loo on the plane. TBH I don't think he would ever get away with denying people having their basic human needs met in that situation. Half the time MO'L is just shit stirring for the publicity!

CapEBarra · 24/06/2023 18:23

I’ve never paid for my kids. I always hoped they’d be placed elsewhere so I could have a bit of peace, but no, they were always plonked right next to me.

(this is a joke, keyboard warriors! Seriously though I’ve never paid extra, never asked anyone to change seats, and I wouldn’t).

Bluewhale40 · 24/06/2023 18:24

If you check in as soon as check in opens you will get seats together.

I have never paid and never not all been seated in a row. I have 4 kids and have flown a lot with easyJet and Ryanscare, though have not flown with the latter recently.

Always check in as soon as possible though.

I was thinking the same, this has been done to death, I've only read to the end to see if anything that hasn't been posted many times before was said,

You're not paying less for not having those things.

Everyone else is paying more if they want them.

It's difficult to say no to paying for luggage because your luggage needs are largely dictated by the reason for your travel and the length of your stay.

Paying for seats is where passengers should all just have said, "You're having a laugh, right? No." Given that most people don't actually need to be seated beside their travelling companions, it's an argument the passengers could have won against the airlines by just refusing to pay (and then causing chaos for airline staff by moving around once on the plane).

But because enough people started paying, it's now become a thing.

Another prediction: airlines will start saying you can't bring your own food and drink but must only eat or drink food purchased on board.
