I don’t like using the fly repellent sprays in the house

We live rurally and this week they have gone mad, and coming in the house in droves!

please give me your tips that don’t involve swatting and will keep them from buzzing round the house (we already have an electric swatter 😈)

There is already another massive thread about this going around. Let me find it and link it.

I was just thinking that I need to buy another of these, as it was extremely effective last summer. It attracts the flies outdoors so that they - or at least the vast majority - do not even enter your house in the first place.

Ah I hadn’t spotted that - thanks!

And if you can stomach emptying the containers after, you can always refill them with orange juice!
They do last for ages though.

Fly screens? I got some cut to shape ones that you cut to shape and stick on. It’s easy to remove tape at the end of summer and you can peel fly screen fabric up to open window.

I also spray them with a deet for fabric weekly I’m hoping that will kill off midgies sneaking through the gaps. Seems to be working so far.

Nojumpingorrunning · 24/06/2023 17:32

@Badbudgeter could you show me what you mean? And how do you open the windows ?

I put net up at the door so that I can have the door open when it’s hot. Keeps the flies out

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 24/06/2023 17:35

Get a cat! Mine eats them all....

I discovered last summer an easy way to get rid of house flies. I always find they lie on surfaces such as light fittings over the island, cabinets and so on. I simply turn on the hoover, creep up on them very slowly and 99% of the time they get sucked in from a short
distance. Try it, it was a game changer for me!

We have a magnetic fly screen on doors and windows. The door one means Ddog can come and go as she pleases as the magnets draw back together again. Opening and closing windows is easy (advantage of magnets).
Easy to install, has a Velcro sticky surround which sticks to the new window and door frame, with our older wooden window frames, we fixed using drawing pinsBlush not ideal, but the frames are going to be replaced soon anyway.
Absolute game changer this year! No flying / biting / stinging wee beasties coming in, and we can leave the windows open at night.

So it’s this stuffhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/55671-00021-03-Insect-Standard-Washable-Windows/dp/B0001M0H7S/ref=mp_s_a_1_19?crid=3CG9Q7SZTBFUW&keywords=fly%2Bscreens%2Bfor%2Bwindows&qid=1687624625&sprefix=fly%2Bscree%2Caps%2C248&sr=8-19&th=1&psc=1

It comes in a big sheet which you cut to size. It also comes with double sided tape that you put on corners etc. You just peel the fly screen away from the tape and open the window then stick it back down. I checked and the tape peels away without damaging paintwork.

I also spray them with this but I just take them all down layer, spray and flip and respray.Quite expensive repellent but I don’t use much.

You can get fly screens for windows, which attach with a magnetic strip which is applied to the window frame. Screen sticks to the strip, and when you want to open the window you can just pull it away from the strip , open the window and then stick the screen . If you Google magnetic window screen you'll get the idea. Good luck.

We have put fly screens on the windows we open and also on the patio door.

They are not the prettiest, but worth it in my book! We rarely get flies in unless dh opens a window without a screen.

These are the ones we bought.

But what a pain to drag the hoover out each time!
