To think matching twin names are cringy?

My friend’s pregnant with twins and is excitedly shortlisting names in our group chat. Quite a few of her suggestions have either matching initials or rhyme, or both.

Obviously it’s her and her husband’s choice and I’m not going to piss on her chips, but AIBU to think matching names are a bad idea?

I used to work with a guy called Steven. He an identical twin brother called Stephen. I kid you not.

Knowing of a Chardonnay and Merlot, Peter and Paul, Julian and Julia and James and John absolutely nothing surprises me now.
My cousins are Emily and Bellamy 🙄

Couldyounot · 23/06/2023 18:22

Rhyming names were a no for us. Regarding matching outfits, sometimes they want to dress the same as each other. Usually this will manifest as a desire to wear some garment of which you were only able to obtain one.

Slightly off topic but back in my early working years in a payroll job I onboarded 2 new joiners on the same day.

They had the same initials, surname, same middle initial , same date of birth and sequential NI numbers. I still remember their names (but won't share on here for obvious reasons).

Caused quite a lot of paperwork confusion and then a helpful colleague deleted one of them because he thought they were duplicate 😂😂😂

I always wondered what their parents were thinking.

I mentioned on another thread this week, my twins have very different names and the schools where they grew up, overseas, put them in different classes from day one so that they develop their own identity through interests and friendships. Now that they are almost fully fledged adults, nearly finished with Uni in different cities they have boyfriends with bloody identical names 🤦‍♀️

Late MIL used to refer to them as the twins and was most put out when I referred to their cousin as the boy to make my point. She also insisted on buying matching clothes, so I used them on different days.

Justtobeclear · 23/06/2023 18:24

I was always keen for mine to have their own identities so they have different names.

I'm usually each to their own but have to agree on rhyming twin names, there is a Macy & Darcy in DDs school which I did a bit of a 😬 when their mum told me the names. I think it didn't help that I knew at least 4 Darceys who were born within weeks of each other.

There are several sets of twins in both mine and DHs family, also went to school with a few, they all have individual names, closest rhyming names were Kelly & Mandy but she was Amanda preferred Mandy.

Macy and Darcy don’t rhyme?

Are you sure they aren't choosing this? There are twins in my family and they used to request matching clothes themselves. Siblings often do this as well.

Positive. I’ve heard them complaining about it.

I agree, they could be more imaginative. I’m related to non-identical opposite-sex twins and they have completely different names and unless you know they’re twins you wouldn’t be able to tell.
If they want some link they could look at pairs in history and mythology but Jack and Jill is just lazy

Bit of pub trivia Jack & Gill were both spirit measures a jack was half a gill. Thee King reduced the size of a jack - and Gill came tumbling after!

CoQ10 · 23/06/2023 18:33

I had this predicament. I have twins and by chance the names I liked best had the same initial.

I was told not to do it so I did.

It's never been an issue.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/06/2023 18:41

Harmony and Melody were Captain Scarlet Angels along with Symphony, Rhapsody and Destiny long before the Queens Nose came along.

I don't really like matching names but I am pretty sure if I had twin girls they would have been Nora and Dora.

MrsCLogan · 23/06/2023 18:56

I once worked with someone who seriously planned to call her twins Han and Leia until she found out they were both boys. She named them Harrison Han and Indiana Jack…
Serious commitment there.

loverains · 23/06/2023 19:26

Pottedpalm I actually know siblings called Tilly and Lily, although completely accidental. They had an Olivia and years later a Penelope and then Matilda, Olivia chose Lily, after Matilda was already Tilly so Lily, Penny and Tilly.

cadetmumstress · 23/06/2023 22:14

I have twin cousins in their 50s - Dan and Andrea. They were often referred to by their parents as a single unit 'Dandrea' when growing up (e.g can someone call Dandrea in for tea). Very strange.

For some odd reason Ronnie and Reggie is also popular.

Next door's cats are called Ronnie and Reggie!

SittinOnTheDock · 23/06/2023 22:16

No twins = no opinion on this I'm afraid

Jap26 · 23/06/2023 22:21

I once worked with twins called Rythym and symphony

Macy and Darcy don’t rhyme?

This??

Cincinnatus · 23/06/2023 23:15

My younger brother and I share the male/female equivalent of a name. So had the same initials. Never had any problems/teasing 🤷‍♀️

Whichwhatnow · 23/06/2023 23:15

I know male/female twins called Christian and Christine.

Both go by Chris (which you would have thought their parents might have anticipated...)

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/06/2023 23:32

I know a brother and sister called Alpha and Omega.
I also know sisters called Sharon and Karen. (They don't have brothers called Darren and Warren though)

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 23/06/2023 23:34

Oh but l would.love twin girls called Ruby and Scarlett!

Sugarfree23 · 23/06/2023 23:38

I can understand parents being attracted to similar sounding names, but I think having the same first initial is a bad idea for any siblings.

ninja · 23/06/2023 23:40

I taught a set of identical twins called Nathan and Nathaniel - the same name!

MrsO3 · 23/06/2023 23:47

I know a Cali & Mari. Their mum craved squid in pregnancy.

Tell me this is a joke 😂
