To think matching twin names are cringy?

My friend’s pregnant with twins and is excitedly shortlisting names in our group chat. Quite a few of her suggestions have either matching initials or rhyme, or both.

Obviously it’s her and her husband’s choice and I’m not going to piss on her chips, but AIBU to think matching names are a bad idea?

I know twins Wayne and Shane, and their older sister charmaine

momtoboys · 23/06/2023 16:57

I have two sets of fraternal male twins. We specifically stayed away from matchy names and I never dressed them alike either. Great for people that enjoy that type of thing, just not for us.

SchoolShenanigans · 23/06/2023 16:59

I find it just as cringy as mums of multiples who dress their children the same. It's just tacky in my opinion.

momtoboys · 23/06/2023 16:59

Now that I am thinking about it, if one of my sets of twins had been two girls they both would have had a name that started with M so that is kind of matchy. They would have had the same middle name too because all of my children have the same middle name.

ThreeFeetTall · 23/06/2023 17:00

I knew someone that was planning to call her kids Rod and Stewart Grin

Mommyofvikings · 23/06/2023 17:10

If you think that's cringe you'd think I was ridiculous..

My whole family from my partner right down to our 4 month old twins (without matching or rhyming names) goes in alphabetical order

A, B, C, D, E, F (not those letters but you get the gist)

Mommyofvikings · 23/06/2023 17:18

I have non identical twin boys. I have to say I'm guilty of sorta dressing them the same but the rest is ridiculous. I never call them the twins and hate it when people do. Also their names don't match or rhyme.

The dressing thing is purely down to money. I buy a pack of 4 tshirs and a 2 pack of pants so they have the same colours on or the same outfit but different colours. I refuse to spend loads of money on clothes as they grow so quick atm.

Arniesleftleg · 23/06/2023 17:18

Not twin related, but I once knew a lady that had loads of kids, I never knew how many exactly but some were called Leon, Seon, Dion, and Katie 🤣

ChadCMulligan · 23/06/2023 17:19

@Mommyofvikings Do you need to be careful with how many children you have? Just thinking that after little Zoe you'll need to move to Excel style naming and have Aaron and then Abbas

My sister and I (not twins) had the occasional matching outfit, which we liked because it felt special when we did match as most of the time we didn’t!
My MIL used to dress her kids matching as she could spot them more easily out and about, which makes sense given she had 3 under 5.

I have known many twins over the years, the ones that stand out to me were:
Megan & Regan
Rudy & Rocky
Mollie & Max (called M&M)
Frankie & Freddie
Ronnie & Connie

A friend had twin boys, & wanted a pair of names that "went together".

I suggested Castor & Pollux, she was not impressed.

Mommyofvikings · 23/06/2023 17:25

Haha believe me I won't be having any more. The last 2 are literally my last 2. Besides, I can't think of any names I like with the next letter 😂

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 23/06/2023 17:29

Does it matter? Their choice for their child. Their business. End of.

MargaretThursday · 23/06/2023 17:40

Are you objecting to my triplets: Felix, Felicity and Florence?

whatausername · 23/06/2023 17:41

She sounds like she doesn't know how to parent twins. Has she any interest in learning? How sad it will be if their own mother lumps them together as one entity. Others in their lives will do that often enough and it's detrimental.

ladygindiva · 23/06/2023 17:47

I have twins and tried to avoid " matchy" names. I agree op.

Itsallsostressful · 23/06/2023 17:53

Amy Child's twins are Millie and Billy 😳

Tangoes · 23/06/2023 17:56

What about Jerry Hall? I think she's Jerry May and her twin is Terry Fay.Or something to that effect.
In Bollywood cinema there were two sisters Dimple and Simple.

Twins with matching initials = problems for them signing up for stuff as they both have the same first initial, same surname and same date of birth.

All that post that arrives to Miss S Smith - who opens it?!?!

Do from a twin that that the same initial as her sister (my bestie) then please don't do it!

mastertomsmum · 23/06/2023 17:58

We knew a Fern and Freya and I thought it was very pretty

lanthanum · 23/06/2023 18:00

Same initial - problematic with official letters, although there aren't many of those nowadays.
Rhyming - if you're calling one of them, it's not easy for them to tell which.

Not insurmountable, but I'd avoid either.

Ragged · 23/06/2023 18:10

2 sets of ID twins are my close relatives: they never expressed dislike that they had matching names, matching initials, were dressed the same, were called the twins, or "Josie and Joan" in one breath, etc. They are age 64 & 80 now. If anything, i perceive they resented all the efforts to separate them at school.

KimberleyClark · 23/06/2023 18:11

I saw someone on a game show called Rhapsody. She had a sister called Symphony.

This. My friend has twin boys and they’re well into junior school age now, but they’re still dressed in matching clothes. I feel sorry for them, they never get a chance to express their individuality.

Are you sure they aren't choosing this? There are twins in my family and they used to request matching clothes themselves. Siblings often do this as well.
