Privacy from neighbours

My neighbours are paranoid about their own privacy yet built a massive patio overlooking my garden so that every time they use it they're looking straight down into my garden . They have not considered or respected our privacy at all . When the idea was first mooted they said they would put a trellis up but then expected us to do it. Their yappy dog is now at head height and has a frenzied go at me every time I so much as breathe on my own patio and I'm sick of it . Any suggestions welcome.. we are not on speaking terms even though we used to get on well . They built a massive extension now a massive patio. ....Just because you can doesn't mean you should! . It is total selfishness in my opinion especially in a normal residential street and they have not considered anybody else but themselves. . If they want to do things like that and shut themselves off from the world they should piss off to the middle of nowhere

If it's more than 30cm off the ground I believe it needs planning permission. Not sure on the details but as you are not speaking anyway I would be on to planning to see if anything can be done.

StylishM · 21/06/2023 08:02

Are you on a significant hill or is the patio elevated?

Screwballs · 21/06/2023 08:02

Ok patio overlooking aside, the rest of your post is unreasonable. If they got planning, they are entitled to extend all they want, why should they give a crap whether you like it or not, its their home.

"If they want to do things like that and shut themselves off from the world they should piss off to the middle of nowhere"... If you cant live next to people without getting this angry, maybe you ought to take your own advice.

Might need planning permission

Put up a trellis. If you want to feel you got one over on them make it look terrible on their side. Get one of those bark stop things and you should be able to enjoy your backyard.

Do you have pictures, hard to visualise

Meeting · 21/06/2023 08:38

Sounds like you're the one who needs to "piss off to the middle of nowhere".

EvilElsa · 21/06/2023 08:45

Head height 😮
I would be really concerned about the effect on your house value as it would be an immediate no from me at a viewing unless properly concealed. You may not be planning to sell obviously, but something to think about.
I'd definitely put trellis up with climbing plants as soon as possible, or bamboo in pots (don't plant in the ground). You could also put up a sail style covering so they can't see down.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 21/06/2023 08:50

Their yappy dog is now at head height

This deffo needs a diagram or pic, i just can not visualise what you mean.

brunettemic · 21/06/2023 08:52

How are the climbing up to this new patio that is presumably on stilts, did they install a lift or some sort of pulley system? Do they down using a slide? I need details!

NutellaNut · 21/06/2023 09:44

I had this with a previous neighbour (minus the dog) and it was very annoying. I invested in a load of huge bamboos in enormous pots which were about 8ft/9ft tall. Not a cheap option, but gave back some of the privacy.

Firecrackers every time the dog barks. Scare it shitless and it won't come near you.L eylandii grow very rapidly.
