OK, I know I am BU. I am 5'3", so not tiny. I went to a gig last night to a group that I was a huge fan of as a teenager and as soon as I arrived I realised there was no televised screen therefore I would not see anything. I should have seen it coming, it was a summer festival tent, not a venue as such with facilities. I moved around a bit eventually catching glimpses of the band every now again only to be immediately blocked again by a big person standing in front.

This weekend I also had my DD's gymnastics display which was a local thing with fold up chairs in a gym. A child sat in front of me and only then did I realise the huge relief I felt as I had been anxious a big man would sit in front and that was it ruined for me. Yes I could have craned my neck and been uncomfortable but DD would not have seen me and she was really nervous and needed to keep looking to me for reassurance.

It just got me thinking of all the times in my life I have paid to see something but just spent my time looking at the back of big stupid necks and shoulders, of feeling like my face was shoved into an arm pit. I have lost interest in live music and certain other things for this very reason but we are supposed to just put up with it, tough luck its your fault for being smaller.

Would it really be unreasonable for allowances to be made. I get there are many working problems with segregation by size but it seems to me that its not completely unworkable. For example there could be a priority viewing area in the front of gigs for people under 5'5", if they chose to move there. Or in a more casual setting, would be it unreasonable to ask - God forbid - that a taller person sits on the back row. I find it hard to believe tall people are all so selfish, I'm sure many would comply but this needs to be organised and normalised. It would be no more unfair than a person paying for a ticket not to see what they paid for.

I think the Romans had the best idea with their stepped seating theatres.

Most theatres and venues aren't steep enough!

This is very true

WhatInFreshHell · 20/06/2023 17:33

I'm only an inch taller than you OP and I've never encountered anything like this...5ft 3 isn't that short?

ThatsRoughBuddy · 20/06/2023 17:41

How sturdy are booster seats in theatres? Are they only suitable for a child’s weight or could a short but lardy adult use one? This could be a game changer for me!

Scrunchymum · 20/06/2023 17:45

Weird thread.

You have the trump card though, the potential to be tallest and be the most hated person at a gig. The woman on someone’s shoulders.

Ha I wish! There is a big difference between a petite little woman and a short legged big bottomed busty one like me. No one would ever offer to lift me! And I don't get to delicately curl into plane seats either, I may have leg room but my ample bosom means I have to tie my seat belt blind and can't bend forward to reach things from the floor in front.

So clearly what we need are height adjustable seats in theatres.... you input your height into the control box and it moves up and down to level off the sightline of the whole row....

I hate the stalls in the theatre. Everyone I go with prefers them for the leg room and the proximity to the stage, but I'm 4'11" and nine time out of ten, I can't see anything.

It would help if people kept still, but that's a long gone dream.

I have to say that would be pretty cool (but probably quite expensive to install)

If you want to do a deal, you can use some of my height at gigs if I can use some of your ample bosom to increase my 32b cup when I can’t fill a strapless dress 🤝

Yes please! And it's a double win for me cos I can see the act AND I can jump up and down without being embarrassed by bouncy boobs!

Sorry to keep coming back to this thread but I love that deals are now happening!

I just wish the tall community could be more aware of their backpacks. I don't know how many times I've been knocked in the face by one. My DH was almost going to say something to a repeat offender in the Vatican at one point.

I wish short people would watch where they place their umbrellas. I’m sick of them hitting me in the face.

Wenfy · 20/06/2023 21:21

At the Beyonce concert my view was obstructed by chavvy short arses wearing ridiculously 6 inch heels. Was so tempted to kick their stumpy legs out from under them

MyEyesHurt · 20/06/2023 21:33

Hats also. Woman sat in front of me at the nativity and didn't take her enormous bobble hat off. She was two rows in front so I couldn't even ask her. I just had to quietly drown in my own tears.

Orchidgal · 20/06/2023 21:44

Well, as a tall person my posture is shot with all the slumping I have done over the years trying not to block others. Was at a wedding reception last weekend and caught myself doing it during the speeches.

Honestly - you win some, you lose some. If you are short, pay to sit at the front row of the balcony at the theatre if you want a good view.
If you are tall, you pay to sit in the exit row of the plane.

Short women get to feel all dinky and petite and get all the cute shoes.

Tall women get to eat more chocolate before the spare tyre shows up.

Perks for each!

upanddownandupanddown · 20/06/2023 21:51

YABU. I’m 6ft and what advantage we have in gigs etc is soon made up for by the inconvenience of shopping for long legs, large feet etc, and the discomfort of flying/being on a bus with limited leg room.

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/06/2023 22:17

"Short women get to feel all dinky and petite and get all the cute shoes."

Not necessarily, I'm 5' 1" and take a size 5.5. #PeggyHill No heels either, I can scarcely walk in flats, never mind heels!

hulahooper2 · 20/06/2023 22:52

Are you for real , that’s the most stupid thing I’ve read on here

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 20/06/2023 22:59

I'm 5.2 and DH is 6.4, are we not supposed to sit together at gigs, theatre etc? I get it's annoying as I'm a short arse myself but it's not like tall people do it on purpose.

Tell me you're tall without telling me you're tall

hulahooper2 · 20/06/2023 23:15

Well you’re wrong there

sashh · 21/06/2023 04:43

OP

Can I make a suggestion? Move to Otavalo in Ecuador. I'm 5 ft 0 and there I was tall.

I loved it.

Like everything there are advantages and disadvantages, I can buy boy's trainers, if I get the door seat on a plane I can lie full length on the floor to sleep.

I can stand upright in a coach without banging my head.

snitzelvoncrumb · 21/06/2023 04:50

If you want to sit at the front, then book a seat at the front. Tall people have to pay for extra leg room on flights. I am shorter than you and I agree it’s annoying. But it is what it is. I don’t go to things that you have to stand, no point. I often end up sitting behind tall people at events, I either sit on a jumper or sit on my legs or lean over and probably block the person behind me.

DazedConfusedDone · 21/06/2023 05:12

Don't go and see shit has beens at some crummy location, maybe?

I kinda agree. Went to the theatre recently and saw practically nothing because of two tall people sat in front of me.

Then you need to invest in better seats or get one of the boosters provided by the theatre.

I wish the short community would be more aware of their umbrellas, as the pointy bits of metal on them are often eyeball height to me. I don't know how many times I've been pushed past and had umbrella spokes scraping against my face/shoulders/neck.

There should be a minimum height restriction on umbrella sales.

small people I recommend a hood or sticking close to a licensed umbrella user

SunLover1985 · 21/06/2023 10:37

Shorter people could wear one of those hats with an umbrella built in. I agree them waving a brolly around at eye-height is an issue.

Im less than 5ft I rarely use an umbrella in crowded places as I'm worried I'll poke someone's eye out!
