“I thought I’d voice note because it’s easier”

More and more of my friends reply to my texts with a voice note and cite this exact phrase. Yes, it’s easier. But ONLY for the sender, not the recipient! I hate having to speed up the bastard things to get to the point of the message, when I could scan read a text in a matter of seconds.

Also, I don’t mind them when I’ve got a free day and can listen whilst pottering about with housework, but there’s no chance I can listen when I’m at work, so I have to leave them hanging for hours instead of seeing the text and quickly replying.

This voicenote thing seems to be somewhat of an advancement insofar as, "listen to me, listen to me. You don't speak, just listen to me". It may not be quite as rude, seeing as you can access it at will, but it seems a bit selfish.

That's definitely how it feels to me.

They're never especially short, so it comes across as a series of monologues. A one sided conversation. You either have to play them when there is no one else around (or inflict them on people around you), or hold your ear to your phone to listen so that can be a bit inconvenient and annoying compared to a text.

What’s really annoying is when there are important bits of info scattered through the voicenote, which you then need to listen to again & write down.

Unlike a text where they come ready written.

I don't mind them but only one of two of my mates really leave them.

Since this thread was revived we now have the existence of video notes on WhatsApp, not around when the thread was first created. I wonder how popular they'll be amongst receivers!
