To think there should be more than one toilet roll in a holiday let?

We’re staying in an Airbnb for the weekend. It’s a nice well equipped flat, though we had to bring our own towels and bed sheets - which is fine, we were warned and it’s very reasonably priced.

However this morning the loo roll has run out, and there are no spares.

AIBU to think providing just one loo roll in holiday let us unreasonably stingy?

Or should I have predicted this and brought my own toilet roll for a weekend away?

It's self catering so I'm d expect to have to provide pretty much everything.

Also my cousin has a holiday home and she says that if you leave anything out more than the bare minimum (big pile of loo rolls, loads of dishwasher tablets etc) it gets swiped.

WimpoleHat · 18/06/2023 08:56

no one owning a holiday let will leave a big bag of toilet rolls, as they will vanish, I would guarantee it.

Basically this. It’s unfortunate, but true…..!

FridayNightDinners · 18/06/2023 08:58

Loo roll threads always reveal that people have massively different habits and use massively different amounts.

Anywhere you have to take your own sheets is probably going to have the absolute minimum of everything.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 18/06/2023 08:58

I appreciate some people are arseholes and nick things. However, for convenience I'd rather have the extra £20 cost in case someone nicks loo roll, washing up liquid etc factored into the weekly rental price.

It feels really petty otherwise, and makes me petty - if the rental is poorly equipped and I've had to buy new everything then I bring every last thing home with me. If it's generally well stocked and I've only had to buy or restock a couple of things then I'm more Zen about leaving them.

How many of you are there? Surlwy one roll would be enough for a weekend?

I'd expect there to be spares though.

It depends if it's decent quality or that crappy stuff that just seems to disintegrate when you use it

I’ve stayed in very basic accommodation with no towels, bedding etc (camping barn type places) and I’d have expected to have brought everything including loo roll).

This one is a bit unusual as it’s not basic it’s a very nice flat. They left a bottle of wine and posh biscuits as a welcome gift. I’d rather have had the extra loo roll TBH!

We had this a couple of years ago. One nice, but not swanky, sc place had plenty of loo roll, dishwasher tablets, wash up liquid etc. Next place was a bit swankier with bottle of wine and biscuits but one dishwasher tablet and minimal other supplies. We said we'd rather have had more basics left than the wine!

I would assume and air bnb is like a self catering place? In which case I'd never expect toilet roll to be provided. It never is - more than one roll per bathroom. I always bring some.

I have found this in UK hotels too, including expensive ones. This is not helped as even 3 years on from covid, many hotels do not now service rooms every day. If we are staying in a hotel I usually pack an extra roll. If we are self catering I bring a packet of them. I can’t get over the person who thought that 1 roll would be enough for a short stay!

Really? I stay in many hotels and have not come across one where the rooms are not serviced daily. If you do run out of toilet rolls (or anything else) ring reception and they will send some up.

Lisdeflores · 18/06/2023 09:04

This drives me insane when staying in Airbnb. If it's made clear that you need to take toilet roll fair enough otherwise I think it's a fair assumption that enough will be provided.
My family of 3 couldn't make 1 roll last a whole weekend. Are the people that say they can sharing???!!!😆😆
Having been caught out on many occasions we now keep a 4 pack in the car .

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2023 09:05

MinnieMountain · 18/06/2023 08:11

If you had to bring your own towels and sheets, I wouldn’t expect more than a starter role.

Yep, definitely this.

EmeraldFox · 18/06/2023 09:06

I'd expect one per person per week to be adequate, so two for a weekend for a family. If it was self catered maybe one was just a courtesy though.

It’s self catering, we own a holiday let, the cleaner leaves two rolls. Everything gets taken, whole bottle of fairy liquid, teabags & coffee, kitchen roll, cling film and foil. Weird but that what happens. If the accommodation is cheap, then the owner won’t be making much out of it, by the times, she pays platform fees, cleaning etc, toilet rolls aren’t cheap these days, no one owning a holiday let will leave a big bag of toilet rolls, as they will vanish, I would guarantee it.

Thats crazy, we've run a holiday let for five years, nothing has ever been stolen, although a Tupperware box was taken by accident once.

Two loos and I leave 3 loo rolls.

Guests arriving today for 11 nights so I'll go and add a few more after reading this.

Scarlettpixie · 18/06/2023 09:11

Air b&b is self catering so I would expect to provide all consumables. A starter roll is reasonable. I would have taken one with me (as well as washing up liquid, soap etc).

cushioncovers · 18/06/2023 09:12

One toilet roll is tight. Two would have been better.

CaloundraBlues · 18/06/2023 09:14

I've never had just one toilet roll provided in S/C accommodation, in fact I've never had to buy any. Very tight

It's so annoying isn't it. Last year 7 of us stayed in a luxurious house in Northumberland. The - half full - washing up bottle had a label on it saying 'do not take from property/do not remove' or similar words. We paid £1100 to stay there for a week, using a local holiday rental company that have a fantastic reputation, and that I've used many times before. It irritated me so much that I'll not use that company again.

In contrast, we've recently been on a road trip in Canada self catering with a mix of direct bookings, small companies, Airbnb and VRBO. Every property was fully stocked with loo roll, soap, full boxes of dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and washing powder. Loads of it. It was so refreshing.

I don't understand the Airbnb being 'cheap and cheerful' comment at all. There's a whole range of properties on the site, many definitely not cheap, and many high end properties. Airbnb is often the most expensive way to self cater, and if a property is advertised across several platforms, then it's almost always cheaper booking elsewhere.

£1100 is not very much for a holiday house for a week. I just paid more than that for a caravan.

In a hotel I’d just ring/visit reception and ask for more. In a hotel context that’s perfectly reasonable after a multi day stay now they don’t service rooms daily - they fully expect you to ask for more toilet roll or coffee sachets or whatever. Air b&b is self catering, I’d expect to bring my own.

Mindymomo · 18/06/2023 09:22

When we started cottage holidays over 30 years ago, we had to take everything. Our first place, slept 10 but only had cutlery for 4, it had bedding but no towels, no frying pan, cork screw. Our first trip out was to Woolworths to get supplies. We do now tend to book luxury cottages, where quite a few things are supplied along with a welcome pack, weirdly though last place we stayed supplied luxury tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and cake, but no sugar. I do get a Tesco delivery for the day after we arrive, but agree toilet rolls are hit and miss. A lot of cottage owners just leave everything to cleaners, I would leave a review saying you were disappointed that there was only 1 toilet roll for 4 people, if they don’t know, they cannot do anything about it.

£1100 is not very much for a holiday house for a week. I just paid more than that for a caravan.

It is for out of season, in the lowest priced time of the year, including a 10% discount for a repeat stay, for a 3 bedroom property.

In any case, it's actually about the principle of being instructed not to steal a half empty bottles of washing up liquid.

TheMrsColumbo · 18/06/2023 09:26

There should be toilet roll IMO. I've never stayed in a rental that didn't provide at least toilet roll and washing up liquid.
Saying that though I've never had to take my own bedding with the exception of cot bedding.

towriteyoumustlive · 18/06/2023 09:26

I'd say whoever has been using a mile of toilet roll to wipe their bum should be the one to go out and fetch some more!

One toilet roll for the weekend should be more than enough for 4 people.

ThePoetsWife · 18/06/2023 09:29

Just got back from an amazing Airbnb stay - plenty of loo rolls, cleaning products, laundry and dishwasher tablets etc as well as towels and sheets.

WonderDays · 18/06/2023 09:29

I don’t think there are any ‘shoulds’ for toilet roll. Periods, wee and shat are messy.

Fandabedodgy · 18/06/2023 09:33

Self catering?

You need to buy that sort of thing yourself.

If you want things like loo roll through your stay you need to go at least B&B
