To wonder if there's a fence equivalent of penguin bollards?

I have the age old issue of the next door neighbours using my front garden as a path as its more convenient for them to walk to the end of their drive before turning onto the street.

They've been asked more than once to stop and didn't, I spoke to the letting agent who manages the property of the owner and while it seemed to stop for a bit the neighbours told me they carried on doing it when I was out. I've installed a ring doorbell, have the evidence to go back to letting agent on Monday but was planning to put a passive aggressive boundary marker like in the photo.

Its quite a small bit of land relatively speaking so big planters etc will be too much but it made me wonder if there was another solution akin to the infamous penguin bollards. I'm feeling pretty petty because I am sick fed up of people who they can do whatever they like and the rest of us just have to put up with it. Will consider anything that will get the message across (while giving the other neighbours, who are all lovely, a chuckle).

Hit me with it, o nest of vipers 😂

Electric fence, like the ones used for horses? The kits are relatively cheap, especially for the amount you need and they can be picked up second hand easily. You possibly wouldn't even need to turn it on 😂

Thanks for the diagram -so beautifully colour-coded! - it makes it much easier to envisage what you're dealing with.

If you don't fancy planting spiky bushes on your grassy strip (brambles and/or raspberries would give you the additional benefit of fruit to pick!) what about a steel cable boundary fence?
(like in these pictures: https://www.cable-fence.com/projects/boundary-fencing/ )

Stainless steel boundary fencing. Corrosion-free, perfect for decking, pergolas, trellising, boundary fencing wires, vineyard wires, wire suspension system.

In answer to your question, isn't gate the fence equivalent of penguin bollards?

3littlebearcubs · 18/06/2023 20:49

Nice drawing OP, it's very clear. Whatever you choose to put up make sure it's not too low as the cheeky neighbour will likely step right over it onto your grass. Good luck, please update us when you put up a barrier, hope it stops cheeky neighbour.

Personally I’d plant a row of runner beans with nice tall stakes as they’re pretty and tasty. Then sweet peas the next year (pretty but NOT tasty!)

if you really don’t want to plant anything then a row of metal poles with rope strung across at heights that would make ducking under or over awkward.

MRex · 18/06/2023 21:09

Rose bushes and some berry brambles would do the trick.

I would save up and install a fence.

SoapyBubblesLittleTroubles · 18/06/2023 21:35

So for the people who are asking, a) its damaging the grass, its wearing a path into already b) I'm not expecting anyone to appear outside my window so its alarming and c) its rude. my property, my decision how I feel about it. There was a day a visitor to their house was cutting across the grass and their phone rang so they stopped to have an argument with someone outside my window!! But most important of all, its my grass within my boundary and I dont want them to. End of.

Two types of people in life, those who respect others and are considerate neighbours and those who are cunts and do what they like. Already know which one you are,@Oysterbabe 😂

My diagram probably makes it seem like 2 short steps but its 4 or 5. They have a path leading to the end of their drive but they cut across their drive and walk down, and then onto my path to get to the pavement

Some years ago an elderly man got done for putting paint filled land mines in his garden. He had a warning sign but still got done for it!!

What about a trip wire?

I have thought about barbed wire also 😂

Ikea have planters with trellis behind - you could put those - large enough that they can’t move them. Decorate them as you want - gnomes, barbed wire, wind chimes, lights shining in their windows

I really think this is what I'm going to do, make it look ridiculous to make my point 😂😂

I don’t see why you can’t get sufficient penguin bollards to create a boundary impenetrable to pedestrians.

Don't tempt me....😁😂

Bear Traps

coodawoodashooda · 18/06/2023 21:39

It would annoy me too. I'd plant a tree.

coodawoodashooda · 18/06/2023 21:42

What about loads of windmills? The £5 type? The whole way up the strip?

SoapyBubblesLittleTroubles · 18/06/2023 21:45

So hard to keep up with all the posts but I am loving all of these ideas, especially the electric fence and the goat!!

I don't want to plant anything purely because I hate gardening. I dont want to put a bigger fence in because of cost, I've just shelled out for a bloody ring doorbell (which has delivered some cracking images of a variety of people, all from the house next door because the postie etc are respectful and don't cut across people's property). Im hoping the threat of getting the landlord directly involved will be enough to get the letting agent to sort it out, I really just want to make my point in visual, possibly because of my (diagnosed) touch of the 'tism 😂😂

Bear Traps

Unfortunately the ring doorbell will capture very clear images which could probably be used against me in a court of law 😂

During the school holidays you can pay a street urchin to sit on your drive armed with a super soaker.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 18/06/2023 21:50

What about a lot of plant pots with fake plants, that way it doesn't matter if your not green fingered

OrchardOfCats · 18/06/2023 21:52

As they are driveways there are regulations as to the height of anything put in front gardens. This is to ensure visibility for drivers and it cannot be over 1m in height. Anything over that needs planning. This is why front gardens have open splays and why front garden walls are so low so that drivers can see anything coming off the drives. Just be aware of that if you put anything tall on the garden.

Personally I would either get one of those motion sensors attached to a hosepipe but it might end up catching a postman or parcel delivery person. For me I would contact the letting agent every single time they did it because there is no doubt a clause in their tenancy agreement about not being a nuisance to the neighbours.

mintbiscuit · 18/06/2023 21:55

Excellent diagram OP and loving the use of the word ‘lovely’ in it to set the neighbourhood vibe.

sorry nothing else to add!

Cakeorchocolate · 18/06/2023 22:01

Motion activated sprinkler if you have access to a tap / hose for it.

Kentmaid · 18/06/2023 22:04

Google or search Amazon for “Motion alarm systems” - someone walks on your property and sets sound going. Dog barking, Alarming sirens. Bells. Might even be able to get one with the old VIZ cry “Git off o moi land!"
