You can take dogs in the park.
So why not a pet snake!

Is it OK to let your snakes sunbathe in the park? - BBC News

(I don't have a snake and am not sure what I would think if I saw a snake in the park)

Is it OK to let your snakes sunbathe in the park?

A man who takes his snakes to his local public park sparks a debate about what animals are acceptable in public spaces.

It’s a park near me, I’d prefer a snake over some of the local population anyday.

Can you call them back by name?

I mean, you can I guess?... I'd be very surprised if they listen! 😄

EllaRaines · 17/06/2023 20:53

Where would it end?

You'd have people wanting to let their Tarantulas have a go on the swings!

Or Ferrets hanging around park benches waiting for someone to sit down so they can run up their trouser leg!

Or what if you cut through the park on your way to work and get stuck behind someone walking their Giant Land Snail?!

Or Ferrets hanging around park benches waiting for someone to sit down so they can run up their trouser leg!

That could be the new ASBO/Dispersal Order for parks 🤔😂

Why not, and if it approaches someone you say 'oh it's just being friendly' as it winds itself around them, no matter whether they like it or not. Works for dog owners.

I've had this conversation so many times! If I rocked up somewhere with my cats then everyone would think I was a weird but dog owners take their pets everywhere.

Let the snake sunbathe! If other people are afraid then can go elsewhere. Just like someone with a dog phobia can go somewhere that isn't dog friendly.

Softoprider · 17/06/2023 22:37

If you see someone with their pet reptile in the park you should move aside and let the Snake Pass...........

Twinklegolden · 17/06/2023 22:49

I walk my dog at this park every day and this guy gives me the major creeps. He looks like a sex offender and sits his snakes right at the car park, where everyone has to walk by and clearly does it for attention. He loves showing the children his snakes and it creeps me out!

Latenightreader · 17/06/2023 23:05

Another one with a snake phobia here. I can’t look at photos, can’t go in the reptile house etc. When a pet snake was reported as escaped in my neighbourhood I couldn’t sleep. If this was my local park I would stop going completely, and probably wouldn’t return because I’d be scared one would have escaped - he doesn’t seem to have them under the best control from the article I read.

PinkButtercups · 17/06/2023 23:19

Nope. Absolutely bloody not. I'd probably cry and pass out.

Those types of snakes are not wild animals here (thankfully) so no he shouldn't be taking them
to the park.

I wouldn't want anyone to even come near me with a snake let alone the thing slithering around on the grass. No thanks.

Misses point of thread but I'm now picturing a snake on a collar and lead and figuring out how it wouldn't slip out of it !

You’re being quite silly……..clearly you’d use a harness instead of a collar and lead 😉😂

ShakeYourFeathers · 17/06/2023 23:29

If the amount of harnesses I've gone through with the dog trying to find the perfect fitting one. Dread to think how many harnesses would be tried on for a snake

MedievalMadness · 18/06/2023 00:15

You know what shape they are, right?. I do, but surely someone could invent and patent a snake-lead. It’s the sort of thing you might see on Dragons Den. I mean no one would invest as there’s probably not sell more than 2, but even so, I bet it’s possible.

CoconutDrunk · 18/06/2023 00:17

surely this isn’t real 😂😂😂

😂😂😂

I was wondering how you’d harness a snake!

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/06/2023 00:23

Maybe you could make a harness out of that stuff you make window crawlers out of so it would sort of stick the the snake without hurting it.

Dragon's Den here I come.

Here we go - snake on a lead

Yeah that wouldn't work. You should see the spaces snakes can sneak though. After a really big meal it might Grin

MedievalMadness · 18/06/2023 00:31

MrsTerryPratchett. So you could maybe put its lead on after a big dinner and head off to the park. And it would probably have loads of energy after a hearty meal and be really up for a nice hike.

TheChosenTwo · 18/06/2023 00:32

There was a guy who lived somewhere nearby us with a giant yellow python, used to see him regularly walking about with the snake round his neck - was never sure where he was going with it! Spoke to him a few times, the first because it caught me by surprise, I’d just not seen him before with the giant snake (and she really was enormous!! the snake was called tiny, he let me stroke her, she was very cool)
anyway, was on the local news that he’d died from asphyxiation 😱 was maybe about 5 years ago now and I often think about him, he said he had loads of exotics but that this snake loved getting out and about.
I guess giant yellow pythons are a bit easier to keep track of in a park than small ones but he said she could get a speed up!

This! And anyone who doesn't like it (eg due to having been bitten by out of control snakes out in public previously) can simply avoid the park or "get some therapy to deal with their problem". Sounds fair to me.

Sidking · 18/06/2023 00:54

A guy used to walk around our local area with his snake around his arm, often saw it in the shop!

As long as it's a pretty chill snake, likes being carried and it's hot I can't see why not. I wouldn't put it down anywhere, but it could hang out over your shoulders in the sun for a bit 🤷

caringcarer · 18/06/2023 00:56

I'm terrified of snakes. I'd freak if I saw a snake in the park. Lots of people are afraid of snakes so I think you are being irresponsible.

musixa · 18/06/2023 01:04

I wouldn't mind a constricting snake being in the park because there'd be plenty of people to pull it off it it started to make a meal of me. I'd object to a venomous snake (where the venom was likely to have life-changing or fatal effects) because it could strike unexpectedly. Ultimately, snakes overall are less dangerous than humans.

CoconutDrunk · 18/06/2023 01:16

can you just confirm an actually snake not a trouser snake, right?

because I have objections to both

LifeIsPainHighness · 18/06/2023 02:26

My friend had a snake and used to take the snake out, my friend would have it round his neck. He actually got approached by the police once. Ridiculous! But the snake was harmless - I’d rather face a snake than a jumpy annoying dog.

You could say the same about dog owners and dogs
