You can take dogs in the park.
So why not a pet snake!

Is it OK to let your snakes sunbathe in the park? - BBC News

(I don't have a snake and am not sure what I would think if I saw a snake in the park)

A man who takes his snakes to his local public park sparks a debate about what animals are acceptable in public spaces.

YABU to have a pet snake. What's the point? They would eat you given half the chance.

My royal python can barely catch and eat his thawed, dead rats. You'd need an entire army of them to eat a human.

CamelCaseLetter · 17/06/2023 21:09

And the human would need to be warmed up to exactly the right temperature, be the right colour and shape, be dangled about in the correct way, and even then might get refused. Royals are notoriously fussy eaters.

sadsack78 · 17/06/2023 21:10

This might be a ridiculous question so bear with me-

If you go on a busy, hot day, would all the people be stressful for the snake?

Other than that I am very curious. How do you keep it from slithering away? Do you have some kind of container it can sit in, or a harness?

And tbh I would rather a snake than some people's kids 😂

Can you call them back by name?

It would end in tears is a bloke lost his pet snake over the park and was walking around asking random women, "Have you seen my snake....?"

Mojitosaremyfavourite · 17/06/2023 21:17

How the fuck anyone can think these are pets is beyond me. Terrifying things .

I would genuinely pass out with fear if I saw one in the park

😬

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 17/06/2023 21:17

EllaRaines · 17/06/2023 20:53

Where would it end?

You'd have people wanting to let their Tarantulas have a go on the swings!

Or Ferrets hanging around park benches waiting for someone to sit down so they can run up their trouser leg!

Or what if you cut through the park on your way to work and get stuck behind someone walking their Giant Land Snail?!

I mean, people do walk ferrets - it's a pretty common sight around here.

They also walk llamas, goats, pigs and cats!

BadNomad · 17/06/2023 21:21

I love the idea of putting a hardness on a snake. 😂

I know someone who used to take her pet rat to the park on the shoulder. This critter was so well-behaved. He only climbed down onto the grass when she told him to and would come back when she made a clicking noise. Very smart animals.

BadNomad · 17/06/2023 21:21

Harness...

Saschka · 17/06/2023 21:23

I was at the local park summer fete today, and we had snakes (local reptile rescue brought them along). Massive ones though, one yellow python and a couple of other big constrictors. No chance of them getting lost!

ginghamstarfish · 17/06/2023 21:28

Why not, and if it approaches someone you say 'oh it's just being friendly' as it winds itself around them, no matter whether they like it or not. Works for dog owners.

Lovely as he sounds, i think ill stick to cats 😆

just keep the danger noodles insecure boxes.

Will do @RagingWoke Grin

Ffs 'in secure boxes' 😂 not insecure.

I would like to know where this park is @coffeecupsandwaxmelts frequents.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 17/06/2023 21:36

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 17/06/2023 20:35

The vast majority of pet snakes have no interest in killing people unless provoked.

But they aren't affectionate, you can't form a bond with a snake so I don't get why anyone would keep one as a pet.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 17/06/2023 21:36

@RagingWoke rural NW - not far from the coast.

The most common sights are ferrets and birds of prey being "walked" (flown while the owners walk), though you do see ponies, cats and goats too. The llamas are because a local lady has three as pets Grin

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 17/06/2023 21:36

@Regholdsworthswaterbed each to their own, I guess?

I don't understand pet birds but lots of people have them 🤷‍♀️

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 17/06/2023 21:38

But, how are you going to ensure your pet is kept under control? Does it has a nice collar and leash, does it has a good recall? It is not that you can whistle for it to come running back is it?

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 17/06/2023 21:41

So would say many dog owners (oh, he is friendly you know? Until they aren’t…

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 17/06/2023 21:50

I wouldn't have a problem with that. Here is one of ours, enjoying the sun yesterday.
Not in a park though, just our garden.

to take my snake to sunbathe in the local park?
TooJoy · 17/06/2023 21:55

YABU I’d assume going to a park would be very stressful for a snake.

I would have no idea if a snake was overheating either whereas a dog is much more obvious.

IronicElf · 17/06/2023 22:03

I'm about to (try) feeding our royal python. He rejected the perfectly acceptable rat on Wednesday.

Have you seen the cost of fresh-frozen rats these days?

I might take him out to the garden next week and let him catch some rays, but I'm worried about the cats. Not that they'll get hurt, but in case they attack poor little Freddy.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 17/06/2023 22:09

I would literally lose my life if I saw a snake in the park. Like literally.
Even reading this page makes me feel nauseous.
I have a completely irrational utter fear of them, the thought literally makes me feel sick.
Please don't.

louderthan · 17/06/2023 22:15

I would have an aneurysm if I saw a snake in the park. I am terrified of them. Dogs are bad enough!

😑😑😑 I feel sick just thinking about it.
