Miscarriage advice

Last week I had a scan on NHS for irregular bleeding and was found to be pregnant. It was a big surprise. There was no heartbeat seen on the scan but the sonographer told me it was a very early pregnancy 5weeks 2 days and it is difficult to see a heartbeat at that stage. After 3 days I started having brown and red spotting. So yesterday I went in to the EPU who said I was 6 weeks 4days but still nothing seen there but only a gestation sac present. Does this mean miscarriage? The doctor said the prognosis is poor and I might miscarry. But the bleeding has now stopped. Next weekend we are planning to fly for holidays so the midwife called me for an early booking appointment on Monday. I'll be exact 7weeks at that time. Should I go to the midwife appointment or should I cancel it and wait for my miscarriage? I'm so confused and emotionally stressed. I still have hope to see something and the doctor at the EPU offered me another scan in a week's time to reassure me but due to my holidays been booked I had to decline it. My scan says early pregnancy seen but no yolk sac or obvious foetus present. Am I even pregnant?. Should I cancel my appointment?. Anyone with similar experience? Advice please?

Contact the midwife and explain the situation.

If you had first scan yesterday and EPU offering appointment in a week can you not have the scan next Friday before you go?

Alternatively, you have a scan on your return from holiday (how long are you away for). Of course there is a risk that you miscarry while you're away so I would suggest preparing for that - you'll need strong painkillers, co-codamol or similar, stronger if you can get it prescribed. Maternity pads and puppy pads for bed would also be sensible to take with you.

Thirdly, this is an upsetting and confusing situationand I'msorry you're going through it - lots of support on the miscarriage/pregnancy loss board.

@Whataretheodds I'll be away for a month. I'm scared what if it happens suddenly on the flight. If until my flight to my native country I do not miscarry I might have a consultation there. Also I do not want to look like a fraud going through the midwife appointment when I know I have chances of a miscarriage. I'm already crying now. I do not want to waste the time of NHS!

Do you have any contact details for the midwife?

thewomaninme · 17/06/2023 14:27

@Whataretheodds I contacted the maternity unit and they have asked me to come in irrespective of the EPU scan as nothing has happened yet. They told me they will book me in and continue as usual until I have a miscarriage or if things turn out in my favour a heartbeat might appear miraculously by week 8.

There you go, that's clear advice. Try to look after yourself.
