To think UK should have moved on from carpeting by this stage

It's gross, it's ugly, it's high maintenance, and in a world of global warming, it increasingly feels like a dust and burning sun heat trap.
Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?

They aren't...

MrsFezziwig · 17/06/2023 00:12

I have no carpets in my house. YABU.

UsingChangeofName · 17/06/2023 00:12

I agree with pp. No-one I've ever met is obsessed with carpeting.

There are pros and cons of both. I much prefer carpets overall, but it is personal taste.

Avondale89 · 17/06/2023 00:12

Because it feels lovely and cosy under my feet in my bedroom in my 150 year old house with shocking Victorian floorboards and poor insulation. I don’t have it downstairs, but I’ll never let go of it in bedrooms.

GottaGirlcrush · 17/06/2023 00:13

Nothing like a bit of an attempt to slag off an entire country ....

Weak effort

Finlesswonder · 17/06/2023 00:13

I just spent 3 nights with a relative who has thick carpeting, massive heavy drapey curtains and fuck loads of cushions all over their sofa and it just felt like a textile overkill as I sat there in their blazing conservatory

mosiacmaker · 17/06/2023 00:14

I agree it feels very dated!

EvilElsa · 17/06/2023 00:15

I love it 🤷‍♀️
Why is it high maintenance? I have a mix of stone, original floorboards and carpet in a 300 year old cottage. The carpet is no harder to look after than the other flooring.

Well then embrace a more pared back, scandi minimalist look in your own home. I personally love textiles and different textures of fabric. Horses for courses.

ginghamstarfish · 17/06/2023 00:16

Agree OP, carpet is very impractical and unhygienic.

Badbudgeter · 17/06/2023 00:16

I live in an old house and nice thick carpets help a lot in winter. Hard floors in kitchen/hall/conservatory and bathrooms though.

Boomboom22 · 17/06/2023 00:17

I assume you wear shoes indoors and live somewhere sandy or muddy. Otherwise I don't get it.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/06/2023 00:18

I completely agree with you. Carpeting is disgusting. It's filthy and toxic. Unless you buy very expensive, non-toxic carpet, it is steeped in horrific chemicals. No flooring is "perfect", but carpeting is awful.

chuggabo · 17/06/2023 00:21

I rent. Its no more my carpet than my ceiling rose. I have the choice to accept the home choices there or not. I'd far rather know that the boiler was recently replaced than faff over carpet or lino. You want to be snobby over surface choices and how supposedly hygienic or not they are, go ahead - I genuinely don't care as I have other concerns.

Finlesswonder · 17/06/2023 00:22

I lived somewhere with carpets once and from a cat hair perspective it was a nightmare!

Flooring snobs..... laminate contains FORMALDEHYDE

Blossomtoes · 17/06/2023 00:23

Our house is 400 years old and draughty. It would be absolutely unbearable in the winter without carpet. We’ve got it everywhere except in the kitchen and bathrooms. I don’t care what other people do in their houses but carpet is here to stay in this one.

A problem solved by a decent vacuum cleaner.

wottf · 17/06/2023 00:27

Most houses I see these days, mine included, only have carpet in the bedrooms - if that!! I have it in my bedroom, and yes it won't be as sterile as my wooden floor but it's certainly not dusty.

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt · 17/06/2023 00:27

I have some carpet, and some laminate, I'm not obsessed with either. It's just flooring.

Carrusa · 17/06/2023 00:28

We're in a heatwave but for much of the last year millions have been rationing their heating and even living in fuel poverty. Carpet feels warmer and holds the heat in better. If you want to minimise energy use it's a great choice. Our house felt much warmer, and we could see the bills drop, when we carpeted over our beautiful but draughty parquet.

Also subfloors in old houses are not always that flat, and hard flooring is really unforgiving of that.

XenoBitch · 17/06/2023 00:29

I love carpet. It is cosy, and my old dog hates any sort of laminate anyway (I do have a bit downstairs).

You sound delightful. Someone puts you up for 3 nights and you just bitch about their taste in decoration..

erlangshen · 17/06/2023 00:32

I totally agree, its disgusting. We have been viewing a lot of properties recently, from older houses to newer ones, including new builds, there is carpet in every single one, some even have it in the toilets! It could look nive when new, but it gets dirty and disgusting soon, and even when it looks clean, it is not! We much perfer solid wooden floor and tiles, but maybe because we are not British. When I spoke to the sales of a new development and asked them if its possible to have hard flooring all over, he said no, only downstairs!
