To think UK should have moved on from carpeting by this stage

It's gross, it's ugly, it's high maintenance, and in a world of global warming, it increasingly feels like a dust and burning sun heat trap.
Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?

OP posts:
HeddaGarbled · 17/06/2023 01:11

Only carpets we own are on the stairs and in ds’s room. We have oak flooring in most other rooms except the back reception and kitchen which are flagstone

What on earth possessed you to post that boast?

I wonder if the OP is an oak and flagstone sort of person or a laminate sort of person who thinks she’s superior to carpet sorts of people? Where does vinyl come in the floor-snob stakes?

greenspaces4peace · 17/06/2023 01:13

different types of flooring have their place and time.
some people like carpet in the bedroom (quiet and warmer when you step out of bed), some like a large area carpet in the living room to help "dampen" the noise.
stone and tiles can be hard on the joints and dangerous for slipping.
i guess that's why you can mix and match to suit your lifestyle.

I just spent 3 nights with a relative who has thick carpeting, massive heavy drapey curtains and fuck loads of cushions all over their sofa and it just felt like a textile overkill as I sat there in their blazing conservatory

How kind of your relative to have you to stay.

SwordToFlamethrower · 17/06/2023 01:17

I have carpeted bedrooms, stairs and landing. They are lush to get up bare footed onto in the mornings. They also assist in sound insulation and feel cozy and homey.

Downstairs is tile bit we have a large rug in the lounge part of the main living room.

Again. Feels luxurious and cozy. I have a Henry hoover and it deals with the cat hair.

This was my first forever home at age 45 after years of housing insecurity. It felt like a rite of passage to choose my own carpets for my home!

midsomermurderess · 17/06/2023 01:27

I think they work well in rooms like bedrooms and sitting rooms, nice and warm under foot in winter, and hard flooring through a property can be quite dusty and noisy.

MyLostSock · 17/06/2023 01:41

I live in a hot, humid country. It does get a little cooler in winter, though. I find the fine wool carpet in my bedrooms and living areas keep things warm in winter and cool in summer. I have wooden floorboards or tile elsewhere. I once had a house that had no carpet at all and I found that too cool and echoing.

Sarahtm35 · 17/06/2023 01:54

I agree I hate carpets. They’re unhygienic and a pain to take care of.
the only reason I have carpets upstairs is because my house came with them and the floor boards are mdf boards not nice wood planks. However next year I’m having wooden flooring put in and washable rugs for comfort.

I lived somewhere with carpets once and from a cat hair perspective it was a nightmare!

A problem solved by a decent vacuum cleaner.

The problem isn't carpet, its the idiotic EU regulations we signed up to....and them enforcing the limiting in wattage power of vacuum cleaners!!
Some of us live in beautiful, victorian draughty houses. Given the price of heating why would we sacrifice a thick, soft insulating carpet underfoot.

Then stay in a hotel.

Have what you want in your own home.

Why are pp carpets rotten?! Do you wear shoes and never clean your carpets? You must either be very grubby or very lazy!

I just had to use all my powers of persuasion to convince my 80yr old df to not carpet his new bathroom. Yes, BATHroom.
I think it’s a generational thing.

I moved into a new build about 15 years ago, and we looked at each others homes to see what they had done
It's a pretty modern apartment, open plan
My neighbour had carpet put down in both the bathrooms and... the kitchen I won't mention the mahogany choices
I mean what do you do if you drop a bottle of milk?! Absolutely not thank you BlushGrin

AlltheFs · 17/06/2023 02:51

I love carpet-we have an old thatched cottage. We have a mix of limestone flags and carpet. The house needs carpet for warmth/draughts. The floors upstairs are completely wonky-I need carpet in one bedroom atm as it is just floorboards and you can’t even keep a drawer open. Plus the noise is awful. No thanks. Carpet going in soon!

I’d rather live in my cosy home than some
hideous box painted greige with LVT or laminate everywhere though. I absolutely detest “modern” homes. Bleugh

Anyone that doesn’t like carpet is welcome
to fuck off and never visit me or the cats though.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/06/2023 02:52

My friend had a house built. Oak flooring throughout and oak doors and woodwork.

The hall just looked bleak. Wood everyeherr

UhhOhhh · 17/06/2023 03:06

Oh that’s a shame. My husband has a carpet design and fitting company. Maybe you should let his global clientele paying 60k+ per square metre that carpet is over! 😂😂

Housenoob · 17/06/2023 03:07

I don't understand why people say carpet is high maintenance compared to hard floors.

With carpet you just hoover, and can get away without doing it daily, particularly in upstairs rooms. Maybe get it prof cleaned once in a blue moon.

With hard floors you have to hoover/sweep, and mop. Daily if not more. Sometimes scrub by hand depending on type. You see every bit of dirt, every hair. We have an ugly grey laminate in the kitchen atm (was there when we moved in), and when the light falls a certain way you can see smudges/marks really easily.

When we eventually redo our flooring in the house I'm doing hard floor everywhere downstairs except the living room, and carpet all upstairs. We debated having hard floors in the living room but tbh it's just cosier with carpet and we worry less about our little ones falling over and seriously hurting themselves.

HOW MUCH?????!

flimsywhimsy · 17/06/2023 03:14

We replaced all our carpet with hard flooring, but if someone else wants or needs carpeting, why would I care?

It would be like someone being annoyed that I have a fabric-covered sofa instead of leather, because leather is easier to clean, doesn't trap smells, etc. There are always pros and cons, and as long as you have the choice to use what you like, who cares what everyone else does?

JandalsAlways · 17/06/2023 03:37

I can't imagine not having carpet in a cold country like the UK!!

It isn't generational. My parents are either side of 80 and have never had carpet in a bathroom. They have it elsewhere though.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 17/06/2023 04:10

Hard flooring + area rugs that can be thoroughly cleaned or replaced is the only way I'd ever choose.

SunIsShininInTheSky · 17/06/2023 04:16

We have carpeted bedrooms and stairs. I didn't want hardfloors in the bedrooms and the stairs would be noisy and potentially slippy without carpet, plus it's a bit of cushioning when you fall down (our children are only little). I am funny about carpets though, I replaced them all when we moved house and will do the same again when we move. The previous owners had dogs which made us strip everything out, even wooden floors. I think carpets and pets is pretty gross though, we have no pets and a strict no outside shoes rule so they are kept clean.

Some of us live in beautiful, victorian draughty houses. Given the price of heating why would we sacrifice a thick, soft insulating carpet underfoot.

Those regulations limited the power USED (and wasted), not the suction or cleaning power. The reason was that people bought vacuum cleaners based on the power used, meaning manufacturers worked to produce as least efficient as possible vacs which meant they were hot and noisy and wasteful.
The technology existed for years to make efficient ones but there was no incentive.

Amore2023 · 17/06/2023 04:23

We have wooden floors and tiles downstairs, carpet in bedrooms (tiles in bathroom - carpet in bathrooms in 70s/80s was awful!)
To me, this combination is the best of both worlds. ☺️
It just needs to be hoovered regularly and we clean the carpets once a year.

MariaVT65 · 17/06/2023 05:10

We have hardwood floors in our living room and i had to get a giant rug in the end as my knees and legs were getting so bruised from constantly being on the hard floor playing with my toddler.

W1h · 17/06/2023 05:18

Hard floors are nice in the, what, max 3 months of hot weather we get in this country. The other 9+ months of the year carpet wins for heat and sound insulation. Carpet wins overall.
