Are people less polite now?

Curious to know people's thoughts.

Are people really less polite now, or has it always been the case?

Examples I notice regularly enough:

  • People not tidying up after having a picnic, party or being at a festival. Just leaving their mess and trash as a complete afterthought.
  • Throwing cigarettes or wrappers out of car windows.
  • Listening to music out loud on public transport or in cars at very loud volumns.
  • Not standing for someone elderly or a pregnant woman on public transport.
  • Not moving out of the way when you cross paths.
  • Allowing children to be loud, rude or interrupt conversations.
  • Owning dogs but not training them well, so they bark constantly or bound up to children or other dogs.

I'm only in my 30s so can't tell if it's me or if the world around me really is changing. I always noticed rude and horrible behaviour when I was in school (which was awful) but not really in the wider world. I guess those kids grew up!

YABU - People have always been this way.
YANBU - People are less polite now.

Should also add, this isn't an age thing. It seems to cut across age.

I know this post is almost 2 weeks old but I Came across it because it was under a thread I had been looking at. I also think that people have become more rude and even notice a difference upto a few years ago. Obviously I can't categorize everyone out there because there are good and bad in all walks of life, but I definitely think since covid people have far less manners or respect for other people

I totally agree with everything you’ve said

Sigmama · 03/09/2023 11:07

Nah, you're just noticing the bad stuff, start looking out for all the good stuff

ToWhitToWhoo · 03/09/2023 11:12

I don't think people overall are ruder than in the past I can remember all your examples from a few decades ago. and the cigarette ones were commoner then.

I do think that people are possibly more extreme now: the considerate ones are more considerate, and the rude ones are ruder.

The dogs one is commoner now, because more people have dogs.

Since COVID people are complete twats

I'm in my mid 50s and I'd say the only things that have really changed from your list is the loud music on public transport (although boom boxes were popular once) and kids being less well behaved in public.

YANBU and the dog thing.. man some dog owners think the sun shines from their dogs 🐕 arse.

I've noticed it too. People not queuing, leaving rubbish everywhere, also same things you noticed. Britain not so great anymore.
