Crater-like wound on my leg turning black - what the hell is this (see pic)

Just as the title suggests! I got bitten last week, have no idea by what but it was itchy and the first day my leg was swollen and quite hard. Well now it’s turned into a small crater-like wound that feels really deep. It looks like a dark brown/black scab on it but I’ve tried lifting it a little and it’s like stuck in my leg, it looks hard but I’m sure it’s not actually a scab. When I tried to lift it (unsuccessfully) the skin around the wound peeled off. I have never had a bite end up like this! Any thoughts on what this is and whether it’s something that’ll heal on its own? Don’t want to bother the GP if it’s nothing!

Excuse the hairy legs and tattoo :D

that is a surprising remark from a GP

I would have dug off the scab and given it a good clean and put a plaster on it. Wouldn't have worried me at all.

Definitely not good advice!!

QuintanaRoo · 15/06/2023 18:25

I agree you should go to a&e or a minor injuries unit at least. Someone needs to see it, if they think you don’t need to be there it’ll take them minutes to look at it and send you away.

MMUmum · 15/06/2023 18:28

Looks infected, that's why you don't feel well.

GlasgowGal82 · 15/06/2023 18:30

Have the people who are saying "this looks like a tick" ever actually seen a tick? I've seen plenty and this looks nothing like one. People need to dial down the tick hysteria on here!

Glad you got it seen OP and the you have antibiotics. I hope that it heals quickly x

Bitworriedtbh · 15/06/2023 18:30

I’ve bitten the bullet and am on the way to A&E, we don’t have a minor injury unit here, the rarest one is an hour ago. I’ll update

Will you PLEASE go to hospital. Cellulitis is terrifying once it gets hold.

Bitworriedtbh · 15/06/2023 18:31

Sorry my words are a bit muddled!

I'm really, really pleased you're going OP.

Even if the Gp's opinion was correct, the treatment he / she suggested doesn't correlate with it.

Definitely important to get it seen in person.

Let us know how you get on!

3luckystars · 15/06/2023 18:33

Good!!!!!!

Ketzele · 15/06/2023 18:37

Good luck OP!

KTheGrey · 15/06/2023 18:44

Good that you're going to A&E. That looks thoroughly nasty.

Good luck.

beckyDamron5 · 15/06/2023 18:44

I think that's the best thing to do

Bitworriedtbh · 15/06/2023 18:46

Yes definitely

Labradoria · 15/06/2023 18:48

I don't think it looks a and e worthy but obviously if it's getting bigger or more inflamed it might need antibiotics.

How you get soon OP and get the treatment and medication you need. Don't forget to mention your other symptoms: pooing bloodclots, cold/flu symptoms, tiredness and anything else you don't think of any importance but which may be serious. 🌹

Newestname002 · 15/06/2023 18:52

"How you get SEEN and treated soon" 🌹

BadNomad · 15/06/2023 18:53

That's definitely a necrotic ulcer. It needs to be swabbed, debrided and antibiotics given. If you are diabetic it will be even more serious.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/06/2023 18:56

I'm relieved( and I don't even know you) you've gone Necrotic tissue is dead and needs to be debrided before it spreads
If you are diabetic this is even more serious as this is what leads to gangrene
