Crater-like wound on my leg turning black - what the hell is this (see pic)

Just as the title suggests! I got bitten last week, have no idea by what but it was itchy and the first day my leg was swollen and quite hard. Well now it’s turned into a small crater-like wound that feels really deep. It looks like a dark brown/black scab on it but I’ve tried lifting it a little and it’s like stuck in my leg, it looks hard but I’m sure it’s not actually a scab. When I tried to lift it (unsuccessfully) the skin around the wound peeled off. I have never had a bite end up like this! Any thoughts on what this is and whether it’s something that’ll heal on its own? Don’t want to bother the GP if it’s nothing!

Excuse the hairy legs and tattoo :D

If any of that black shading is NOT your tattoo then go to A&E tonight!

Ilovetea42 · 14/06/2023 23:22

If you're having symptoms of sepsis (warm fluey tired etc) then you should go straight to a and e or at least call your out of hours gp.

AnotherBookDone · 14/06/2023 23:22

😂 Prople are mistaking the tattoo as black dead flesh.

AnotherBookDone · 14/06/2023 23:24

I would get it looked at though OP. I think it is a tick and needs removing.

maidmarianne · 14/06/2023 23:24

Oh, I had a bite like this last year. An enormous crater of a bite. I had antibiotics but it didn't clear up until I got antibiotic ointment for it. It took weeks to fully heal up. I still have no idea what caused it.
I can't believe you haven't been to the gp with this!

Well the title does say her leg is turning black, which makes thoughts head towards gangrene.

QueenofLouisiana · 14/06/2023 23:25

I’m with @ChannelyourinnerElsa on that. If the skin is hot, hard, discoloured and you are feeling unwell you need help asap.
I had a spider bite develop into cellulitis and needed a long course of very strong antibiotics, tasted like something had died in my mouth for weeks as a side effect. But definitely saved my flesh- I’d ignored it until a guy I knew showed me the huge chunk of his leg which was missing from a similar bite. (Both bites were in the UK)

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 14/06/2023 23:26

Looks like a spider bite to me, possibly going necrotic, Id see a doctor.

KingsHeath53 · 14/06/2023 23:27

Google ‘black insect bite’. Results aren’t good! Go to the doctor! Call 111! Not mumsnet!

NerrSnerr · 14/06/2023 23:27

Is all of the black around it a tattoo?

If any of that black is due to the wound then you'll need to see someone tonight.

If it's not I'd still call out of hours and see if they want to see you.

Marmalade71 · 14/06/2023 23:28

The tattoo is causing confusion but the bottom line is if any of the grey / black skin colour is not tattoo get to A&E!

Bitworriedtbh · 14/06/2023 23:28

I think this image is a bit clearer

I would go to A and E to rule out sepsis or ticks. Our neighbour had a tick and now lives with lyme disease. Awful.

goingslightlyinsane · 14/06/2023 23:31

OP ,It could be wrong but this looks like a spider bite to me. I'm speaking from experience.
I had a very similar thing on my forehead- I left it a few days thinking it was just a bite then it started weeping, starting feeling hot and unwell. Went to show the pharmacist and they told me to get to the Dr straight away.

It turned out to be a spider bite that was infected, it made me feel very unwell and I still have the scar on my head two years later.

endofthelinefinally · 14/06/2023 23:32

That looks like a tick to me and the flu like symptoms are worrying. Call 111 in the first instance OP.

goingslightlyinsane · 14/06/2023 23:32

Just seen your latest picture. Mine looked exactly like this. You need antibiotics and you really need to see someone.

Beamur · 14/06/2023 23:33

I'd guess spider bite. They can be surprisingly nasty.
DH had one a couple of years ago that took ages to clear up and was very inflamed.

alexdgr8 · 14/06/2023 23:33

go to A & E. now.
or at the very least ring 111. now.
you must not delay any longer. seek medical advice now.
and tell them all the symptoms.
let us know how you get on.
good luck.

Germolenequeen · 14/06/2023 23:34

My first thought was spider bite - as pp have said get it looked at ASAP 😕

Pollydollydoodle · 14/06/2023 23:35

OP have you got someone who can take you to out of hours tonight? Px

sykadelic · 14/06/2023 23:35

Not a doctor but imo totally a spider bite. Given you're feeling unwell better safe than sorry!

goingslightlyinsane · 14/06/2023 23:36

Please get it seen to right now.

Tryingtogetonwithit · 14/06/2023 23:37

No expert but would say a horsefly bite, does look like it needs antibiotics ASAP. Any bite that spread or discolours needs medically assessed.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/06/2023 23:37

Another one saying to get it checked
As you're feeling unwell it could be cellulitis

continentallentil · 14/06/2023 23:38

Get it seen first thing - ring your GP first - they might prescribe anti-biotics from the photo but failing that will tell you where the nearest walk in is.

If it’s hot and hard you have some infection, and that needs to be taken seriously as it can lead to sepsis. The fact you aren’t feeling might indicate in infection is going to escalate (might not of course.)

So attend to it first thing OP
