Crater-like wound on my leg turning black - what the hell is this (see pic)

Just as the title suggests! I got bitten last week, have no idea by what but it was itchy and the first day my leg was swollen and quite hard. Well now it’s turned into a small crater-like wound that feels really deep. It looks like a dark brown/black scab on it but I’ve tried lifting it a little and it’s like stuck in my leg, it looks hard but I’m sure it’s not actually a scab. When I tried to lift it (unsuccessfully) the skin around the wound peeled off. I have never had a bite end up like this! Any thoughts on what this is and whether it’s something that’ll heal on its own? Don’t want to bother the GP if it’s nothing!

Excuse the hairy legs and tattoo :D

Sorry was writing an update! I went to the autism assessment and my son was officially diagnosed which is such a relief as it’s been two years of the unknown (well, we knew).

i called the doctors and the receptionist asked me to send in photos which I have. This was half an hour ago as we only just got home. Currently waiting on a phone call back.

i unfortunately missed the 111 call backs as they were at 4am and I was asleep

That's great news about your DS (well great in that hopefully you'll get the help you need....I remember feeling very relieved when dd got her 'official' diagnosis).

Your leg on the other hand, urgh, that defo needs a nurse practitioner or medic to take a looksee!
I'm going for an arachnid bite myself, and sporners corner would love those photos!
Hope you get some answers soon.

You need to go to doctor asap. One of my clients got bit by a spider one night and she ended up with a huge hold that needed packed. It’s going to get worse if you don’t get medically treated.

Feelingcrazy123 · 15/06/2023 15:10

With this and symptoms you’ve mentioned you need to go to m A&E NOW. Not later or tomorrow.

SocialLite · 15/06/2023 15:15

It actually looks exactly like a wound I've had on my arm, it scabbed exactly the same way.

BigCheekBitch · 15/06/2023 15:20

Glad you finally have your son's diagnosis, long bloody wait Flowers

Miri13 · 15/06/2023 15:21

That is not normal, get to a doctor or A&E as soon as possible.

wendyjoy · 15/06/2023 15:43

A&E immediately. Gosh don't ask people on here or even Google.. that is serious.

Floralnomad · 15/06/2023 15:50

I’d just pop to minor injuries rather than waiting on the GP .

Bitworriedtbh · 15/06/2023 16:11

So I spoke to the doctor and he has said it’s an infected ulcer that’s gone necrotic (is that the word?) he’s given me antibiotics, booked me in for bloods for diabetes on 21st (lots of signs I have it and previous gestational diabetes) and said if it gets any worse go to A&E or call him back

Doesn't look like a tick from the pics.
Don't read below if squeamish ........

If you look at it under a magnifying glass a tick that's embedded will be waving its legs about giving no doubt you have something alive in there.

Glad you have some meds. I hope you're on the mend soon.

Also great news.on securing the diagnosis for your son..

QuintanaRoo · 15/06/2023 16:27

Did he do a finger prick/instant blood test on you to check your blood sugar levels? Especially as you’ve been feeling unwell?

Yeeesh Bear Could not find an appropriate emoji!

Hope it heals well!

Floralnomad · 15/06/2023 16:31

If it’s necrosis then it needs debriding , it won’t just heal it’s already dead .

That’s what I thought. If you have a minor injuries I’d call them.

If your trust has a leg ulcer clinic or a tissue Viability nurse/service ask your GP to refer you to them, likely you will need compression stockings or bandage to heel and that's always best to start asap once leg ulcer discovered.

frogssnailandpuppydogtails · 15/06/2023 16:45

Glad you got the help you needed op 👍🏻.

Don’t wait for the blood tests - get yourself a blood glucose monitor from Amazon and check your blood sugar yourself - before you eat, and at least 90 minutes after eating. It sounds as though this is a diabetic ulcer, and tight blood sugar control is essential as elevated blood sugar levels interfere significantly with the healing process. Blood glucose levels before eating should be between 4.0 and 5.9 and at least 90 minutes after meals, should be under 7.8. If the readings are higher than 7.8 it indicates type 2 diabetes. If you have significantly high readings limit your sugar and carb intake and concentrate on lean protein and fresh fruit/veg. When you eat carbs and don’t use the energy they produce, they are stored in the body as sugars and will elevate your glucose levels.

Hopefully the antibiotics will help, but if you know you’re not allergic or sensitive to Iodine, there is a product called Inadine - also available on Amazon, which is basically a woven fabric impregnated with Iodine and it’s widely used successfully in the treatment of leg ulcers. Cut the fabric to fit over the ulcer without touching healthy skin, and then apply a dry adhesive dressing over the top. It’s a myth that you should leave wounds like this open to the air. They do better in a moist antibacterial environment, which Inadine will provide along with a dressing covering.

i would recommend you have an instant blood sugar test asap, I think chemists might do it.

OhmygodDont · 15/06/2023 17:05

My mum had something like that during lockdown but on her neck (hi mum 👋) and the doctors fobbed her off to long she looked like she had a zombie bite on her neck I swear it was gross it had got necrotic and starting ozzing and gross. She had three rounds of antibiotics and had to go for daily cleaning and packing because they left it so long 🤢

Bitworriedtbh · 15/06/2023 17:05

I totally forgot to mention the rectal bleeding to him because I was talking so much, I called back and they said he has no time to triage me again and doesn’t think the two are related and to go to the hospital if it’s ongoing. Just weird how they both started at the same time.

The wound only hurts if I touch it but my leg is tingling a lot.

wanting to add a photo to this thread but it won’t let me

Went to get my antibiotics and the pharmacy is closed 😥

I don’t think antibiotics can bring dead ( necrotic) tissue back to life.
