My first parking thread in 15 years of MN 😮.

Arrived at work this morning. Car park (used by work and public) totally full apart from one space. Driver to left of the free space had parked over the right hand space but there was still room for me to safely park.

No other parking nearby (permits required etc).

No parking space to their left so plenty of room for them to have parked correctly and they can't have parked like they did in response to someone having done the same on their left iyswim.

I have parked normally in the free space but this does not leave the other driver sufficient space to get in on the driver's side. Loads of space on the left side to get in to climb across. No blue badge or anything to suggest this might be an issue. No baby/child seats in car.

Diagram attached.

You're parked correctly. This is not a "you" problem.

BigFatLiar · 14/06/2023 09:34

You're properly parked, no issue here. Make a note of the other car in case he/she causes damage trying to get in

HurdyGurdy19 · 14/06/2023 09:35

You've parked correctly, but keep fingers crossed that a-hole doesn't return before you and bash his driver's door into your car and cause damage.

2ndtimemum2 · 14/06/2023 09:36

I would've done exactly the same thing! Out of curiosity was the ahole car something expensive? I've seen ahole drivers do this to stop other cars parking near their precious vehicle 😤

Exactly this. I’d have taken a photo of my left hand side of my car and noted the other cars reg in case of bumps and scratches when you get back

BruceAndNosh · 14/06/2023 09:38

You are correctly parked.
Agree that it's a good idea to document state of your car before shite Parker returns

I take a photo in this situation

Friend's dad used to do this when he had a brand new sports car as the parking fines were no issue. Could just be crap parker though!

If it's an old car be warned driver might have no problem denting their door trying to get in even if it damages yours.

NextTimeItsOver · 14/06/2023 09:41

Loads of space on the left side to get in to climb across

There might not have been when they parked there though?

I think you are a little unreasonable but I'd have probably done the same if there was no other parking.

Fumbalina · 14/06/2023 09:41

It's a fairly posh car (to me at least!), a newish Audi.

Have made note of the reg and taken a pic of my left side.

We have CCTV on the car park as well I believe.

Read my post again. There is no parking space to their left. It's the last space in the row. Probably slightly larger than all the other spaces and just a kerb to their left.

Zero reason/excuse whatsoever for them to have parked like this.

Zooeyzo · 14/06/2023 10:15

I would only park that close if the car was a lot more expensive than mine! Otherwise they might not be careful coming out.
If there's no more space they are being unreasonable to complain but I'm betting they will.

JauntyJinty · 14/06/2023 10:19

I did this once in a supermarket Park and when I came out the other driver was just pulling out

They opened their window and said "Nice Parking! I had to climb over my car"

I said "Thanks, I use the while lines a guide"

Was quite proud of myself TBH

KarmaStar · 14/06/2023 10:23

Depends if reversed in op,if so and driver is alone he or she or they won't have to open the door nearest to your car, there's always one who parks like that isn't there?😃

Survey99 · 14/06/2023 10:31

I would have parked in the space but to the right a bit so i could get out and they could perhaps get in.

Obviously they misjudged the space or been in a hurry. I wouldnt call someone an arsehole when it might just be a genuine overnight. Life is too short to get that irate over little things, especially in this heat.

Yes this winds me up. A big Porsche suv was parked taking up two whole spaces in the supermarket last week, clearly so that no one could park near the precious car. My immediate thought was 'that's just asking to be scratched'. Which obviously I wouldn't do but still. It's so selfish.

Catspyjamas17 · 14/06/2023 10:35

YANBU, though I might have tried to give them a bit more space, if there was room to do so. Some spaces are so tight that you can't, though. I was parked correctly the other day in my small car and a big van left about a two inch gap to my car on the driver's side. Dick. It was at the gym too and the last thing I needed was another workout climbing across the seats, nearly splinched myself.

Awesome. I can never think of the thing I need to say until long after I needed to say it.

I was going to say I bet it's a "nice" car! Entitled arsehole that doesn't want anyone to damage their car so they use 2 parking spaces.

The good news is, they're unlikely to deliberately damage your car opening the door, as it will damage theirs also. Bad news is, they could damage it in other ways (with a key or bag), so I'd definitely double check you can access the CCTV footage if you need to.

I would, however, have done exactly the same in your scenario, other than making sure there wasn't even enough room to walk between the cars to avoid a potential keying situation!

Do keep us updated!

EsmeSusanOgg · 14/06/2023 12:48

When you confirmed it was an Audi... I was not surprised. Some people with more expensive cars park like this so others cannot park next to them easily. Utterly selfish.

OP YANBU.

Fumbalina · 14/06/2023 18:34

Thoroughly unexciting update:

Left work and the car was gone. Another car was parked (properly) in the space.

No damage to my vehicle.

Presume they had to clamber over as there was definitely not enough room on the driver's side . The inconvenience might make them a better parker in future, we can only hope!

Damn

i was hoping for days of amusement.

LookItsMeAgain · 15/06/2023 10:11

Bit anti-climactic.

Anyway, in my experience, the bigger the car or the more expensive the car, the worse the parking of said vehicle becomes.

It could be because the owners don't want anyone to park close to their precious vehicle or it could be because the owner doesn't actually have the skillset to park said vehicle within the lines, even with the added gadgets and gizmos on their car that means it could probably park itself (based on the make/model described).

Another thing is that cars have become wider over the years and I don't think parking spaces have increased in line with that.

I was hoping for some sort of follow up where the Audi driver had complained to the OP about their parking and then a battle of wits ensued. Ah well...time to move on.
