I checked there was no other thread before I posted this one. Alfie, 9, killed by mum and her bf. Drowned. A catalogue of abuse and many phone calls to police/ss by neighbours. The neighbours often fed him too. We HAVE to find people accountable in this case. It was reported. People knew. Nothing was done. Absolutely nothing. Its harrowing. I feel like I failed him. And I'm hundreds of miles away.

Resurrecting this as it’s on news and first time I’ve read about it, the authorities come across as absolutely fucking pathetic. The old ‘clever parents fooled us’ bullshit- how stupid are you?! The neighbours are telling you they’re trying to drown him and NOTHING IS DONE! Horrifying, they were clearly too scared of this man to bother

Train as a SW. Everyone thinks the job is easy so do it. It's easy, well-paid, well-resourced, not too many cases and you wouldn't be scared or fooled or traumatised.

Go do it. I understand there's a shortage because SWs keep burning out and leaving (weak, pathetic people).

40% of social workers don’t make it to 5 years post qualification - which has implications throughout the profession. But if it’s so easy, please train and have a go, we need good people.

When they said the boyfriend shouldn't stay overnight how can you check on that? They didn't but what was the plan there?
If your going to say this better to have had the child taken away.
They didn't check and how can you anyway?
There was also drug dealing going on there.
I believe there were other children but assume They were taken into care.
Poor Alfies natural father was violent too.
He hasn't said anything
Whys everyone hot to be violent?

aveline161 · 26/01/2024 16:27

I was thinking more of the police in this case

ZoeCM · 26/01/2024 17:07

When I saw the headline about poor Alfie, I knew a step-parent would be involved before I even opened the article. How many more times does this have to happen before people start to realise the dangers of bringing a step-parent into their children's lives?

Today we learn that more than 60 phone calls were made by neighbours, relatives and other people concerned about what was happening to this poor little boy. But hey lessons will be learned so that's ok then...

Absolutely horrifying that so many calls were made to police and social services yet this poor boy was still not safe.

CoffeeAndMinstrels · 26/01/2024 17:36

I seen a situation similar to this child. A mother of 3 young children who is not allowed to have her boyfriend at the house as he’s being investigated for assaulting the mother’s 5 year old boy. Mum finally had the children removed by SS when SS came to check on them and the boyfriend was hiding in the bedroom. Mum constantly lied and had him stay. Another case of a mother putting their own fuck buddy ahead of their own babies.

I hope they get what's coming to them in prison. Evil bastards. We should be ashamed as a country. Funny you never hear social services reform as a politician pledge do you, it's all stop the boats.

Willmafrockfit · 26/01/2024 20:33

case near me all 3 children now safely adopted, hallelujah

girlfriend44 · 26/01/2024 20:38

There's always other children in the family yet they pick on one. I presume the other children were adopted safety.

Just what was the point in this female creature having children?

Why do they do it? So cowardly doing this to an innocent child?

porridgeisbae · 28/01/2024 23:04

I just read this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hereford-worcester-68094466

SS/police were doing things like not even bothering to see him and check he was ok, just taking the abusers' word that he was fine :(

My mum worked in social work so I'm not massively anti-SS, but there were clearly failures here.

I think this is unfair. I know MN hates stepparents but this is a man who had been in prison for 22 years of his life before this happened. This isn't a stepparent problem, this is a violent man problem, a negligent mum problem, and a police not doing enough problem.

It's absolutely a violent man problem. I was brought up by a stepdad who was and is amazing. Always treated us as his own children.
