To ask how much your owe on your mortgage and your age?

Recently remortgaged and the massive rate rise got us thinking. Made me wonder - what is the average people owe? Yes it depends on area/value/when bought etc. But to make it simple I'd be interested in
A) how much owed
B) your age

I'll go first! We owe £115k and I'm 31.

I'm 42. Paid it off (by myself) one month before I turned 40.

EffortlessDesmond · 16/06/2023 20:58

So you are never stuck with an account that's still paying the paltry interest it was six years ago.

Butchyrestingface · 16/06/2023 20:59

Paid off at 38.

EffortlessDesmond · 16/06/2023 21:09

So, on the basis of this thread, where many/most people are confident about their ability to manage their mortgages, and a sizeable percentage can see the end of theirs by their mid-40s, barring catastrophic events, are we to conclude that we are all clever or lucky? I was told, 20 years ago at about 45, that a family can manage a mortgage on a proper home, plus either pension savings or school fees, but that that was an individual choice. Save, or invest in your children's futures? FWIW, we have tried to do both, possibly doing neither well.

Zero
Now 55 but paid mortgage in full 2 years ago

Harmonypus · 17/06/2023 04:47

I will add that I didn't start my mortgage until I was 33, and it was meant to be a 28yr term, so I (on my own) managed to chop 8yrs off it, including having been medically unable to work, so on benefits, for half of the 20yrs I was paying the mortgage

Borracha · 17/06/2023 05:04

Not in the UK, but in GBP would be around 650,000.

We are 37 and 42.

19 years left on mortgage term.

1984Winston · 17/06/2023 05:51

AliceMay55 · 17/06/2023 07:16

Highly likely if Labour win next election. Interest rates may seem high now but nothing like the 70's when mortgage rates were around 15% under the last true Labour Gov. (Blair doesn't really count because he didn't implement proper left wing Labour policies)

Ah … here we go. Even though we’ve had years of slimy, cheating, lying tories, nothing can be as bad as a Labour government 😳

RachaelN · 17/06/2023 18:01

84k
33 and 38
Only bought six months ago and house was 95k.
Remote area in Scotland.
Fully renovating and then selling for profit to buy in the country side.

Bryonny84 · 17/06/2023 18:25

Paid off mortgage 5 years ago at age 55.

putthatdownsteve · 17/06/2023 18:27

150k, 43.

We only bought a place for the first time two years ago. Only one wage of 38k coming in so it feels enormous.

Pussywilloww · 12/02/2024 18:50

Hi!

Really to keep myself accountable, we have been trying hard to get the capital down (whilst everything else has gone up!) Still 31 and now at just over 108k. It would be amazing to go below 100k this year but that's a big ask.

OP posts:
Mumof2NDers · 12/02/2024 18:54

£46k
52 and 59
Would’ve been paid off 5 years ago if I hadn’t been a tit when I was younger and kept remortgaging for no good reason!!
It’s my biggest regret in life!

8misskitty8 · 12/02/2024 18:58

120k and 18 years left. Mid 40’s.

savethatkitty · 12/02/2024 19:00

Yemelade · 12/02/2024 19:18

30 and 33, 53k left. Purchased a cesspit pre COVID for 65k, it's now worth a lot more but plan to move and upsize this year!

Lighteningstrikes · 12/02/2024 19:20

You’re doing great OP.

we have about 600k left, I’m 40. That’s about 60% LTV.

hothotheatbag · 12/02/2024 20:10

£470k and 49

Kougarchew · 12/02/2024 21:57

Am amazed that some people have paid theirs off at say 38 years of age !
just how ?
i didn’t qualify in my profession until i was 22 - no way could a mortgage be paid of at before or around 40. Amazing .

crapatmaths · 12/02/2024 22:11

£14k left. Age 52. Should have paid off years ago but had interest only mortgage for first 18 years when we should have switched for repayment mortgage much earlier. Went to the pub a lot instead!

MsCactus · 12/02/2024 22:11

I am 32, have a 400k mortgage, about to up it to £700k 😳

HOWEVER we will have 300k equity in the new house, which I think is quite good.
