To buy a car

We; DW, DS and I live abroad and we will be coming back to UK for the first time in over 3 years the holiday will be about six weeks. I suggested that we should buy a car and then sell it at the end. Even if we can’t sell it easily I could leave it with my Dad to sell or SORN, now that COVID is over we’re going to be visiting more often so it might be handy. Or there’s always WBAC type places.

to rent a decent sized car will cost about £4k-5k. We should be able to get something decent for that including insurance, anyway if we sell it we will get most of it back

anyway it’s not really that bad an idea is it? I just suggested it and DW got quite annoyed with me.

Sounds like a good plan - Insurance is the likely killer.

Without a permanent UK address the insurance will be far more expensive and many providers will decline cover, so I’d get some quotes and make sure that your £4/5k budget to include that is realistic. If it takes your car-buying budget down to under £3k (which is likely), you have to consider the likelihood of getting a reliable car for that, or one which is more likely to be of an age where it’s going to be a money pit to own or difficult to sell on.

You’ll not get much car for £4-£5K here at the moment
