TRANSNASAL GASTROSCOPY anyone?

If you have had a Transnasal gastroscopy, which is a test to look at the oesophagus and stomach with the scope being passed through the nose, I would be grateful if you could post or pm me to share how it went for you. I am reposting, as the more replies and reassurance I can get, the more it will ease my anxiety about this procedure. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I’ve had it done. I was told I could have sedation in which case I’d need someone with me, or no sedation if I went by myself. I chose no sedation. It was unpleasant up to the point it passed down into my oesophagus, but then fine. It wasn’t painful at all, just weird. I think it took about 10 minutes.

Yes had one two years ago - much better than going via mouth. Throat was numbed and I had to swallow at some point. Was aware of something at back of throat but no gagging reflex and I have a very strong gagging reflex. No sedation. Procedure took about 7 minutes.

@ElinoristhenewEnid hi is the tube/ endoscopy a lot thinner when they do it via the nose in comparison to the mouth ? Also did it cause any damage to your nose is there any chance of that happening ? I’m scared it might break my nose not to sound unreasonable but I have really small nostrils so thought I would ask about your experience haha .

I had to have one up nose and down throat for 24 hours, and go home and eat normally with a pack attached to me to record pH levels. This was much easier than a tube down the throat.

I found the nasogastric tube fine - they had trouble getting through my nasal tube but once I had swallowed and it was down the oesophagus I was not really aware of it - could feel it a bit at back of throat but throat was numb. I assume the tube was thinner but I have never had one via mouth so nothing to compare.

I've had it done twice, both times without sedation.

I have a strong gag reflex and was distraught about the idea of having a tube down my throat. To the extent that I was prepared to refuse the investigation.
The consultant was so understanding with this middle aged tearful wreak, and in the end I had one consultant doing yhe procedure and one holding my hand & reassuring me.

It's OK. You can talk while it's happening.
They do puff air in to enable them to see so you are likely to burp up air, but they expect that.

They put numbing spray in my nose. A bit uncomfortable but nothing too bad. Didn’t feel pain or anything.

watermelonsugarmum · 31/05/2024 16:45

@AlisonDonut hey what was the PH test investigating ? Was it acid production ? I have horrible gurgling noises coming from my stomach all the time 24/7 sounds a bit like bubble wrap and know what’s causing it .

watermelonsugarmum · 31/05/2024 16:48

@StripeyDeckchair Hi so you didn’t opt for sedadation or did you ? Did you go for the numbing spray or gas ? Also was it painful and did they take biopsies could you feel any pain or was it just uncomfortable. You mentioned you have a bad gag reflex same here so did you opt for the endoscopy via nose or was it done through the mouth ? How did you hold up ?
