Flats with dresses

I've read a lot of threads on shoes and dresses. Are flats with a dress frumpy... am struggling. I could wear sandals but my feet and toes are not my best feature though I am working on them. Trainers or canvas pumps are so hot . Office v warm. Help!

Not at all. I don't know anyone who wears heels any more. Most people wear trainers with their dresses if casual.

SophieStew · 11/06/2023 21:05

I can’t remember the last time I wore heels.

They are pretty old fashioned now I think. DD is 26, works in fashion in London, wouldn’t be seen dead in them.

Nothing wrong with flats.

Ceci03 · 11/06/2023 21:06

Like ballet flats are they frumpy for fat 53 year old . Saw these but not sure now.

I generally wear flats because I'm pretty tall. And my husband was only a couple of inches taller than me so wearing a heel made me taller than him and I didn't like it. I don't think it looks frumpy at all there are plenty of cute flats out there.

Withnailandeye · 11/06/2023 21:09

Go to a shoe shop and try some on with the type of dresses you are wearing them with?

it will depend what sort of office job you have I think as to how smart you need to be. I always think my legs look shit in flats so I will always wear heels with dresses. I buy heeled brogues from dune and they do wear well and are comfortable.

bridgetreilly · 11/06/2023 21:14

I only wear flats. Don’t care what other people think, but actually quite often get compliments because I choose such cute ones.

Barleymilk · 11/06/2023 21:20

I had this problem this morning. Put on a long flowery dress and must have tried five pairs of sandles, ballet slip ons,my white trainers ( but having size 9 feet made them look like boats) and even my old crocs I wear in the garden. I was only going to Aldi!
Finally spotted a pair of navy suede Chelsea boots( I think this is what they are?! From M&S two years ago) . And wow,it really made the outfit! I felt great. Though rather sweaty when I got home in the heat!

SmurfetteSalad · 11/06/2023 21:29

Birkenstocks!

Tilllly · 11/06/2023 21:33

Birkenstocks do work, yes

I wear converse, clarks ballet pumps and heels

And I wear a lot of dresses!

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 21:38

I wear fake converse from Sainsbury. £10 they last all summer and are very comfortable. I'm late 50s, size 7 feet and feel pretty alright in them.

SaltyCrisps · 11/06/2023 21:43

Wear whatever you like! I'm very happy to be able to say that I've never worn any heel taller than about an inch, and that was a very long time ago. On the odd occasion that I wear a dress I certainly wear flats with it.

steff13 · 12/06/2023 00:05

My go-to flats are a pair of black Tieks. I've had them about 5 years and they're still just as comfortable as they were when I bought them. But I wear sandals in the summer.

Catsmere · 12/06/2023 04:59

Why should you cripple your feet because someone (advertisers?) has given you the idea it’s “frumpy” to wear flats with dresses? I’m 60 and have never worn heels with anything, too damn painful. My summer shoes are Merrell Barrado (no sandals for me, they give me blisters, plus these days I have orthotics).

The shoes you linked look perfectly nice, btw.

Had to look up Pavers, I don’t think they’re sold here - first page has some nice looking shoes and boots. Which style did you choose?

Ceci03 · 12/06/2023 11:31

I ordered these

But was considering these. What do you all think are these v old lady or are they ok. I'm getting to that age where I can't tell. I'm tempted by comfort but don't want to be a frump either !!

I think flats work well with midi and maxi lengths. Flats with a knee length dress can veer into frumpy territory.

Catsmere · 12/06/2023 23:07

I don’t think any of those styles are remotely “old lady” - I live in a retirement village and I can tell you I don’t see them here!

Alvinne · 12/06/2023 23:30

The ones on the left with the flower are a little twee/frumpy in all honesty.

I really like the ones on the right, but have a feeling they'd be sweaty as you can't wear a shoe liner with them.

LordSalem · 13/06/2023 00:32

Flatforms!

SocksAndTheCity · 13/06/2023 00:39

What specifically does a 'frump' look like? Apart from female obviously, since it's not a word I've ever heard used to describe a man.

Excellent point, and why is it bad? Why is dressing comfortably bad? It all goes back to the “you must attempt to look like a sex object at all times” thing, doesn’t it - not to mention that aging is THE crime for women.

bridgetreilly · 13/06/2023 17:19

Whereas I would say those on the right are a bit frumpier.

Just wear what you like, what you feel good in, what makes you happy.
