not sure i want to be told if I'm being unreasonable or not over this to be honest (I thoroughly suspect I am).

I was home alone earlie - went into the kitchen to get a drink and driveway was empty, then when I turned to leave there was a man standing by the window. He hadn't knocked (we have 3 not-stranger-friendly dogs, so I'd have definitely known if he did). I went to the door and asked if I could help him. He pointed to the compressor on the driveway and said something, I didn't catch it so said 'sorry?'
'Would you be interested in trading this?'
'No.'

Then he turned and walked off. I didn't see a car, but he wasn't a local/resident, though it's possible it was parked down the road behind another. It felt like a really odd exchange - probably a totally innocuous explanation behind it, but it felt really weird. Incidentally, the compressor isn't mine, it's my dad's, and I'm totally paranoid now I'll look outside to it having been stolen. No one else in the household knows anything about the guy, so it wasn't something they'd arranged and neglected to tell me.

Get it moved asap as it will be gone in the next few hours

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/06/2023 18:14

Definitely get it moved!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 10/06/2023 18:15

Report to 101, sounds like he was seeing if anyone was home and came up with an excuse when you opened the door.
And get something to obscure the window.

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 10/06/2023 18:17

If you hadn't gone to the kitchen and seem him you'd most likely have looked out later and the compressor wouldn't be there. Sounds like a chancer. I'd get the compressor moved asap.

stbrandonsboat · 10/06/2023 18:20

He'll be back with a van in the small hours

Hollyppp · 10/06/2023 18:51

He’s scoping you out

Muncha · 10/06/2023 18:54

Yep. Move it asap and make the dog's presence known too

doitwithlove · 10/06/2023 18:59

In circumstances like this, I would have taken a photo of the man.

Hope he does not return later 😬

Don't do this, he might steal the dogs.

We can't leave anything outside our house, it gets taken. Lawnmower, shredder, box of cups... on the drive, not the pavement.

There is at least one man with a van who comes and picks up stuff left on the pavement, as far as I know he doesn't take stuff from drives.

I did have some men knock the door once to ask if I wanted my old cooker taken away, it was by the house. They could have taken it without a word.

Surprised your dogs didn’t bark to alert you he was there.
