Car scam advice

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 17:25

We’ve sold a vehicle today. Buyers haggled down….lots of pressure. Paid a chunk in cash and paid some through transfer. Initially said the wrong amount of cash and them transferred more after we counted it. They pushed to leave quickly so we couldn’t count. They Transferred money online before we even agreed the final amount. Both buyers were men and were intimidating and put on a lot of pressure. Trying to hurry us and walking into the house.

so they’ve not long left and are now calling and texting saying the car is going wrong.

Obviously it is a scam. We know because our friend; who is a good mechanic serviced and checked it last week.

but how best to deal with it.
I have suggested my husband ignore all calls and texts form any number we don’t know. I’m obviously worried they’ll turn up though. if they do I’ll call the police immediately.

Any other advice?

Why would they say there's something wrong with the car if the transaction or cash is fake?

To get us to give some money back to them I assume?

The refund if given will go to a different account.

The cash might be fine but if they come back with a "faulty" car DH will be trying to fix it with one man while the other sneaks into house to steal back the cash. They've already tried to bluster and got into house on viewing, so they know how to push DH buttons already.

Either way, it sounds a right nightmare.

Yea possibly this too. Cash is out the house so they won’t be getting they if they come. We’ve also contacted several friends and neighbours so if they arrive we won’t be alone. Also a neighbour is a police officer and is chatting to DH now.

the more I think about it the more fucking livid I am at the cheek of them. They already got the vehicle for under price, so I assume they now want to try us again now they’ve already has some success.

just really annoyed with myself I didn’t go out earlier to support DH.

I honestly think they are well out the area and not likely to be back. Don’t think they’re local

Transfers can be recalled for 90 days

You don't have that money yet Flowers so don't give them it back no matter what happens

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 20:02

They’re sending implied threats now.
“ we know family at X traveller site local to you”.

massive massive cunts.

getting DH to block everywhere, close hi Facebook etc.

Can they?! How ?!

so they can get their money that has been transferred back. They transferred a significant amount. Is it worth contacting the bank?

Oysterbabe · 10/06/2023 20:17

This is awful, I hate these cunts. My dad had some issues selling a car once, he was pressured and intimidated to sell it cheap.
I think I'd only sell to a garage.

Muncha · 10/06/2023 20:18

These people are scum. They can reverse a transfer in some situations but not in all

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 20:18

Calling police now.
Absolute horrible bastard. Now I’ll not sleep tonight. Have 3 kids in the house. Daughters birthday so she has a friend over too. Should be enjoying our day not dealing with selfish scum who won’t work for an honest living

Some people are just trash 😔

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 20:22

Deep down I honestly don’t think they’ll cause harm or even turn up here. I think they’re using their personal identity as a threat, saying they have links with others. I think they’re trying and scamming, but I’m hopeful it won’t get any more nasty. Maybe I’m just being naive though.

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 10/06/2023 20:33

So a scam can work in several ways one way is they use someone else's bank account to transfer the money when that is reported as stolen the bank recalls the money your out the money they have the item

Have you transferred the title yet? My exes brother sold a car they used it in a ram raid the same day fortunately he had (legitimately) an off duty police officer their when the sale happened or he could have been in a lot of trouble

Did you take a copy of their driving licence number? (Sounds odd but I did when I sold my car)

FlamingoQueen · 10/06/2023 20:36

Sorry you are dealing with this.

A little naive but some people think they are untouchable

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 20:37

God I hope it’s not a scam where they can get that money transferee back. It’s needed for the disability adaptions for a really poorly relative.

OP posts:
HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 20:37

We’ll just have to replace the money ourselves if that happens.

What about if my husband transfers it out into my account?? Would that make it harder to recall?

Sadly I don't think it's about the physical money, he could transfer that to you and they could still recall other funds from that account. If that's makes sense. Not sure what happens if the account is completely empty though.

So sorry you're going through all this stress!

LuckOfTheDrawer · 10/06/2023 20:49

It sounds like you're doing the right things OP. I'm really sorry this has happened to you - some people really are just absolute fuckers.

Hopefully the rest of your weekend will be really boring.

Not sure what to do with the cash in the account. The account it was transferred to is empty now- sent to other accounts. No idea if they can reclaim from other accounts. I suspect they won’t though- I’m almost certain they are probably know. They were too good. Also they are on camera so if they say funds were stollen wouldn’t that make them the ones who stole?

just not sure what to do now about the money in the bank.

urgh. I hope the weekend is boring too!!

I would speak to your bank. Explain that the sale has gone through, but these people are threatening you and you suspect they may try to reverse the bank transfer.
Have you spoken to police and gotten an incident number over the threats?

HaveIbeenscammed · 10/06/2023 21:05

He spoken to police but I don’t think he got an incident number? Said they won’t do a report at the moment. Shall we ask for one

If they are complaining the car is faulty I’d tell them to bring it back for a full refund and be done with it. Sell it again to people who aren’t scammers.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 10/06/2023 21:13

Can't you ring your bank and tell them what's happened OP, at least that way they will be aware if you have been scammed?

I do hope that nothing further happens.

No because I think then we’ll get in to an issue of them saying they have more cash than they did. Already saying they gave 6 when it was only 5k cash. Sent the additional online while here and now saying that is 1 too much because they actually did give 6k.

i want as little to do with them as possible.

Husband should have said no straight away as soon as they arrived.
clearly in future we need to sort big sells together or with another person to help.
