Is this a bit weird? - I think someone is using my address

A couple of months ago we received a letter addressed to someone not known us. Didn’t think much of it and assumed it must’ve been for a previous occupant.

Then DH took in a parcel delivery. He thought it was for me but once he had it inside he realised although the parcel had our address on it was for someone else - the same person we previously received mail for.

Later someone knocked on the door and said we had his parcel. As I handed it over I recognised him as someone I have seen a couple of times standing near my house in a dressing gown and slippers.

Then yesterday we saw the same guy stood outside our house. A car pulled up and gave the guy a takeaway. Do you think he ordered takeaway to our address then intercepted it? Why is he using our address?

Speak to your postie OP particularly if they are your regular postie. Ours delivered a letter to us for my in-laws despite them having a different last name to us (mother in law remarried when DH was 6 after his DF died) the wrong street name (think Redhall versus Redbank) and the wrong house number (a number which doesn’t exist in this street). The postcode was correct and our postie recognised the name as being a regular one we take post for. There is definitely something dodgy going on.

Not a good idea to open the mail. It’s illegal.

It is NOT illegal in these circumstances.

stupendous1 · 10/06/2023 22:47

Another vote for he's living in your loft

Absolutely. It is only illegal if you intend on causing detriment to the person named on the letter.

Pottedpalm · 11/06/2023 08:24

Thank you @Tulipvase. The only way to get the post to the correct person was to
open it. We assumed , on seeing it was school reports, that there might have been an error entering info into the school database ( though unlikely as the house name/street name and postcode all correct fir our location), but the mother confirmed with the school that these were definitely the details her ex had given her. Lord knows why he picked our house.

Good to see that the mumsnet law that this misinformation must be posted on any thread about misdelivered post has applied 😀

What would I be looking for on my credit file? I looked at it a few days ago as we just did our mortgage and there was nothing untoward

So long as you have access to your credit file just keep monitoring it. I’m paranoid though!

HeroOfMyTale · 11/06/2023 16:03

It may not necessarily show up because due to Data protection regulations it is only stuff in your own name that you will be able to access.

someone taking out a loan in a false name at your address will be treated as someone elses separate personal data.

Plus some of these scams (mobile phone delivery etc)aren't about credit /mortgage/loans any way.

IncreasinglyGrumpy · 11/06/2023 17:41

Not sure this chap is homeless wearing dressing gown and slippers?

Theoldwrinkley · 11/06/2023 17:48

I would be worried. Recently (last 3 months or so) there was a thing on 'you and yours' on R4 about criminals registering their 'business' at an address (owners knew nothing about it). With a 'business' bank account they have access to loans, grants overdrafts etc which they have no intention of paying back. Il will be on BBC sounds.

Tessabelle74 · 11/06/2023 18:00

Omg, are people REALLY this dense? You just handed over a parcel delivered to your home to a stranger without any questions? He is clearly using your address for nefarious purposes and I'd be surprised if you're not paying for it with the credit card he's set up using your address etc.

Hmm1234 · 11/06/2023 18:14

It’s sounds like the addresses are being confused regularly by delivery people and he probably waits knowing it’s going to the wrong house

StaunchMomma · 11/06/2023 18:19

Is there a village whatsapp group? If so, I'd drop a message asking if anyone knows who it is and stating that if you will not be accepting any more parcels for that person at your address as they don't live there AND that you've been advised to report it to Police as fraudulent activity.

If your village is anything like mine it'll be sorted in about 10 minutes flat 😂

Middleagedspreadisreal · 11/06/2023 18:22

Ask him

Abouttimemum · 11/06/2023 18:46

Just seen this on the daily round up and now I’m fully invested OP so can you please keep us updated? What a mystery!! I hope all is ok for you.

Londonlou2 · 11/06/2023 19:03

Please be really careful and contact any companies etc that deliver parcels to say this individual does not live at your address. I have a rental flat near my house and someone opened a JD Williams account in my name at the address, was ordering clothes and collecting parcels there. I only found a letter when visiting the property saying money was owed. It did not show up on my credit file as JD Williams don’t do proper credit reference checks, they just send letters if you don’t pay threatening to mark your credit file. The burden of proof is then passed to you to prove you don’t live there and haven’t set up the account. Be warned!

CantFindMyMarbles · 11/06/2023 19:10

I’d be having a conversation with him and telling him I’ll be contacting the authorise if he continues.

Unsure33 · 11/06/2023 19:16

Maxaluna · 10/06/2023 14:53

The parcel collection thing is a known scam. Hopefully you'll be okay, but the scammer orders something to be delivered to the victim's address. The victim accepts the delivery, then the scammer calls round for it. The victim can find their being charged for a mobile phone contract, and have no proof that they handed the goods over to a stranger.

Yep that’s what happened to me . It’s complicated but clever .

tiredofitall99 · 11/06/2023 19:17

It can easily take a month or more for things to start showing on the credit file

Thanks for this info.

So what is the answer if the package has been left outside/ someone taken it in. And you have no idea where to send it back to?

Queenbee77 · 11/06/2023 19:47

Have you checked your attic!😳

I've always found a receipt from Just Eat to be a great official ID document when my passport has expired

🙄

You're a chubby funster though

Lollipop81 · 11/06/2023 20:03

Fraud

MannyTeddy · 11/06/2023 20:17

If any more packages get delivered to your house with his name on, don't accept them from the driver. Also any post comes just put not at this address and post it in a letter box. Maybe him not getting them will deter him. 🥰👍

MannyTeddy · 11/06/2023 20:18

Also maybe he lives in a caravan with no address so had to resort to this but again its not your problem.
