Scared of wearing summer clothes

fedupmumof2 · 10/06/2023 08:14

I’m trying to change my life and feel very low in confidence and self esteem. You all were so lovely when I reached out before to say how I was feeling depressed.

Could I please get some advice on this: I want to start wearing summer dresses. I actually wear dresses in winter with tights or leggings but in summer I don’t. I feel worried incase my dress is see-through or if it blows up in the wind (I know this might sound strange). My confidence is very low. Can I ask advice on how I can wear dresses and not worry about this? I was wondering if I could possibly wear cycling shirts under or would that look strange?

I put in a lovely dress this morning and even my toddler said how lovely I look! But my confidence is so knocked I took it off and out my jeans on again. I live in jeans and leggings.

@fedupmumof2 I hear you, sorry you feel a bit rubbish. I’m sure you look gorg in your dress but I understand the confidence issues too.

I wear a body suit with shorts under mine, it holds my stomach/ thighs in and I feel comfortable knowing that if there’s a Monroe moment everything is in place!

Im a size 16, used to be a 12. It’s been a hard adjustment for me mainly because I only have myself to blame. Emotional eating and drinking was always going to get me in the end.

Try to embrace you, flaws and all ❤️

RunnyPaint · 10/06/2023 08:53

I chopped most of the legs off an old pair of leggings to make cycle shorts to wear under dresses. Do you have a spare/old pair? 🙂

You could also try wearing your lovely dress a few times when you're at home, just round the house and garden. Then you'd get used to the 'feel' of it and be more confident. I think part of the problem is that initially it feels odd - I know that when I first switch to a dress/skirt in summer, it takes a few days to get used to not being in trousers.

M&S do fantastic Cool Tech slips. They're feather light, cool and very comfortable. They stop dresses being see through, and make clothes hang beautifully. I often wear the camisole version under thin tops.

Maireas · 10/06/2023 09:08

Sorry, that should be Cool Comfort.
Not Cool Tech. They are amazing!

LilacLemur · 10/06/2023 09:12

The snag one are amazing. I prefer colours to nude as it shows you're wearing something if that makes sense 😂

Sloggi do the long john (cycle shorts length) underwear with lace above the knee, but a bit pricey. Peacocks and Next also did them last year with non-scratchy lace detail above the knee. Important that they are not too hot which is why I would go for high cotton content rather than ones that are trying to hold in lumps and bumps but are too hot to actually wear. Last year a lot of the M&S ones had bad reviews for being too short on the leg to actually stop thighs rubbing. I have these Next ones which have high cotton content and are very comfortable but are definitely not shapewear (size down if getting them) : https://www4.next.co.uk/style/st637507/666199#666199

Snag tights chub rub shorts :)

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 10/06/2023 09:41

I like cotton waist slips as I feel the heat, cycling shorts would make me feel hot and sweaty🙁even if dress catches breeze, at least I'm not showing off my thunder thighs they would scare little old ladies and small furry animals! 😆

anon1968 · 10/06/2023 09:48

Definitely cycling shorts underneath if it helps you feel better. I’ve also just purchased this if you like shorter dresses, good quality for the price. Built in shorts! 😁. https://fb.watch/l3YpVwdxDU/

Look up a company named Snag. They do cycle short type thingies designed to be worn under dresses. They come in loads of different colours and are made of the same material as good quality tights. Cycle shorts might look odd and be less comfortable as they're thicker.

JMSA · 10/06/2023 09:54

They also have the added bonus of stopping chub rub Blush

JMSA · 10/06/2023 09:54

I see I'm not the only one to mention them Grin

oviraptor21 · 10/06/2023 09:56

Either long dresses many of which are the height of summeriness - or for the dress you have - cotton undershorts. The last thing you want on a hot day is nylon.

Cotton waist slips are a boon.

itwasntmetho · 10/06/2023 09:57

I'd go with a playsuit.

continentallentil · 10/06/2023 09:59

Cycling shorts are a great idea

Lots of people wear chub rub shorts under all dresses, and cycling shorts under short ones, it’s not unusual at all.

Put on that dress! It’s a lovely part of summer and will both lift your mood and build your confidence

Do you have a link to a good one? Bear in mind the OPs requirements..

You can get v light high cotton content shorts, with an um, open gusset.

Is a waist slip not just an inner skirt, that would blow up anyway??

EveryLittleWish · 10/06/2023 10:04

I always wear shorts under my dresses . Sometimes it’s to prevent a chub rub but often I just like that I can go about and not worry about my dress flying up. I usually wear legging style shorts and they can’t be seen.

N0tfinished · 10/06/2023 10:05

I've bought underwear/anti chafing shorts off Amazon from a brand called Wirarpa. Can't link just now but they're easy to find. They're great - cotton, nicely weighty fabric and don't roll up or down. It's opened a whole new world for me! Dresses all summer long. I also have moved towards longer floaty styles, they're so comfy and cool, I worry less about my legs (bashed up from constantly walking into the dishwasher door). Also you don't have to worry about them riding up too high when you sit. I have multiple Seasalt dresses as I prefer to wear natural fabrics.

I had to put on jeans yesterday and it was miserable. We've had a run of hot weather here in Ireland, it's been bliss wafting around with my floaty skirts.

Stardust75 · 10/06/2023 10:06

Snag tights are amazing. They do chub rub/ cycling shorts and are very lightweight but give the coverage you need for extra confidence. I used to be a bit like you but had a major life event that helped me put things in perspective a bit. Now I couldn't give two shits, I'll happily parade around in a swimming costume in my size 18/20 body and not care. Life is too short, we are all different and beautiful. Who gives a toss what other people think? Get those dresses on and enjoy your summer you wonderful human.

No I've seen so many in all different styles. They don't blow up and you would have to specifically look for a see through one. They come in all different lengths and fits.

What am I missing? She doesn't mention size or style just not feeling exposed.

MyNameisMathilda · 10/06/2023 10:19

Everyone wears these shorts now. I had a Marilyn Monroe moment recently in the USA but was just laughing due to wearing these.
