To wonder why all these teenagers are being killed in police car chases?

Are they only being chased if they are driving dangerously? First there was Cardiff now the kid on the bike. I know kids do silly things with cars but aibu to think the police don't come off well with this?

The police are doing nothing wrong following people who are breaking the law.

The blame rests fully with the people supplying teenagers with these electric bikes.

berksandbeyond · 11/06/2023 09:55

Maybe people should try bringing their kids up to 1) not break the law 2) not run from the bloody police

BG2015 · 11/06/2023 09:56

I do think the press are jumping on this too and reporting specifically about these cases, this making us aware more and more about police chases.

LadyJ2023 · 11/06/2023 10:13

Sorry but no matter what age the police are there to prevent breaking of laws

FrostyFifi · 11/06/2023 10:13

Every single thread there are always those justifying antisocial behaviour by teenagers. Screw the fact that it makes everyone else's life a bloody misery and a risk.
I wish the police would chase more of them, maybe it would penetrate the thick skulls of them and their parents and they'd stop doing stupid dangerous things.

It's NOT police 'chases', but that sounds better doesn't it for the law breakers..
'Oh they were scared being chased by the police' doesn't it!

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and surely there's a certain amount of common sense involved in terms of what vehicles you allow your 15/16 year old to operate?

Of the two Ely boys, one was at a Pupil Referral Unit, and the other at a school for pupils with Social Emotional and Mental Health problems. They weren't on the straight and narrow, and hadn't been for quite some time.

It speaks volumes that the official, as provided by the family, picture is of then around age 12 still looking quite cute and boyish. The ones the press have dug out later from their SM show then scowling behind their hoods, fingers in gun poses and holding massive spliffs.

Tragedy for their family they died young, but I imagine they were a couple of nightmare youth for general society.

There's no police chase though.

Let's not let facts get in the way of posters trying to blame police and alleviate the criminal for their behaviour!

A child (14yo) local to me died on an electric motorbike last week. His mum bought it for him. He crashed it that night, at about 1.30am, and died. No helmet. Too young to ride it. Completely avoidable death.

I was driving through Ely earlier, where the two boys died on ebikes.

Ahead of me was a boy, of about the same age, on a very overpowered ebike, face covered from the eyes down to obscure his identity, no helmet and a jacket that had emblazoned on the back "RIP Kyrees and Harvey Forever Young".

Clearly no lessons have been learned locally.

You can also guarantee at the funeral there will be idiots on these bikes and revved up cars because that's how you remember the dead innit.

His mother should be charged. Idiot

Helen Brook (founder of Brook Advisory Centres) made the following statement in a letter to The Times in 1980

"There are countless men and women, parents, who are too selfish, too ignorant, too lazy to be bothered about their children's general education. From birth till death it is now the privilege of the parental State to take major decisions— objective, unemotional, the State weighs up what is best for the child."

Plus ça change

That's tragic.
Every single time there's a story of a child dead due to adults willingly enabling them to break the law my heart breaks. What chance to kids have if the adults are teaching them the law doesn't matter? It's tragic.

And yet strangely that case hasn't made the national news

cutegorilla · 11/06/2023 15:19

I remember when I was a teenager (far longer ago than I care to think) a couple of teenagers in a stolen car were being chased by the police when they crashed and died. There were riots because people felt that the police should not have chased them. One of their Dads was interviewed on TV and was really unhappy that they were being referred to as joyriders. He said they weren't joyriders, they were ramraiders. That was their job!

Engage in criminal activity, expect the police to pull you up. Any actions trying to evade that are entirely on you. Actions have consequences.

piedbeauty · 11/06/2023 15:21

No, @DisquietintheRanks . Do you think that's because newspapers actively want to blame the police for these deaths??

You must live near me...so sad and so pointless really.

crabbyoldappletree · 11/06/2023 16:48

Why isn't this seen as a form of neglect and parent(s) prosecuted? At what age of child dying would the parents be held accountable? And why were the 14 and 15 yr olds out at the early hours? Especially on a school night. These kids don't stand a chance.
I really think it's time to get tough on crap parenting. It's shite parenting which is responsible for so many of societies ills.

With the scooters, When this first appeared to be a problem my local police were really hot on taking them off people. Now they’ve given up, which then encourages more because “everyone else is doing it”.

whilst I absolutely agree environmentally (parking the mining lithium issue) these are great for getting people out of cars. I’m not sure the trial has gone that well. There’s been multiple deaths on them.

It's been found that e-scooters don't actually get people out of their cars. They're usually used for journeys that people would otherwise have walked or cycled.

DdraigGoch · 12/06/2023 00:34

smooththecat · 10/06/2023 22:35

So, people quoting me? You’re against further law and regulation around these vehicles? That was the argument I made.

There's no point in tightening regulations, the existing ones just need enforcing.

Sadly whenever the police do try and enforce the law they are subjected to trial by tabloid

Where are these parents getting the money? PPs say that these bikes are worth £5k, I never had presents of that sort of value when I was a kid.
