Is hayfever really that bad?

DH gets hayfever. Every year he's a mess for the whole of June. Constant complaining, loud nose blowing, groaning noises and takes three showers a day. As a non-sufferer, I find it really hard to be sympathetic. In fact I give him no sympathy because it irritates me that he makes such a big fuss about it, especially because it doesn't seem to stop him playing golf (ie deliberately spending 4 hours surrounded by the thing he's allergic to).

Is hayfever really as bad as he makes out? AIBU not to be nicer to him?

It can be horrendous yes. I'd much rather have a cold - you blow your nose and the snot is gone for a while. With hayfever it's a constant drip, drip, so you sniff and blow and sniff and blow and your nose gets more and more sore. I can get through half a box of tissues in a day. You have to sleep a weird position to try and make the dripping nose stop so you can sleep.

Sore eyes, sore throat...

All leading to a headache.

And it puts me in such a bad mood! I normally do 90% of the cooking, but if (as usually happens) no one else offers I make someone do it so I'm not dripping/blowing my nose constantly while stirring pans, and getting even more mad.

Not to mention that when everyone else is sitting on the grass in the sun enjoying a picnic, if you join them the whole setup just makes the hayfever worse.

Luckily mine has improved greatly over the years.

Horrific, had to leave work. Can't sleep. Headaches, flushing, aching and it's relentless.

Give me a hangover anyway as that goes away.

OP, have some sympathy. I used to have severe hayfever, and I can honestly say it impacted my quality of life. (Strangely, my allergies cleared up in lockdown and have never really returned.)

Have you ever complained to your DH about period pain or maybe childbirth? Did he give you any sympathy?
if he didn’t then don’t worry about not giving him any over his hay fever….
If he has, then think on

This is a fair question.

It's fucking awful.

This 👆

Hayfever interferes with my whole life. I have to take a high dose anti histamine, rotating every so often as I get immune. I wake up some nights with my nose streaming so much, I'll use a whole toilet roll blowing it. I often have to shower several times a day to wash pollen off, and can't go out quite a few days in the summer because of it. Golf would not be an option for me. I don't get it anywhere near as badly as I used to. Worst was when my eyes swelled up so much I couldn't see.

So, per the above, it's fucking awful.

KingOfThieves · 08/06/2023 23:47

It’s horrific. Makes me want to claw my eyes out and punch myself in the nose. I get wheezy and get sinus headaches/infections because if it too. And it makes no difference if I leave the house or not, in hay fever season it finds me no matter what.

NancyAndLee · 08/06/2023 23:53

My DS keeps getting sent home from school as it's so bad, so yeah for some people it is.

YewandOak · 08/06/2023 23:55

Yes it is really that bad!

I want to sandpaper my eyes, then take them out and put them in a bowl of ice, they're constantly burning and itching,I have a thumping headache and can't stop sniffing.
I missed a staff meeting today as I'm so shattered with it all.I'm hoping I'll be ok to go to work on Saturday.I'd rather have flu and give birth with no painkillers than suffer with hayfever.
Roll on October,I get back to some sort of normal then.

It can be awful, not always. I remember one year being really ill, most years it is horrible but never as bad as that time.

I'm surprised he wants to go and play golf out in the open though I suppose he isn't near too many trees. It probably takes his mind off it for a while.

AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2023 23:57

YABU. It’s fucking horrific. I get it all year round but so bad in summer it absolutely knocks me off my feet, and there’s no antihistamine invented that touches it. Sometimes I feel like I can’t breathe. And I’m so fucking SICK of sneezing.

It's fucking awful.

Yup agree, sometimes a whole day of real suffering and sometimes several weeks

As a non-sufferer, I find it really hard to be sympathetic.

And your justification for that is... what, exactly? You don't have it, so it can't be that bad? It's annoying for you, so he should just stop feeling bad? Angry Hayfever can be fucking awful. Maybe try to stop being so self-centred.

As for the golf, it's understandable that he's reluctant to give up something he enjoys. Besides, when my hayfever was at its worst (from mid teens to my mid 30s!), it was awful wherever I was, not just when on grass. Actually, being in the city was one of the worst places (exacerbated by pollution, I expect). It is debilitating and exhausting. The only tablets that worked on me made me like a zombie too.

Agree with all of this!

Hay fever is bad no matter where you are. Op, you complain when he's at home. Then you complain when he's out.

Nighttime in my room with the windows shut is horrid. Cannot breathe properly and wake up with my nose crusted and the skin cracking.

KitchenSinkLlama · 09/06/2023 09:19

Mine is hell. Sinus infections, eyes sore headache runny nose. I'm on the highest dose AH which help. I use the beco cleanse plus nasal wash which is great.

I've also bought a big fuck off air purifier which is making a big difference.
