Does drinking a bottle of wine, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a drinking problem?

Or am I over-reacting? I'm just concerned about a friend who causally told me this earlier...

OP posts:
DeliciouslyDecadent · 07/06/2023 20:49

Why don't you ask your friend how she is OP?

Did you react at all when she told you this?

Needwine999 · 07/06/2023 20:50

If every night, a bottle is a problem, if a glass or 2 a night, fine. A bottle a night is a problem.

Tigofigo · 07/06/2023 20:53

I think it's a lot, yeah. Especially to drink when by yourself.

Is it a problem? I think societally we have an alcohol problem. I include my own consumption in this.

Budikka · 07/06/2023 20:53

If it has to be a bottle, maybe try getting it down to one of those half-bottles?

Glastobore · 07/06/2023 20:56

I'd be quite pissed if I drank a whole bottle of wine, id sleep really badly and I'd feel rough the next day. Shame because I used to enjoy drinking wine.

OCarumba · 07/06/2023 20:57

If it was a one off or on rare occasion, fine. Every week? Excessive and probably some level of alcohol dependency.

Whenwillitallmakesense · 07/06/2023 20:57

Still no OP, I see

DeflatedAgain · 07/06/2023 21:06

God, I hate it when the OP disappears.

I NEED THE DETAILS 😂

@SavvyWavvy 1 large glass of wine as served in the majority of bars and restaurants now is 250ml.

A bottle of wine is 750ml.

Basic maths suggests 1 bottle = 3 (large) glasses.

Most places don't even bother with small (125ml) glasses any more. It's either medium (175ml) or large.

Or there are pubs that serve the small individual bottles, which are about 187ml each.

Sure, and I could use 375ml glasses and claim a bottle was only two glasses of wine. It doesn’t change the fact that an entire bottle of wine is far too much for one person to regularly drink in an evening.

Our perception of what is normal and healthy has become very skewed in recent years. This applies to alcohol (particularly wine) and food. People also aren’t taking into account that an equivalent bottle of wine today is more alcoholic than the same bottle bought 10 or 20 years ago because of the increased sugar content of the grapes. Add to this the massive glass sizes and we’re all drinking far more than we used to. But for some reason wine has become the socially acceptable drink, especially for middles class women.

ShippingForecastMeditator · 07/06/2023 21:28

Isn't it weird that a large proportion of people think it's completely normal to drink, when it's been proved without a doubt that alcohol causes serious damage? The human urge to self-destruct is a powerful one. All the effort we go to to raise money for Cancer Research etc....

No one has said it would be fine to drink this amount ‘regularly’ though. The opposite in fact.

You sound massively controlling. Checking the bin and marking the empties on the calendar?

I lived with a drunk and it was one of the most miserable times of my life. Yes, I used to check how much he’d drank because he continuously lied about it. I got sick of the bad moods when he didn’t have a drink-and of changing the sheets because he’d wet the bed. I finally flipped when I got a mouthful of abuse when I said I couldn’t lend him any money to buy booze-he earned 3x more than me. His friends used to laugh at prudish old me when I said I was scared about his drinking. Leaving him was the best thing I did.

The UK has a serious binge drinking problem. It’s part of the culture, and very difficult for people to understand that and change.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 07/06/2023 21:49

Its a lot at one go, so concerning at the least.

The obsession with wine drives me absolutely up the wall

What obsession and why?

LolaSmiles · 07/06/2023 21:52

As a one off it isn't ideal but it probably isn't a big deal.

If it's regularly then I'd say it is a sign of an alcohol problem, and a pet peeve of mine is when excessive alcohol consumption is downplayed because the person is drinking nice wine (and probably holds down a nice job well and is high functioning).

FiddleLeaf · 07/06/2023 21:53

Only if she said it was a daily issue.

People have drunk for literally millennia, so no it’s not weird at all, it’s embedded in many cultures to some degree.

Alcohol in excess causes serious damage, moderate alcohol intake does not and it has some benefits eg stress relief.

SparklyPinkBalloon · 07/06/2023 21:55

Yes. Drinking 1L of water or juice alone on a school night is already bizarre. 1L of wine is 100% alcoholism.

A bottle of wine isn’t 1l. And why would drinking 1l of water be bizarre ‘on a school night’? Would it be ok at the weekend? 🤣

A bottle of wine is 750ml. Happy to help.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 07/06/2023 21:59

What about a litre of tea? During the day!?!
I definitely do that! 😂

Most people have work the next day on week nights so if someone's drinking excessively on a week night they're either likely to be hungover for work and getting the kids ready for school, or they're so used to drinking that much it doesn't affect them. Neither is a good situation.

My question was about drinking 1l of water, not wine. The poster said drinking 1l of water would be bizarre on a school night. Water is unlikely to cause a hangover.

WellPlaced · 07/06/2023 22:03

I’ve done it many times
I’m not an alcoholic.
