To take Yasmin for acne

Posting for traffic here. Just wondering whether anyone has experience of using the Yasmin combined pill to treat acne. It's for my teen DD if that's relevant. Thanks all!

Two of mine did and it worked really well.

Hippolyte · 07/06/2023 09:50

Thank you, that's reassuring. Can I ask what age they started?

Also any issues with weight gain, moods etc? Thanks

I did (not as a teen), it did help with acne but do get her to keep track of other symptoms including mood changes.
Any pill I was on made me quite teary.

Nothing cleared my skin up like yasmin did. I took it in my teens then stopped when I became pregnant. Went on the implant after that which gave me horrendous acne. Went back on yasmin a year ago and now have perfect skin.

StormShadow · 07/06/2023 09:59

Worked for me

Hippolyte · 07/06/2023 10:05

Thanks everyone I'm quite nervous about the decision so it's great to hear positive experiences. How quickly did it work for the acne?

I took this as an older teen. My skin was completely clear within 6 weeks. No weight gain or other side effects, it suited me more than other pills I had tried. I hope its the same for your daughter.

FrankieStar · 07/06/2023 10:16

I took this in my early 20's for my horrible skin and worked an absolute treat. Obviously we're all different, but for myself I had zero side effects. If I remember correctly think I'd tried various antibiotics for my skin prior to this, some worked a little bit for a period of time then stopped working and never resolved the horrendously greasly skin i had in my youth, whereas yasmin did. Can't remember exactly how long it took to work but i think it was a few months ish.

Good luck OP, hope it works for your daughter if she does try it x

I tried it in my 20s but it gave me awful anxiety/palpitations so I stopped after a fortnight. Dianette worked for me at that age.

RhosynBach · 07/06/2023 10:22

It worked for me as a teen but I did put on weight too. However I also learnt to drive in that time so some of the weight gain could well have been the fact I stopped walking as much! I don’t think you’re meant to stay on it for too long though. I was on it for a good few years before my gp realised and was a bit alarmed. I was fine though. But I’d check how long she could take it for.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/06/2023 10:22

I've been on it 9 years and rarely get a spot

tulippa · 07/06/2023 10:23

I've used it for a while. It works well and I get no side effects. I've used Dianette I'm the past and that worked well too.

AllTheChaos · 07/06/2023 10:25

It worked for me BUT also resulted in dreadful mood swings etc., so I stopped. Cutting refined sugar out is what cleared my skin in the end. I really resented my mum for being right about it though as I’ve always had a sweet tooth!

Rinkydinkydoodle · 07/06/2023 10:32

Hi! I don’t know if it’s helpful to you because I wasn’t a teen, but I took Dianette from 19-21 which was a godsend, I had totally clear skin. However you can only stay on it so long. After that I took a few others, I can’t remember the names, and it was Yasmin that eventually worked, I was on it for years, had little or no side effects and my skin was pretty good. I do agree with the PP about the refined sugar as well, and alcohol (not so much an issue for teens I’m thinking but I always got way worse spots at Christmas!) but hormones played havoc with my skin and Yasmin helped.

Luckygreenduck · 07/06/2023 10:37

Yasmin worked well for my ance but Dianette was even better. I had no side effects but it did hide symptoms of PCOS. Obviously great to not have symptoms but it did mean I wasn't aware until I started TTC. I was on various pills from 14- 28 and very little side effects- actually hated coming off them as my skin was horrible again!

BoxOfCats · 07/06/2023 10:43

I have taken it for years for acne and still do now at 41.

Dianette isn't licenced any more.

NotAnAngelOrAHero · 07/06/2023 12:43

Worked beautifully for me!
Tried lymecycline first and that didn't work as well as Yasmin did. My skin was so clear and fresh looking.

Took it from 22-26 and about 6 months ago decided to stop taking it to see if anything had changed with my skin. I now get a few chin/jaw hormonal spots around period time but my skin is clear the rest of the time. Don't know if my body changed on it's own over time or if the pill helped regulate my hormones and it stuck?

Homeywomey · 07/06/2023 12:46

I took another pill when I was a teen to treat acne, in conjunction with roaccutane - that worked well. I was put into Yasmin in my 20’s and it did make me very teary and gave me awful anxiety - took me ages to realise it was the pill doing that. However, that’s not to say it will happen to your daughter, there are also rumours that roaccutane can cause depression but that never happened with me!

Whendidigetsoold · 07/06/2023 12:47

Two of my DD's went on it for their skin. It worked amazingly for ons. Unfortunately did nothing for the other and she is now on tretinoin via her dermatologist. Definitely worth a try.

sunglasses · 26/07/2023 10:46

Can I jump on this thread and ask those who have taken it are still taking Yasmin- were you advised by the doctor to stop because of increased risk of blood clots? My 18 year old DD was prescribed it at 16 as she was having terrible anxiety/ PMT symptoms and has been fine on it since. It also cleared up all her back acne. Rang docs this morning for advice on wether she should have a review/ check up for blood pressure etc and Doctor virtually ordered her to stop taking it and swap to Microgynon. She had initially tried this pill and felt even worse on it and the same doctor told her to stop taking it! Yasmin was prescribed by the hospital doctor she was referred to and she was checked up on once from them but basically left to get on with it after that. She is now panicked and doesn’t know what to do. Can she stay on it if no problems?

Okbyethen · 26/07/2023 10:57

I'm in my 30's and take Eloine for my skin (acne and bacne). Not sure if it's similar to Yasmin but worth checking out.

Works wonders, I've been on it for about 5 years and have no complaints, my skin is the best it's ever been! I did come off it a year or so ago for a few months though and my face and back went straight back to acne covered (within days unfortunately) 😔
However after about 2 weeks back on it my skin was clear again! For me it's a miracle pill!
