To expect people to close the gate?

I'm fed up to the gills of people leaving my front gate open. Posties, delivery drivers, people pushing fliers through the mail slot, my FIL, it drives me up the wall.

We have dogs and don't want them running into the street, so I'm constantly on gate watch duty. I'm adding a spring so it will automatically close, but the latch will still be manual so it won't be completely securely shut.

I think it's so rude to just flounce off with the gate open behind you, it takes .005 seconds to close it on the way out! I suspect society is generally more thoughtless these days across the board and this might just be a symptom of that.

AIBU to think you should close a gate behind you if it was closed when you came in?

My parents had this issue and put a sign on the gate which has dramatically decreased the amount of times people leave it open. People should close it regardless if it’s closed when they get there but I think a sign can help prompt people

We had a spring put on ours so it closes automatically. Useful as we can hear when someone comes to the house.

I can't imagine anyone will disagree with you, do you need to ask?

We've got a small gate and a driveway, the driveway doesn't have a gate

When we moved in twelve years ago people posting fliers and letters would use the gate and never close it so DH got some really thick zip ties, it hasn't opened since and we've also let the hedge grow across it
