Group chats and irrelevant clutter

I’m on group chats, with friends and family that are exchanges of family photos, stupid stuff and meet up suggestions. All fairly harmless and not too much guff.

I’ve recently joined a running group chat and a local meet up group. OMG the amount of totally irrelevant nonsense. People messaging to say ‘enjoy your day!’ And loads of people piling on to heart back etc…or saying ‘I’m at work I can’t’…..and on and on.

I just want to find out when the next run is. Happy to chat nonsense when I’m there….

how do you cut through the nonsense?

And these are big groups with lots of people who don’t really know each other….not work groups or anything.

am I just a curmudgeon?

2 options:

  1. suck it up
  2. leave

the group was there first so tbh I don’t think you can moan too much, it just isn’t for you

declutteringmymind · 06/06/2023 08:37

Mute the group

Only look at it when you need to.

Marblessolveeverything · 06/06/2023 08:39

Wouldn't most groups simply have a notification group and a chat group🤷.

That has been my experience. Maybe suggest it to help missing a run .

MaudGonneOutForChips · 06/06/2023 08:41

Just mute it and check periodically. I think most people have most group chats muted.

Showerroomlove · 06/06/2023 08:41

I don’t get group chats at all, and engage much less because they are weird and inconsequential usually. YANBU.

DisappearingGirl · 06/06/2023 08:41

Ugh I hate this. You can mute just that group. It won't ping or send you a notification but you'll still see that there are new messages when you go into WhatsApp.

Doesn't help you find out when the next run is though! I agree that a separate notifications group where only admins can post is a good idea!

ClaraBourne · 06/06/2023 08:43

I mute every WhatsApp group I'm on. Silence is bliss! Read if you want or need to,

Namechanginggiraffe · 06/06/2023 08:44

I mute all group chats.

Hoolihan · 06/06/2023 08:46

I'm on a group for my son's sports team, there's about 35 kids involved and whenever one of them has a birthday someone posts 'happy birthday to Dylan!' and EVERYONE ON THE GROUP writes "happy birthday Dylan hope you have a lovely day!'. The kids aren't even reading it! Drives me fucking mental.

Coffeetree · 06/06/2023 08:58

Muting doesn't help. You end up with 80 messages, and maybe one of them gives actual relevant info.

The only group chats I'm on are one family group chat, and one for work which is strictly business, as in the admin actually deletes irrelevant crap. A big relief!

Namechanginggiraffe · 06/06/2023 09:56

admin actually deletes irrelevant crap amazing! Got any jobs going??
😂

yes this! Why??

But tbh there must be people on here who do that.
