To be panicking

Hi,

So I had a glass jar of black pepper, just the usual thing they come in. I dropped it a couple of times but have still used it. Today after lunch, I developed stomach pains and when I was eating I felt something stuck in my throat but I thought it was a lettuce leaf.
Until I went to make dinner and I remember the pepper jar, I rinsed it out and I think there is a small crack at the bottom.
I'm now panicking that I have swallowed glass, what should I do??

Do you mean a pepper grinder?

cryinglaughing · 05/06/2023 18:43

I would have thought the chances of ingesting glass from the inside of the jar are vanishingly small.

Are you a generally anxious person?

Scont · 05/06/2023 18:48

A small crack won't have caused you to swallow glass. If there was any glass then it wouldn't have got through the grinder. Does the crack even look like some glass is missing? Much more likely to be something else.

Cherryblossom99 · 05/06/2023 18:49

No, like just a normal like shaker I think it's called.
Yeah, I am quite an anxious person in general 😳 I'm really panicking now because of the stomach pain. It was kind of in the centre at first and then moved to the upper right side. It has eased now but I'm still really worried

I think the chances of you swelling glass are really really small. Presumably it will have been a tiny piece if it did somehow get through the grinder, so I think it will be fine

Cherryblossom99 · 05/06/2023 18:51

I've taken a photo, this is it. It looks really bad

I have awful anxiety and it's hard to be rational when it's you that's experiencing the issue. I would definitely be panicking too, but reading it as an outsider, IF you swallowed any glass (and it doesn't sound like you did), it doesn't sound like it'd be anywhere near big enough to cause any issues.
Anxiety can manifest physical symptoms, it is entirely possible you've imagined the feeling of something being stuck in your throat. I'm not mocking as I have done similar - have called 111 as an anxiety attack felt so much like a heart attack. 🙈 It's an awful condition.

tymberland · 05/06/2023 18:53

It's really hard to tell on that photo as you've had to zoom in so much, but I think it's a tiny piece - even if you did somehow swallow it. I'm not medically trained but I think it would be fine

DogInATent · 05/06/2023 18:57

It's a small crack, not a chip. There's no glass missing from the jar. You're fine.

Cherryblossom99 · 05/06/2023 18:57

I feel so stupid, I just to have obsessive intrusive thoughts about accidentally swallowing glass but I'd moved past it and barely thought of it anymore.
Today I was in a rush when eating and I don't know

I know I'm overreacting but I feel like I'm going to take a panic attack. I keep examining the glass and decanted the pepper in a bowl and tried to look through that. Things like this show me that I really need to work on my anxiety

Even if you did swallow it, it would be tiny and do absolutely nothing to your insides. You're spiralling, OP. Do you have anyone with you?

Cherryblossom99 · 05/06/2023 19:18

I'm alone, just trying to keep myself distracted and calm. Unfortunately spiralling is a pretty frequent occurrence 😢

Don't forget that breathing exercises will help to keep your heart rate down. The best thing you can do is keep yourself as calm as possible. Is there someone you can call or text that'll make you laugh?

Tonsillitisyetagain · 05/06/2023 20:57

Upper right is more likely to be your gallbladder than anything else. Your anxiety is linking in a coincidence into a catastrophe

Cherryblossom99 · 06/06/2023 06:17

I feel a bit better this morning. I feel really stupid, I know that my anxiety takes such a huge toll on me.
One of my big goals for myself is to find a way to reduce the effect it has on my life.
Spoke to some friends on the phone and distracted myself. Feel a good bit calmer now that I've slept and woke up still okay this morning.
Thanks all

Glad you are feeling better. Don't be to hard on yourself, you got through it. Well done.

A tiny bit of glass like that wouldn't necessarily do damage. Other things we eat can be sharper and they don't harm us. Our insides are tough and can take a lot!
