To stay off work for this?

I have viral conjunctivitis only in 1 eye up to now. It's very sore and irritating. I work as a home care assistant so drive house to house to care for vulnerable elderly people.

I'm struggling to really drive atm as I can't see very well out of one eye, it's very watery and swollen and I can't open it properly.

AIBU to think I don't go to work with this? My manager seems to think I can (as we're short staffed) but I'm refusing as I am contagious, I work with immune compromised individuals, I can't drive safely and I just feel all round shit.

Manager said she's going to have the manager above her contacting me as I shouldn't be refusing. Surely I'm doing right?

Sounds like you're not in any fit state to be at work. Sorry your manager is being so awful. Keep a record of any conversation you have with him / her

If you can't drive safely (and it certainly sounds as though you can't) and there's no other practical way of getting to your calls, then you should definitely stay off work.

If you had a few local calls that you could do on foot, it would be a different matter, but it doesn't sound as though that's the case.

If you can't see properly then you can't drive safely, can't administer medication safely, can't necessarily read other instructions or do fiddly care-related tasks such as fastening buttons. So regardless of any infection control measures or risk to your clients it doesn't sound as if you are fit to do your job. You can self-certify sickness absence for the first week.
