Simple things that I should have done years ago to make life easier

My lovely cat has been waking us up at 5/6am for 6 years.
Last night I had the genius idea of closing the lounge door so she couldn't come to our room.
Hence we slept longer. Why did I not think of this earlier? I love cat snuggles but love a lie in more.

Am I thick or does anyone have similar stories?

After years of searching for the right sized fitted sheet and matching pillowcase/ duvets from a huge jumble in my cupboard whenever I changed the sheets I saw a tip where you fold the fitted sheet, duvet and pillow cases and put it into one pillowcase when it’s been washed. Now I have a stack of pillowcases, all complete and ready to use, I can see which set it is and it’s all there. Life changing.

I fold the sheet & cover lengthwise and then half, lay sheet on top of cover, fold pillowcases into rectangles. Place pillowcases on top of sheet at one end and roll them up together. Saves digging them back out of the pillowcase when they are needed.

This is a little different but it's saved me a ton of time and much stress and heartache! When I've finished with a kitchen roll (or similar) I cover one end with paper and tape it down securely. Then when the cat brings in some terrified wee mouse I can point the open end of the tube towards the mouse from a distance (it's normally hiding behind something on the stairs) and it will almost always run in. I can then carry the mouse out to the garden and put down the tube in the bushes, collecting it the following day. I have a collection of them now, stored in strategic places around the house :)

Weird, I’ve used colour catchers for 5+ years (even with new red jumpers) and never had an issue with them 🤷‍♀️

I have used them too. Plus, I did not think the lime would be very transferable. It was though.

Buying a tumble dryer! I was so obsessed with not getting one for years due to the cost of running it (this was even before the energy price increase). I don't have a garden so was making myself completely miserable with multiple loads of wet washing hanging around that just wouldn't dry. This was even worse in the warmer weather as couldn't even finish it off on the radiators!
I finally caved and bought a heat pump tumble dryer and the cost to run it is a drop in the ocean compared to the general price increase and has made my life so much easier.

Put a dry bath towel in with your wet washing, it'll save you more. It dries much faster. I only tried this around 6 months ago after being told about it for the last 5 😆

Love this! Now going to clear out school stuff that I haven’t looked at in years, not sentimental either and I’ve learnt to live for the moment and today, not in the past.
Also agree… white crockery…, timeless!

Thing that helped me with this- take photos of items before dumping! Actually for old school reports, school work, letters (hey, I’m old, real written letters) having photos of them actually makes them more accesssble. I took photo of my kids toys and teddy’s before I dumped them- they got to keep 1 or 2 favourites for posterity (they’re late 20s and asked me to store their stuff still and I was downsizing 🤣🤣🤷🏼‍♀️)

I need to do that to my own 'art' (did art A-level, so some of it is huge and... not that good).

Photograph it

If you must iron sheets (and I do sometimes with the really high thread count ones), put them on the bed and then iron. Your bed becomes a massive ironing board.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 08/06/2023 21:11

Have 2 DSs the same size and not have to worry about sorting their clothes until they’re old enough to want their own stuff separately and therefore sort it themselves . one sock drawer , one pant drawer, one jumper draw, one Le kit drawer….just labelled with surname ….

Yep if you are very particular 😉Unlike me who just puts the sheets on the bed as is, and (I use top sheets under the duvet) only iron the bit that folds down over the duvet. My secret is out.

I am quite sentimental and love keeping things my children had made/school certificates etc. I had the genius idea a year or so ago of taking photos of these items, which allowed me to the bin the physical item! This meant that, whilst we still have the memories of the pieces of art/certificates etc, I was reducing our piles of ‘stuff’.
I am quite impressed with myself for thinking of that one 😁

But that was MY idea.. I was the genius
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Love this. I’m with you here

Inspired by this thread today I bought more knives, rather than dealing with the daily annoyance of only owning 5 normal knives.

keyboardkat · 08/06/2023 21:18

Teaspoons go missing because they are in the recycling bin with the yogurt pots. I know this, because I found lots of them in there when emptying it. I do wash the yog pots, but somehow the spoon goes with them in the bin, don't ask me how. Daydreaming, in a rush, daft mare? All three I suspect.

That might help some with the mystery of the missing teaspoons.

FixItBotchIt · 08/06/2023 21:22

It's like I wrote this! We have been doing this for a few months now as the cat likes to go crazy in my bedroom 'exploring' waking me up...I already have a 6 year old and a baby who does that!

Fourcandlesx · 08/06/2023 16:57

Mine was the realisation that you don't need physical stamps to post a letter and can just buy a stamp online and print it off. If you are sending somrthing tracked, the postie even comes and picks it up for nothing (well where I live they do)

Wait, what?

NeighbourhoodonWatch · 08/06/2023 21:26

I bought clingfilm and used it all the time, but hated how it clings and gets stuck to itself. so now I buy foil and my blood pressure is lower.

@Season0fTheWitch you need the Lakekland cling fim dispenser - life changing genius:)

Wow, turns out it can multitask with different rolls of tape. There’s posh, having more than one roll of sellotape on the go!

Glad to have helped make your tape dispenser even more fabulous!

Yes but the veg needs to be at the bottom of the fridge as it should the coldest

Sometimes too cold and it freezes then goes manky.

milkydress · 08/06/2023 21:29

@MayBeee that really is the best advice!

Please help me understand how this helps...can you not put the hanger directly on the line?

The hangers slip down the line and can fall off with a large gust of wind.

I've used these for years as I hated trying to iron out the peg marks from shirts etc. If the garment is not totally dry I can take straight from the line to the rail in my airing cupboard or hang in the shower.

I read in a magazine years ago to put your folded duvet cover inside the matching pillowcase. I do this with sheets as well

OrlaPeel · 08/06/2023 21:32

Re: wrapping - we now use "The System".

Have bought lots of cheerful paper gift bags and boxes from Tiger and similar. Every family birthday we put presents into these and close them with a mini peg.

Birthday person doesn't know what it might be from the shape of the parcel, zero wrapping paper and tape are used (and immediately thrown away), and putting presents into the bags takes about 5 minutes.

Have done the same for Christmas (bags always massively reduced in January sales and don't sell out quickly) and presents for 6 people are wrapped in under an hour.

All bags go back in the cupboard to be used next time. And it's nice to reuse and get to keep the pretty ones.

Try it, it will bring you much joy!

Wait, what?

We had that too but it has ended now. You have to pay now, as it was when first started.

The really good stuff is probably a shoe box full though we kept most of it and one day I'll throw out the Edwardian photos of peopoe we never knew! I do appreciate the lack of space many have now though.

My grandparents have amazing photos of their parents and grandparents; my in laws are the same. I just wish I had the space, I don’t know what we’ll do with it all when they’re gone!
