Simple things that I should have done years ago to make life easier

My lovely cat has been waking us up at 5/6am for 6 years.
Last night I had the genius idea of closing the lounge door so she couldn't come to our room.
Hence we slept longer. Why did I not think of this earlier? I love cat snuggles but love a lie in more.

Am I thick or does anyone have similar stories?

Took so long to do the new Christmas tree last year with very tangly snowflake lights so I unplugged it after Christmas and put a sheet over it and put it in the loft fully loaded for next Christmas - can then make a few minor adjustments if desired, but of course only works for an artificial one - also save all the assembly of the tree branches and straightening them out 😊

This is one helluva hack.

Much like when Meg on Motherland drunkenly wraps her kids’ gifts on Christmas Eve by simply placing a sheet of wrapping paper over all the gifts (on the sofa) combined.

So there’s another time-saving hack right there, ladies and gents.

Life's too short for ironing. I pop all my clothes in dryer for 7/8 mins enough to get them hot and steamy, take them out pull flat and hang them up either on washing line or clothes horse as flat as possible. Seriously only ever iron if really, really needed.

^^ I agree with above!

And for some items you can’t td, or when you are going to a very smart event, buy a clothes steamer like they use on fashion shoots. Irons things on the hanger.

I write my friend's children's names and birthdates in my address book. Makes remembering ages/Christmas cards easier!

After years of tie on tags which tear or fall off, I have started labelling my storage boxes (top of the wardrobe) with wide masking tape and felt pens. No more searching through a dozen identical boxes!

Keeping track of pill-taking: instead of the faff of pre-filling those little day-marked boxes, I discovered it was much easier to mark the days already taken on the pill package itself. Then you can see instantly whether you've taken, or not. Much easier to see than explain, so I hope my photo upload works.

Now that's brilliant 😁 @GameofPhones

Also, I keep a yoghurt pot with a lid by the hob and drain any fat or oil into it when I'm cooking. This is kept for about a week (depending on the weather) and then thrown in the general waste on bin day. Saves risking fats and oils going down the drain and potentially causing a blockage.
I don't have yogurt pots, so I just put several sheets of kitchen paper in the pan to soak the fat up; then put it in the bin.

We drain off into a tub and let it solidify. Once it's hard we pop it in the food recycling bin (empty the tub of course). As long as it's solid it can go in our food recycling bin. Our food recycling contents are burned to make energy.

We often keep tub in freezer.

I probably should do something more frugal with the fat, but don't.

Let me introduce you to my scrub daddy friend. I've just cleaned my mini cooper soft top roof today.

I use it for the stupid D bath previous owners installed, Ditto the wall tiles. I'm just over 5" and need longer arms it's absolutely brilliant. I've never used it in the kitchen. Tap to open picture. It's from Amazon

minipie · 14/06/2023 14:03

Magic Sponge.
Brilliant for removing marks off painted walls. And cleaning burnt on residue off pans eg Le Creuset type. Best thing - I scuffed the car really badly on a post the other day and nearly cried. Magic Sponge got 99% of it off!

minipie · 14/06/2023 14:04

Hot nights when kids can’t sleep - I give them a freezer block (the type from a cold bag) wrapped in a pillowcase. Really helps

I think some of you need to adjust your cognitive schema. Why do you think matching crockery is a requirement? Just have mis matched crockery? Or don't invite people round (my strategy) same with bedding.

I don't think it's a 'requirement'! We manage fine with chipped crockery and mismatched all sorts of things.

But perfectly matched or beautiful things bring me much more joy, day to day. There's no harm in that.

I sort of do this but I mark them all up in one go before taking them, so when my reminder goes off in the evening I can check at a glance whether I remembered to take the meds that morning. Works a treat, rarely ever miss a dose.

mumlikeaboss · 14/06/2023 21:32

Sorry I realise that sounds like I'm repeating what gameofphones said but what I mean is I only have to get the marker pen out once a fortnight to mark up each new sheet, then just look for the right letter each morning rather than marking it after taking!!

That saves time if you are taking pills from one packet. I take pills from three packets so the pill reminder (that's what the pre-marked boxes are called) is the better option for me.

The joys of polypharmacy.

This is a little different but it's saved me a ton of time and much stress and heartache! When I've finished with a kitchen roll (or similar) I cover one end with paper and tape it down securely. Then when the cat brings in some terrified wee mouse I can point the open end of the tube towards the mouse from a distance (it's normally hiding behind something on the stairs) and it will almost always run in. I can then carry the mouse out to the garden and put down the tube in the bushes, collecting it the following day. I have a collection of them now, stored in strategic places around the house :)

Ooh I'm going to try this one. I normally catch them in an ice cream tub.

It's better to use an old duvet cover over the tree, easier to encase it to keep dust off it.

I know someone who does this. Just sticks a double duvet cover over the thing and shoves it in the garage for 11 months. Surprisingly, no spiders!

I get mine delivered in dossette boxes.

My mum did the putting the Xmas tree away decorated in the 1980s, she was clearly ahead of the curve.

Cakeorchocolate · 16/06/2023 07:13

I've been putting my tree in the loft assembled with lights still on for 3 yrs. DH thought it would never work. He was wrong of corse. It wouldn't have been possible in our previous house though.

Definitely need to remember to use a duvet cover next time though. I just use bin liners at the mo.

Honestly, that's shocking. What a waste of money and water

Agree - it quite literally takes FIVE MINUTES to unload a dishwasher.

I generally just pick them up in my hands, but have to admit I've been bitten a few times.

Ooh. Sliders. Furniture Sliders from Amazon. We have really heavy sofas I could never hoover under. Put Furniture Sliders under and now I can easily move the sofas. ....Apparently some Sliders are made for pianos or wardrobes.

Disgusting about of ableism about this on this thread. Is it really so hard to conceive that some people do struggle to complete such simple tasks unaided?

Leafy3 · 20/06/2023 15:45

G5000 · 21/06/2023 07:05

At least in the original comment the poster said it's for people who don't have time and energy at that moment and didn't mention anything about disabled people. If someone posts that DH leaves dishes by the sink, do you also accuse them of ableism because DH might struggle to wash dishes independently? A bit of a stretch here, no?

JuliaLilian · 21/06/2023 08:27

Some people will look for discrimination where there is none. Says more about them I think.
