To not understand Mumsnet policy on thread deletion

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 03/06/2023 09:15

Why is it that a thread literally titled I hate Kids is allowed to run for days, yet a thread daring to question whether an elderly woman was rude is deleted quickly? Also there is currently a thread calling children vile names, such as Cretins and Crotch Droppings which has not been deleted. Will this be deleted as its in reference to other threads?

The bus thread OP posted more drips than a dripping tap.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 03/06/2023 09:36

I hope it was a troll because if it wasn't the OP seemed incredibly upset and she didn't deserve the abuse.

She was pretty abusive herself.

Well yes but because the members make the forum what it is, when they're piling on to tell a woman with a terminal brain tumor that she needs to toughen up, mocking her "wobbly wee badge", saying she's about to drop dead, she's wasting her precious time etc, it doesn't show Mumsnet to be a nice place.

I missed that, Wow!

Aye it got pretty awful. I'm not sure how far into it I was when it got zapped but I saw posts from about 1am this morning. No idea if it got worse or settled down

BeverlyHa · 03/06/2023 09:37

Mumsnet, a hell on earth network gathering vile women calling their own blood and flesh vile names. Yes, no wonder. I will be happy if they delete my whole profile for pointing the truth how they vile really are to use toxic threads as consumer ratings

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 03/06/2023 09:38

Agree with PPs that they want traffic, so sensational threads even if they're offensive or clearly untrue just stay up.

I had to laugh mirthlessly recently when someone asked for a 'safe space' on Mumsnet for childless and child free people. Also saw the same on the step-parenting board. There are no safe spaces! It's a total free for all (except if you troll hunt or someone calls someone a name outright). But that's part of Mumsnet's erm...charm?

allabouttheboy · 03/06/2023 09:38

It is about the volume of complaints. It's why racism is allowed to stand because not many people report it.

Paperlate · 03/06/2023 09:39

It was a post a controversial thread that time on a Friday night and sit back and watch the fireworks type of thread.

I actually ended up feeling sorry for the I hate kids poster as well as she had her arse handed to her. Rightly so but I'm not sure why it wasn't zapped earlier.

And classics is full of obviously made up posts.

I think it might be the level of complaints against something that gets it deleted. I have had complaints made about some of my posts which the pearl clutchers have taken offence to and I am now on my Scarborough warning.

Simply.because people have a different view to you doesn't mean they are pearl clutches. It means they have a different view to as to what is appropriate. You can disagree but it doesn't make them pearl clutches.

You come across better if you don't demean others because they have a different view to you.

LookItsMeAgain · 03/06/2023 09:41

The fact that we're guessing why a thread gets deleted just goes to show that there is NO easily followed process and procedure that anyone posting on MN is aware of so they will know if their post for their thread will be deleted.

Mumsnet might want the traffic but that doesn't make the thread ok to remain.

The flip flopping of reasons why a thread or post might get deleted is to my interpretation down to what you put in your message reporting it and who you might get in MN reading your message reporting it.

MN can you please put in place a clear concise policy on thread deletion and one on when individual posts in a thread might get deleted.

Thank you

TimesRwo · 03/06/2023 09:43

The bus thread became nasty. Once the OP revealed her disability was a brain tumour, some users were vile in what they wrote, then defending themselves as if it was just a disagreement in a discussion. To be fair there was a lot of drip feeding from OP too, and she was just as aggressive. But it was a really unpleasant thread.

SweetSakura · 03/06/2023 09:45

Agreed. There was a really interesting thread on remote working that got deleted because it was "becoming a bit of a bunfight" but it was nothing of the sort. Just people expressing different opinions respectfully. Really inconsistent.

Yet some vile goady threads that are obviously trolls stay up

Enko · 03/06/2023 09:45

Op overall I fins crude language has become far.more acceptable over the years. Where as before it would have been a rarity these days its more of a norm.

To me if you can't make the argument without putting others down then you don't have an argument.

At one point I saw an argument against the monarchy commented as "because you dropped out of someone's vagina" to me this is unnecessary. What is wrong with stating due to whom you were born too? I discount such arguments as I feel they rely on shock tactic and to me that's not a good tactic.

Paperlate · 03/06/2023 09:46

If MN had deleted all the ableist, ageist and PA on the swooping elderly woman bus thread there wouldn't have been much left of it standing.

MrsMikeDrop · 03/06/2023 09:47

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 03/06/2023 09:18

Yeah, I'll be honest I didn't read it all but it seemed fairly tame compared to some recent threads. It seems elderly people are a protected species when it come to criticism, but kids are fair game.

Nah I'd say the OP deleted that as everyone was basically telling her she was BU

You know you can delete your own profile if you find it so vile right? No one is forcing you to be a member.

BiscuitsBiscuitsEverywhere · 03/06/2023 09:50

The bus thread was deleted for breaking talk guidelines. So I assume the OP was a troll, possibly a PBP.

Softoprider · 03/06/2023 09:51

@Enko Plenty of really nasty threads directed at individuals are allowed to stay and run a course. Threads I would not join in out of decency calling people with no right of reply any number of horrible names allowed to stay causing offence.
It seems there is a massive double standard given the amount of traffic some threads generate and some not so.

PatientZorro · 03/06/2023 09:51

The bus thread was full of malicious idiots goading the poor woman, some piling on with even more glee when they found out her ailment and a couple of posters mocking her for her illness.
IMO it would have been better if those nasty fuckers taking pleasure in taunting her had their posts deleted, even better if they’d been banned.
I expect the OP asked for the deletion herself - don’t blame her.

Yes from what other posters say it sounded like it went downhill and MN were right to delete it, but I don't get why other awful threads are allowed to remain as they are deemed OK.

It was pretty obvious it was a troll. But as we are not allowed to say that on threads and no MNHQers around at that time of night it stayed up far to long.

There’s a huge difference between using language that people don’t like, to attacking someone.
